WhereCamp PDX 2008
announcement of unconference on geo-locative technology in Portland Oregon

On October 17-18-19, in Portland Oregon, Legion of Tech is presenting an unconference on the the topics of geo-location technology and its application. WhereCampPDX will explore how place, people, and technology engage each other. We're calling for a gathering of geo-hackers, database engineers, artists, programmers, and enthused users.

Topics of interest to WhereCamp include: remote sensing, geoinformatics, forestry and agriculture, food chain transparency, civil engineering, urban planning, local search, context awareness, place hacking, social cartography, citizen journalism, locative gaming. Admission is free and the agenda is set by the participants, during the conference.

The evening of Friday 17 October kicks-off WhereCamp with an art show sponsored by Software Association of Oregon at Olympic Mills.

Saturday 18 October is a day of presentations and discussions at SOUK, scheduled unconference-style. Saturday night might include a hardware hacking session.

Sunday we will continue with sessions at SOUK, but also put up a slate of games that utilize some sort of geo-location or general running around. Because the way people play with new technology is often one step beyond what that technology was designed for, and that play yields suggestions of what can be done next. Right now, we know that we are planning to run Cruel 2 B Kind, a live-action squad-based combat game, in the North Park Blocks. We'll arrange excursions to local geocaches and lead a walking tour of not-here.
