[SPEC] GPS *Addresses* Important -- Please Post

This thread is for posting the address and the organization name corresponding to each of the GPS points. I think the organization and building names may contain some meaning. I think others believe this too.

Please do not use an automatic GPS-to-address mapper! They can give addresses that don't exist. In order to qualify as the address at a GPS coordinate, it must meet two criteria:

When you post, if you have the name of the organization or building at that address, please post that too. And if you found that on Google, please post the link.

EDIT - moved to Puzzles; Changed topic - SG

One other tip for searching addresses with Google. If you type something like "1400..1410 Peachtree Street", You will get any numbers in the range between 1400 and 1410. This could be useful if you can't quite narrow down the exact address.

Two quick comments:

1) "Resolving to within 0.0002"... you should be aware that most consumer-level GPS devices aren't anywhere near this precise. Typical devices typically drift +/- 0.001 or more.

2) At least some addresses have no such coords. One in Cleveland is apparently in a downtown parking lot with no single nearby building. It's across the street from the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame, but a few other buildings are also close (but not more specifically identified.)

Thanks to super-helpful Gupfee, I can report these addresses for the Barnstable/Hyannis, MA locations:

07:27 PDT -070.289091, 41.652214:
Burger King, 184 North Street, Hyannis, MA

06:51 PDT -070.291601, 41.667164:
McDonalds, 654 Iyannough Road, Hyannis, MA

Whatever happens on Tuesday, I'll be getting fat.

(Gupfee, if you're reading this, thanks again! I've double-checked the numbers and I agree, these are the locations.)

Arizona locations.

OK, here are the address specifics for the Arizona locations....

-111.986529 / 33.511875 (Time: 16:23)
Cork'N Cleaver restaurant (street entrance)
5101 N. 44th Street
Phoenix, AZ 85018

-112.014587 / 33.495068 (Time: 11:05)
Parking lot of Basha's Grocery (and other stores)
Closest store to GPS coord
Jo-Ann Stores
3115 E. Indian School Road
Phoenix, AZ 85016

-114.232389 / 35.132215 (Time: 11:35)
There APPEARS to be a descrepancy here, but really there isn't.
Terrafly satellite pictures put this at 3322 Needles Trails, Golden Valley, which is a dirt trail out in the desert just SW of Kingman. Or, at least it WAS at the time the pic was taken.
MapQuest and other mapping sites put it at Stockton Hill Road. A little research shows that Needles Trails was renamed to Stockton Hill Road in that area.
So, I believe the address would be about
3300 Stockton Hill Road
Golden Valley, AZ 86413

However, I think this is a residential area, so it's still an odd location.

Which is why I suggest you do it online. Surveys are much more accurate.

In these cases, if the parking lot is intended for a particular building, I think we should just use that building's address. Otherwise, get an approximate address and note it's a parking lot.

Ann Arbor location:

07:59 PDT
Long -83.748764
Lat 42.279270

This location may be harder than many, simply because of the number of buildings, all in a row, that exist in the general vicinity. Using an online survey and guesstimating by building shape/color (vs a B&W aerial photo), my best position is:

The Ark
316 S. Main St.
Ann Arbor, MI, 4810(3/4)?

This is on the west side of Main St, 200 ft or so (estimated) south of Liberty St. The Ark is a half nightclub/half auditorium upscale sort of musical place. I've never been there, though the concert they have for the 24th is, apparently, free. It's also about nine hours too late.

Interestingly, the Ark's website lists their ZIP code as 48103; Mapquest/Yahoo Maps lists it as 48104. Go figure.

Also along the block are, from north to south: a Starbucks, a Subway, Seyfried Jewelers, a clothing boutique of some sort, Zydeco restaurant, and Conor O'Neill's Irish pub.

Thanks. I can't wait to get more info.

An interesting thing: there are at least three nightclubs in the list with colorful names:
41.511567 -81.607317 06:11 The Barking Spider (nightclub) 11310 Juniper Rd Cleveland OH http://www.barkingspidertavern.com/index.asp
35.247483 -80.805150 06:23 The Evening Muse (nightclub) 3227 N. Davidson St Charlotte NC http://www.queencitymusic.com/theeveningmuse/default.htm
42.279270 -83.748764 07:59 The Ark (Nightclub) 316 S. Main St. Ann Arbor Michigan http://www.theark.org/

The Barking Spider makes sense when you think about the plot. The Evening Muse does too; it's part of the Queen City promotional group in Charlotte.

But I don't get The Ark.

Please keep it exact! I think the only really trustworthy mappers are the sites that take GPS coordinates and map them, like maporama.com and mapquest.com. GPS units are not that accurate, especially in cities with big buildings. I think the best course of action is to map the GPS coordinates and then see if you can come up with an address or two that matches.

Location: sitting on a hot axon

Austin TX

I have the location for one of the Texas axons.

The Texas axons would be a great band name.

Anyway, it's on 8148 Whale St., Near the Clearlane intersection. It's rows of residential houses with nothing in the ordinary... Anyway, it MIGHT be 8149-8422 but I'm settling on 8148.

yes, but there are actually two Stockton Hill Roads.

Actually there are quite a number of road "fragments" called Stockton Hills. Roads in Arizona tend to be named by lateral, North/South or East/West. If it's along (roughly) the same lateral line, it gets the same name. Makes finding things without a good map near impossible.

Quote:
The one in our location list is still desert, here

There's no reason to think anyone has actually built anything on that land. Real estate types will happily sell you a lot in the area, but they say the roads are unpaved and there's no electricity.

Right, it's a new development, in unincorporated land. Actually MOST of the residential areas of Kingman and the surrounding areas are in unincorporated land. It's one of the big political issues in the area. I know, cause my in-laws live there.

Anyway, the fact that not much property has been sold in the area explains why it's hard to get an address hit with MapQuest within those areas.

Quote:
But if you stick 3300 Stockton Hill Road 86413 into mapquest, you get the other road, the one that really exists, about 15 miles away inside the town of Kingman 86401, here

Actually that's North Stockton Hills Road, and, as you noted, it's listed as being part of Kingman (in fact, is one THE major North/South artery on the West side of town) proper, while the desert one is considered part of Golden Valley.

While I agree that a North Stockton Hills address would make ALOT more sense with all the businesses there, that's NOT where the coordinate we've been given points to...... YET! Smile

Let's see if it gets changed.
