Trailer?
and a couple of other opinion questions

What is the general opinion on trailers for your games? My plan is a longish (10-15 min) video to serve as a trailer for the game before the proper trailhead is released. Is it a bad idea?

I've seen that other games have had teasers that lead up to the game and help to get a few people interested in the upcoming game, and I wonder if something of this nature would be useful. I figure at least that it would give potential players an idea of the production and mood that is involved.

Also, if a game has a potential for different endings, would a post game release of the unused endings totally mess the feel of the ending up? The game has a 50/50 chance of having a pretty unhappy ending, and we're planning on filming all of the endings anyway.

Finally, if I allowed players to get different endings, would that ruin the immersive experiance for anyone? If it came down to a choice, and one choice would result in one ending and the other in another ending, would giving the players the power to choose which one they wanted individually be effective?

Thanks for any help.

IMO:

I see nothing wrong with a trailer. It could really drum up interest.

I thought about scanning all of my notes and releasing them as post game fodder considering that I have notebooks upon notebooks. I think it would be fun to see the potential ending that could have happened. I can only see this as being a bad idea if you plan to do a sequel in the future. Other than that the game is over and you've stepped from behind the curtain so anything is fair game.

As far as different endings go I don't like the idea mainly for the reason you stated. I feel it dampens the immersive ending. It is also dependent on how different the two endings are. If your main character dies in one ending and doesn't in the other, than yeah, I would not like that. Afterward when people go to discuss it it would cause confusion and arguements about the fate of your character.

A trailer is a great idea, but 10-15 minutes might be a tad long. Generally, internet video is hyperactive: unless the video is especially interesting, varied, or is split into several separate parts, try to keep it around five minutes. (IMHO.)

What you might want from a trailer for an ARG.

(strange, youtube tag didn't work)

I agree with keeping it short. 2-3 max. Or do a prologue which is what I've been doing.

I hadn't really thought about that, but you're probably right. I'll have to think about how I want to present it to figure out if it needs to be shorter or broken into parts.

Thank you for the suggestion.

I guess my thing about the different endings is that they will all be videos that I'm planning on filming somewhat in advance in an effort to keep the release in "real time" with the actions of the players. It seems a shame to waste the film that wasn't used.

Maybe releasing it as an OOG easter egg would be an idea?

So we all agree that trailers are okay in everyones opinion what is the best place to release a trailer and how can we be sure that it reaches our target audiences. If it is tags on youtube would it be suitable to put "ARG trailer" in the tags?

I like trailers for ARGs and I believe that we will see more and more of them as a way to gain interest in a game as time goes on. I've said this before, so I thought that I would say it again.

I view trailers like I do initial posts on Unforums by PMs in that you can use the trailer to tell everyone that it's a game as long as you never do it again from that point on (say that it's a game, I mean).

As far as TAGs on Youtube are concerned, since you are telling everyone that it's a game, using words like "game, ARG, trailer, etc." sounds okay. At least this way, if you aren't going to tell people that it is a game within the video itself, the tags will do that for you.

What if instead of doing like, a literal trailer, you did like, the relative. For example, a trailer for a movie is like a short succession of clips from it that showcase the style and idea of what exactly the movie's gonna deliver, so what if you did like, a mini-game that sort of ties in, and maybe lets players know when the game starts, in a sort of IG way. That way, TINAG is still upheld! Yay!
