CNN updates

Has anyone been getting unsolicited CNN e-mails?
I thought that it was a Phishing sceem and deleted mine. However, the last one I got was dated October 2008.

Edit: definitely a Phishing scam-- False alarm-- sorry.

I joined recently and as a result I'm very confused. I know of 'World Without Oil' but I don't know anything about the gameplay involved.

What's this thing about the dinner? How should I approach the game? what do I have to do to take part? Could someone please explain this all to me as if you were addressing a small and rather dislikable child.
Thanx

hi, subrosante. you might check out the teaser page that went live recently: http://www.superstructgame.org/. you may have already seen the faq and scenario synopsis from the iftf website that are linked there, but that and jane's blog are what we have to go on for now. i'm on an advisory board for the game and will try to check back in as all of us know more. cheers!

Thanks Sockiboo, I'm pretty sure I understand it now.

Tell me if I'm close.

In superstruct you fabricate online documentation of your future life. You can choose a future influenced by five superthreats as a backdrop and imagine the way your personal future has been changed in the wake of said ordeals.

What have I left out? And is it just me who can't get onto the iftf website right now?

For some unknown but devastatingly annoyng reason the Superstruct website is not working on my computer. I was really enthusiastic about this whole thing aswell.

Can someone please post the email address for sending in the dinner thing, and also is there a way I can sign up for the email updates if I can't get onto the iftf site.

One last important this, is there going to be a seperate website set up for the game of is it all on the iftf thing, becuase if it is, i'm going to have to do some unreasonable commuting to be apart of it.

Thanx

Looked over WWO, since I missed it. Looked fun. I guess I'll get in on this one, I've just sent in my email.

I read the scenario, but just for fun I'd like to spitball a bit.

What is it that we're going to have to do? Are we going to activley search for a "cure" to these problems? Are we going to be presented with scenario's in which our "future selves" are in deep trouble and have to solve our way out? Or is it going to be some combo of the two? Just figured I'd throw that out there, since my e-mail is currently LARPing as ARPAnet. Geeky little bugger.

This sounds pretty interesting. Does anybody know if we are supposed to be basing the future on exisiting research or is it purely fiction? I think if you look at what research labs and the military are producing now, it gives an indication of what we could see in 10 years time.

If it is based on current research, then I thought people might might be interested in a few of these links:

British Telecom's futurology department (interactive timeline):
Quote:
In the future we could be holidaying in space while robots tend our gardens back home - according to BT's latest technology timeline.
BT's futurology department has gazed into the future to predict the technological advances that will impact our lives.

Development, Doctrine and Concepts Centre (DCDC): "Global Strategic Trends"

Development, Doctrine and Concepts Centre are part of the Ministry of Defence (also available hereSmile

Quote:
In our analysis, we have tried to steer a measured course between the rocks of simplistic extrapolation from contemporary, emerging features and floating vague, meaningless generalizations and banalities about the future. Many commentators anchor themselves in the familiar present and, exploiting the latest fashion and a series of telling anecdotes, merely tell people what is already happening. Quite honestly, much of what we have to say, with regard to both continuities and discontinuities, does not have a conclusion or an ending, happy or otherwise, because, self-evidently, the future has not happened yet. What we offer are robust judgements across various alternative futures, which concentrate on the challenges of the most likely future themes.

Open source intelligence with lots of reference material that might be useful. Haven't read it in a while, but it used to have research papers about how MMO games could be used to predict how people will react in certain situations.

Raymond Kurzweil is an inventor and futurist. He has been a pioneer in the fields of optical character recognition (OCR), text-to-speech synthesis, speech recognition technology, and electronic keyboard instruments. He is the author of several books on health, artificial intelligence, transhumanism, the technological singularity, and futurism.

Here are a couple of his books:

Age of Spiritual Machines

The Singularity Is Near: When Humans Transcend Biology

A TED talk he gave

Futurecasting Digital Media – Bob Cotton

Read this at university and thought it was an interesting read at the time. Not worth the crazy prices I've seen quoted for it (£50+ on amazon.co.uk), but might be useful if you can find it in a library.

Hope the links are useful to someone, going to try to write a scenario for this weekend. I never played WWO, but this sounds like it could be fun.

I find it funny that you wrote this since I based my entire story on Kurzweil's "Age of Spiritual Machines." I learned of it from the Our Lady Peace album and I remember that his first prediction was for 2019, the year that Jane wants us to write our story on...

I've attached my story.

In other words, tweez, I think you may have something...

Mine's the one about Orangutans. Took a while for it to go up, but I imagine Jane's having quite a few pour in so she's staggering the updates a little? I dunno. Pure speculation.
