ARGdb

Alright so I know the typical idea "yeah those people are getting paid" or "thats those people's jobs". But just hear me out for a sec, because I get all that already.

I really think that some kind of ARG review system should be in place. not review for content, but review for quality. we have video game reviews, we have movie reviews, but we dont seem to have ARG reviews, other than the popularity of a thread. i mean i know ARGN gives the downlow on news on an ARG but it doesnt review args for a score.

personally i would <3 to see someone (or better yet, several people) reviewing ARGs with a # or letter system (A,B,C,D,F/99%,10%) that may also make it easier for new players to come around and pick up an ARG when they can see what kind of content, level of interaction, pack, and quality an ARG has without reading through a bunch of the thread first.

i understand this wouldnt be easy, because so many ARGs go up, however, all of us lurk, and at least lurking an ARG gives us an idea about the game. also i know this won't have a monetary reward for time and such, but it's just an idea i had, so i already know it will be a lot of hard work, a lot of time, little compensation, and hard to follow so many ARGs.

I think the review should show how long the ARGs been running, link to the thread, level of interaction, # of views everyday, #of posts everyday, as well as a quick summary so far that is inclusive enough that you can jump right in on the thread after reading the summary. this would of course need to have a sort of "start here" type message. like, if there is a main character on an AIM account write in the article "contact soandso on AIM, they are the current focus on this game"

also there will be the debate of when a game should be rated. I think that the games under review should be frequently reviewed for the content within them, and then, when the game implodes/ends a finalized review.

i just was wondering what other people thought of such a site. again, not how hard it would be to run, but if it would be effective, fun, good, etc.

I'm not sure how to add a game... or how to add myself as a PM... or anything. Site seems to be missing controls.

Btw, ARGdb is (if I recall) meant to parallel imdb, for ARGs. I don't know how their submission structure works, whether you have to submit yourself/your game or whether you have to be "famous" enough for someone to do it for you.

I dunno about the idea of using a rating system. It doesn't seem to fit as much for an immersive experience such as an ARG.

I'm not sure how well-received a quality rating would be, neither here in the forums nor in the general public. (Multiple reasons, not gonna go into it now.)

However, perhaps what potential players do wish they had is a "what's hot" dynamic chart, somehow giving a sense of which games people are currently playing, which ones they're having the most fun with, how large the player base is at the moment,... all at a glance, all kept reasonably up-to-date. Yeah, it's "blue sky brainstorming" as my boss would say, just dreaming up what might be wonderful to have, whether or not it could actually be implemented.

OK, two problems I can see:
1) the database, in order to judge popularity, etc, would have to have constant input from the players. I can't see every player constantly telling some website that they're still interested.
2) in lieu of the above, unique site hits could be used. The problem here is that if a game uses one site repeatedly and just updates it, the only data you have is how many players hit it total, not during any specific timeframe. Unless something like Google analytics can manage that? If it can, that would be your solution.
[EDIT]
Assuming you can keep track of how many unique hits occur within a certain time period (ie during each update), you could do a ratio of total/unique hits to guage how excited players are about a game.

ARGdb a very cool project, basically "the IMDB of ARGs" combined with the ability for some social networking for the players. It's actually the idea and project of Brooke Thompson, I'm just implimenting it in PHP. I'm quite excited and I've made a really large amount of progress on the site, having only been actively coding the project for about 7 days now. My current goal is to have most functionality completed by the end of the month, which would be just in time for ARGFest '07. I'll be excited to see this site up and running at full steam.

And on that note, I think I'll get back to work.

Sounds good, maybe when Brooke has a chance she can explain her vision..again...I forget what the plan was originally, though I'm sure I knew it at one time.
