[SPEC] Black Swan

I think the Black Swan is a vital point, and we need to figure out something about it/him/she.

There's an article out there, which i think makes a lot of sense in the context.
Quote:
Are we in control of history or do we simply lurch from one random cataclysmic event to the next? Oliver Burkeman examines the black swan theory of chance.

I also found a book named Black Swan, written by Nassim Nicholas Taleb, who has a quite interesting domain name for his website: http://www.fooledbyrandomness.com/.

--EDITS--
Here's another interesting thing, from Nassim's book:

Quote:
Before the discovery of Australia, it was generally assumed that swans were always white. Suddenly, black swans turned up, unsettling people's expectations. In his new book, The Black Swan, Nassim Nicholas Taleb asks why this discovery seemed so surprising. And in response he argues that it is because we are hard-wired to find order in randomness, to turn scattered points into a coherent narrative, and to expect identified patterns to last forever.

And, a connection between swans and Greek mythology:

This one deserves a new post:

Swans are revered in many religions and cultures, especially Hinduism. The Sanskrit word for swan is hamsa or hansa, and it is the vehicle of many deities like the goddess Saraswati

So, could this be Rachel Hanso, come back from TLE1?

So, that might explain The Swan station (a.k.a. "the hatch").

I personally like the Black Swan theory. It "refers to a large-impact, hard-to-predict, and rare event beyond the realm of normal expectations." Reminds you of the plot of LOST, huh?

Another thing, is anyone here an expert on Greek myth? Was there any stories involving black swans? We've had alot of references to Greek myth in the group names, so it's possible.....

The Black Swan Project is the project name given by Odyssey Marine Exploration for its discovery and recovery of an estimated 500 million USD (253 million GBP) worth of silver and gold coins, from a shipwreck, believed to be the Merchant Royal, which sank about 40 miles (64 km) off the coast of Cornwall, UK in 1641

(found on Wikipedia)

Somehow it reminds me of the Black Rock. At least is a nice connection, or a trippy one.

Thats pretty good, as what he/she/it has been doing has been hard to predict and it seems like he/she/it has made a large impact on Dharma (thats what it seems from the video)

Not only does it sound like the plot of LOST, it sounds like the perfect description of the first season: remember when they came upon the hatch/Swan station? That was the single most improbable event - even more than the Polar Bear - of the season. Crazy to think about...

Well, theres more then that! Each of the main characters of LOST had no reason to be on Flight 815 due to their own situations. Also, planes blowing up in midair is pretty rare...but then for that plane to land on that Island and for everyone to survive, including Jack who wasn't even in the water when he awoke? That's a Black Swan event if i've ever heard one.

And yeah, then there's things on the Island, like the Polar Bears, the Stations, the Others, ect.

Very Happy haha, yeah. Is it Cerberus, the security system (Danielle Rousseau) or "the soul of the Island" (Locke)?

I don't remember that other website...Planet UFO, something UFO...anyway, some guy said there that the Black Swan could be the Black Smoke. I don't know...maybe the Black Swan we're seeing now could be the impersonation of the Black Smoke, the way the Smoke found of "speaking" to someone, instead of only "killing". By the way, who said it kills people? Personally, i think it just throws people to another point in time & space, without killing people. Who knows what that smoke is? I don't think it belongs to the Dharma Initiative, or it would be tamed by the Initiative. It can be a "rebel experiment" too, and now it is getting in the way again, for some unrecognized reason.
I sent an email to Van Eeghen, asking about the Black Swan, but i got no answer so far. I think he knows at least who/what it is. I'm really really curious about it, and i even think the interferences could come from another point in time, not necessarely 2008.

You know, there are a lot of things about this show I can sort of predict or speculate on.....but the smoke, man, I just can't wrap my brain around how they are gonna plausibly explain that.
