[Meta] What's up with the Wiki and Temporary Wiki

As you may have noticed, the Wiki is slow-to-nonresponsive. No, this is not because of any specific thing (like Penny-Arcade linking.) My host has been pretty lenient and even moved it over to their colocation demo machine to help out and I set some optimizations in the MediaWiki config to help speed things up.

The good news is that bandwidth is not an issue. It is at 20 gigs (of 64), so there is plenty of headroom there. The bad news is that I think (20/20 hindsight) I picked the wrong Wiki software. MediaWiki is a pretty heavy PHP app. When they moved me to the colo demo machine, it was eating up 30% of the CPU on the box. (Keep in mind this was a SHARED hosting environment, so it slowed down dozens of other sites, too.) Now, it is eating up 70% of the demo machine's CPU (again, shared by a couple of people in similar situations because it is the demo box).

At present, I am investigating a few different options, including:

1) Getting a colo box for a few months until this blows over. (This will be a couple of days, as I am waiting for a very large Canadian check to clear.)

2) Migrating the software and database content to a different Wiki app (one that is much more lightweight.) Does anyone have any experience/suggestions with this? I would like to use Moin-Moin, but Dreamhost has a dated Python runtime and cannot support this.

3) Seeing if someone (preferably an ARGN affiliate) wants to take over the code and database. Keep in mind, this is a CPU hog. Stats: last month's pages, this month's pages, recent CPU usage

4) Temporarily throwing this onto an extra box on the DSL (only 768kb uplink, unfortunately, but a static IP and business-class service, so capable of running servers) until things calm down.

I am sort of leaning toward the last option, but am a bit hesitant to have the internet beating at my door again. That is sort of why I moved from hosting things myself to a dedicated hosting company a few years back.

Anyway... does anyone have any strong opinions or suggestions on any of this?

edit to change to Announcement. -fb

I'd say get something back up very very soon, as in a day, or two tops... but look for a better host. I'd definitely be interested in knowing some stats (like the bandwidth/cpu usage to the speed/server hardware) to see if my work/ISP can host it. I'd have to see what I can push from my work, as I have a free hosting plan for 3 sites I maintain, but none are nearly as traffic heavy as the wiki... even so, if it's feasible, I may be able to piggyback it off my own site if our servers are up for the challenge... at least until an official final destination hosting company can be found.

What about porting some of the main info pages (Monologues, embedded texts, GPS coordinates) to HTML? No commentary off those page, but it would save people doing just some research from calling the wiki and would serve as a backup if it goes belly up.

Or would that just be bad redudancy?

Here's a tip (obvious, but still)

Here's the google link to search the wiki directly. You can also view cached versions of earlier pages. Faster than going through the wiki for a search first.

EDIT - ginormous URL - SG

Temporary Wiki for Coordinating the Coordinates Puzzle

Since we're having some technical issues with the Netninja wiki Sad , and considering that we have new updates with the coordinates which we could use a wiki for, SpaceBass has kindly set up a temporary wiki for this purpose, here. Please, no goatse, no uglifying. Just good clean coordinate coordination (and a little more alliteration).

If there are questions/problems, post 'em here please!

I'm seeing the following warning message when I try to sign in (which doesn't appear to work for me).
Quote:
lib/WikiUserNew.php:2009: Warning[512]: Unable to connect to IMAP server localhost:143/imap/notls

I don't seem to be able to edit anything but that's probably due to the above problem.

Anyway, what I was going to add was the link to the pre-17th version of Wishi-san's table:

http://forums.unfiction.com/forums/files/theloc.txt

for comparison purposes. *shrug*

You should be able to sign in without authenticating by using any username in the form of a Wiki link, such as "SpaceWuss" or "TestUser." If you don't have at least two caps in there like that, you'll get that error page.

Admittedly, I rushed the setup on this and I'm sure not everything (read: nothing) is perfect.

I still see that error message, but I think the actual problem was that the Wiki version you are using only seems to work in IE (I was using Mozilla). I was able to add the link to the older version of Wishi-san's work, so all's well that ends well. Smile

I'm actually using it in Firefox and I haven't had that problem. I *did* however, disable the IMAP server for that domain, since I hadn't expected to use it. There must be some way to turn that off in the Wiki config too, but I've got little time ATM.

I have a server here in my place. What we could do is host the front-end on my server and just have the database data going over the pipeline to your colo, or at least, I could be a mirrored front-end to your site.

Or, I could mirror the *entire* site including database at various intervals (like, get a new copy at midnight).

The only hope you have of keeping it somewhat stable is to mirror it off.

I'll be the first to offer my hand in keeping the wiki up.

If you're interested, gimme a buzz at tdondichSPLATmajiknetworks.com and we'll figure it out together.

Here are my suggestions

Here are some suggestions, ranging from quick hits, to things that might more time.
Offload Static Content to Another Host - This includes all of the css, javascript, gif, jpg, and png files. According to your server report well over *half* of the data sent out by the server (and over 85% of the file requests) is static content. I know that you say bandwidth is not the issue, but even static content takes up cpu time of a server. My hunch is that this will help you out more than you think.

Seperate the Database and Web Server - This is probably a non-issue as your host probably does this already, and you may not have any say in the matter anyway. Still, if you do know that the webserver and database are on the same box, you would do well to seperate them and share the cpu load.

Tweak page cache settings?. - The latest version of MediaWiki uses a caching system. I'm pretty ignorant about mediawiki (or any wiki for that matter), so I don't know how easy it is to configure the page caching settings.

Don't switch wiki's - This might start a flame war among wiki zealots, but I haven't seen *one* wiki hold up very well to a slashdotting. My guess any other wiki will be just as slow. Loading your data onto another type of wiki could be a nightmare, and then when your done may not even reduce your cpu time -- all of them are written in one high level language or another (perl, python, php, and so on) and are (again, don't want to start a fight), comparable in terms of performance. I'm a wiki dummy, so I could be wrong.... but I don't think so.
All in all, I think the easiest, biggest bang-for-the-buck thing you can do is to offload all of the javascript, css, and images off to another host. Just my two cents. Hope this helps.

thanks

Thank you spacebass for setting this up, to wishi and xnbomb for the maps. And everyone else who I may have inadvertently overlooked. It's all very helpful...now if we just knew for sure what we were supposed to do. Laughing
