Pieces Of Nine - Toronto "I Spy" Treasure Hunt

I took part in this yesterday, (www.piecesofnine.com for more info).

It was sort of fun, definitely for the puzzle fan. If you like codebreaking and puzzlesolving then I would say you would have fun. Entry fee per team was $30, and you could have 1-3 people on your team.

Basically, the teams arrived at a pre-arranged statue in a park in TOronto and we were each given an envelope of clues, and a CD-r. When the host gave the signal, we were allowed to begin. We each tore open the envelopes and found inside 4 pieces of paper. One was an introduction letter, telling us the story of how a spy agency captured an enemy agent and recovered the enclosed clues from him. Our mission was to solve the clues, which revealed the identity of another enemy agent, as well as the agent's location, a "mission abort" item that we had to give to the agent, and a secret code phrase we had to say to the agent. The goal was supposed to be that we figure out all this stuff and when we successfully completed the mission, then it would tell the enemy agent that they were supposed to abort their evil plan, thus saving humanity.

So the backstory was interesting enough, although the names were a little silly. (S.P.I.E.S. was the good guy agency, V.I.L.L.A.I.N.Y. was the bad guys. And Agent X and Agent Y were the two evil agents. )

That's pretty much where the story part ended, and we were left with the other three pieces of paper which were puzzles. it took my team 4:26 to solve everything, and my team came in second last, we got stumped a few times. The winning team finished in almost half that time. The puzzles definitely weren't easy. They were actually quite clever, in that they were difficult to figure out, but once you did, it felt like the answer was staring you in the face the whole time. Someone who was a little more "puzzly" than me may have tore through the game really quickly. Once we solved the puzzles, we went to the location described, and saw the host again sitting in the park by a tree. we went up to her, said the phrase, handed her the item, and that was the end.

It was nice, Sarah (the host) had bought scratch tickets for each team who completed the game, (we won four bucks!) and the team who finished first won $100 gift card to HMV. (local record/DVD shop).

All in all, not a bad way to spend a saturday afternoon. Sounds like there's another hunt that might be a little bit different happening in January. Check out her website for more details.
