It's actually html in the email but I removed it for the quote as it's just <br>s etc.

Vigenere? Trying to guess keywords, a quick vigsolver came up with nothing useful but perhaps a dictionary attack would.

Well, I've been trying with Vigenere also but no joy.

Also Interesting to note that this is in a 9x9 Grid, Maybe there are grid chords somewhere that can pull the message out?

[PUZZLE] Email from jc, 8/19/04

EDIT: Woah! Not only did I miss this thread, I created another thread of the same exact name, and it stuck mine on the end of yours. Whoops!

Actually, that was me, I "merged" the topics this morning to put their stuff (which was put into the interaction forum as EMAIL) with yours (you created the proper thread in PUZZLES).

I like the idea of looking at this from a 9x9 perspective. Maybe reading the letters downward instead of across? I have to go to work so I cannot work on this one now. Have there been 9x9 puzzles solved in other games; perhaps a search in UF can yield the methodology for the solve?

Well, not sure if this is significant or all, but looking at it in notepad, and then reading down the lines shows that the last two columns have VERY similar letter patterns

1, 2, 1, 2, 3, 1
1, 2, 1, 2, 3, 1

I'm not seeing any other patterns like this, however, so it's probably not significant.

Or maybe it's some sort of ascii thing.

I've tried ROT-ing in all sorts of directions across the 9x9 grid, with no luck. I gave up with a few left, though, so I haven't exhausted all possibilities, though. It just wasn't getting anywhere.

[SPEC] Maybe the key is a ROTed version of the text. Highly unlikely, but possible.

Edit: Nevermind. That doesn't work.

I'm retarded.

I've tried cracking this as a random monalphabetic cipher and as a straight up vigenere cipher, but it is resistant to both methods due to

1: The ciphertext is relatively short, and

2: The frequency distribution is relatively flat. (Too flat to crack without the aid of a "brute force" program.)

For vigenere specifically, there must be groups of repeated letters in order to begin a crack and our message happens to have no significant repititions.

This really makes me think that this is neither monalphabetic or a vigenere. I can't seem to find any info on a 9x9 grid encipherment that some have mentioned (that doesn't involve a grid of numbers anyway).

Any ideas on this one? I was on vacation for the solve of the first wave of evidence. Does this resemble that puzzle?

Here's a print screen of the code for those of us who have different browser settings. I do this cuz it's a grid and php sometimes doesn't preserve the relationship.
