[UPDATE] The Fountain The SLA newspaper By sending a PM to Prof_Van I was accepted onto the newspaper staff. You can also join by expressing your interest in the "Are You Interested in Online Media" thread. The site admin then adds Newspaper Staff to My Organizations and you have access to new threads.
We got our first assignment on 9-14-08.

I received a message last night from Matt Dunn asking about SEAL and I really couldn't tell him much about that organization. It got me thinking that while I wasn't planning on assigning any newspaper assignments to you all until after classes actually began, we could go ahead and start on one now.
So I need a collaborative article from the team discussing the following points:
1. What is SEAL?
2. Why is Dr. DeGrance supporting SEAL
3. What are the thoughts of other new students about this organizations
4. How can the organization operate without drawing the ire of the DC
I suggest interviewing at least one of the other students in SEAL, Dr. DeGrance, other students who are just now registering for classes, and maybe even your parents to see what they think about the organization.
We'll try to make a deadline for this article's completion for this coming Friday. If we don't make the deadline the first time around, that's ok.
That got me PMing like crazy to IG characters. I got one very poignant response from the headmistress herself Dr. Guenivere DeGrance. Posting it here for those not involved just yet.

John,
I see Wes has put you to work rather quick and I'm really glad you came to me.
In today's society we ofter see humans standing up for the causes they believe in while our lifestyles dictate to us that we can only stand pat with the cards we have been dealt. I've been around a long time and I've seen the bad in the human heart and I've seen the good. Many of the Awlyn haven't taken the opportunity to see the potential for acceptance with human society as a whole.
There were days when the activities of a few demons brought down a fury of smite upon the small town of Salem. There have been days when an Angel would reach out and cure a sick child and the mother of the child would cry to the Angel thanking them for what they've done. Humans aren't a bad race at all and we can see today that they're more able to accept the differences amongst their own kind.
Today we have an African American human running for the President of the United States of America and his opponent has a female on the republican ticket. This is a first for their society and a step toward acceptance. They even celebrate homosexuality in some cities and while it is not commonplace for humans to accept it - the roots have been sewn.
So today we have our children, you children, working toward reminding our kind of how we too can learn acceptance. How we can learn to accept that though humans have always feared us and tried to destroy us, they are a society that is changing everyday.
I fully support the Dragon Council and the policies, but just as Jan Weepman - I often wonder what life would be like if there was no need to hide behind a mask. That is what motivates me to support SEALs with all of my heart.
I suggest the common every day approach to life when discussing the equality amongst all life. Spread the word, even spread it to humans if you like. I just recommend that we do not identify ourselves at any moment as a species of the Awlyn. That is why I suggested the name Students for Equality Amongst all Life over the initial name of Students for Awlyn Equality. This allows us to reach out to every Awlyn through an open medium such as blogs and videos without disrupting the Dragon Council's established guidelines for living amongst the humans.
If you need anything else feel free to ask.
I expect that this will show up in a newspaper article. We haven't yet heard weather it will be an online newspaper or printed. I'll use this thread when we get more updates.

Cool. Nice to see we're being put to work quickly. I asked Wes for a bit more information on the paper and yearbook first, and after getting a reply, I'm just waiting to see if I get in.

I sent Wes a pm asking to be on both newspaper and yearbook. So far, nothing.
I know when I'm not wanted.

Next assignment is to design a header for the newspaper. Do we have anyone else here with some graphic design skills? I have several thousand fonts if anyone needs one.

I put this together. I'm not sure if it will be big enough for the newsletter but I basically just copied the style of the school logo.
ETA: I liked the idea of putting in a fountain.
ETA2: Also one without the coat of arms.
ETA3: And finally I made some additional changes. I'm leaning towards this last one to submit as final.

Dude, that's perfect! The only thing I could see maybe adding if you went more balanced would be some sort of old style city center fountain graphic on one side and the school logo on the other. It's totally fine the way it is though, no need to change it, I just would have added one if I had the time to get creative.
Awesome work.

Full Interview: Professor Marikov I posted this on the school boards too, but figured I'd put it here for non-newspaper people. Some more insight into the different species can be found in quote 4.

Hello Professor Marikov,
My name is Nate, I'm a distance learning student, and a member of the newspaper staff. We have been hearing a lot about this new group called SEAL that exists on campus and is now extended online. I was wondering if you could give me your impressions of the group.
What do you think that they hope to accomplish?
What do you think that they actually can accomplish?
How do you feel about what they are doing?
What is your general impression of how well they are accepted around campus?
Thank you for your time, I look forward to Monday and starting History class!
-Nate

I don't care for it at all. I've survived longer by following the council's guidelines than any of you kids who think this is such a good idea.
History tells us that the humans fear the Awlyn more than we could ever expect. So many wars and so much strife that has been wrought upon us all by cowards trying to exterminate the Awlyn. You will learn more this year in the History class. I don't trust the humans one ounce. Don't fool yourselves into believing the humans have changed at all.

Thank you for the reply, Professor!
Just to play Devil's Advocate, I do have a couple of follow-up questions:
Is it possible that we could, by reaching out to humans in fellowship, improve both societies?
We have managed to change and adapt as a whole over the years, why can't the humans?
Again, thank you for your time. This is turning out rather interesting!

I'll answer both of your questions with a singular response: NO!
Have you not watched the human horror movies as of late? Werewolves in London, Paris, and other places slaughtering humans. Vampire movies and television shows portraying them as monsters who suck the life out of humans. Yes vampires must drink the blood of a warm blooded animal, but I don't know of any vampire during my existence to have drank the blood of a human. Humans have too much bacteria and viruses in their blood for the vampryrus body to handle. Vampires don't have the immune system to handle drinking blood from humans, but humans fear them because they do drink blood and have embedded this fear in their children for centuries.
Angels and Demons operate more openly in society often as stage actors in magic shows or hospitals and psychological institutions. Angels are seen as a blessing force while Demons are seen as the s pawn of the devil come to destroy the world.
The majority of humans believe that the djinn are genies trapped in a bottle and while this is closer to true for the chanuques, it's nowhere near true for the djinn.
Look at what the Humans did to the Dragons. There were once thousands of them throughout the world and now there are 6 that we know of. How can anybody destroy such a magnificent creature and make them hide for thousands of years in human form.
Human's cannot change, they don't want to change. They cannot accept others for who they are only what they are.

Thank you so much for your candor. I have a feeling that the discussion is far from over, but you have provided a firm "con" column for the debate. May I have your permission to reprint your comments in the school newspaper? They should prove to be very helpful in the story that we are working on.
Thanks again!
-Nate
Just waiting on a final wrap-up reply, which I don't expect to contain much info, but if it does, I'll post it.

The plot thickens. We got our first communication from Novak today. He posted in The Fountain section (newspaper) in response to my question about posting attachments as admin. Wes then calls him by name and pretty much calls him a smartass for calling him Van. He is in fact the site admin.

Huge post after mine so I'll add a new one. Your final fountain logo is sweet. That horizon line ties it all in. Great job with all of those.
Very interesting insight on the different species/races/whatever. Looks like Jain and I have to conquer the world or something.
[EDIT] I noticed Novak posted some random picture, have any of you Windows guys run it through anything on the off chance it's stegged? Novak has almost got to know some of us aren't kids...
