singular

in the "daily inspiration" from 10/11 there is something that threw me off but i don't know if it is a big deal...
"But the humble man knows
where atop their pillars they
would go."
"man" is singular but "their" is plural.... why would it be written like this?
i'm drawing a blank.... been thinking too much.
help if you think it could be significant.

@Eric: Ooh, nice! I was stuck on thinking the answer was just "in small denominations", in keeping with the last two days' "money" and "capital".

So summarizing what (I think, at least) we have so far from the Daily Inspirations:

Spoiler (Rollover to View):
Day 1 -
FLOWERS. The quote is mostly legit, except that "flowers" has been replaced with "the first of six groups". So we're looking for six "groups", and "flowers" is the first one.

Day 2 -
As of yet unsolved, but widely speculated to be connected to the Letters Beyond the Gate.

Day 3 -
MONEY. "You too desire" clues U2's Desire, with the (thematically appropriate!) lines "Like a preacher stealing hearts in a traveling show / For the love of money, money, money, money, money, money, money, money, money, money, money..." Money is invoked at least tenfold, so it's what we want.

Day 4 -
CAPITALS. Look up the construction Solomon's temple in 1 Kings; the answer to where on the pillars the pomegranates would go appears to be "capitals" (or "chapiters", but CoV like to use TNIV. Besides, "capitals" feels like a more useful answer.)

Day 5 -
INSECTS. This one's a simple pun on "in sects".

All the answers we have so far can sensibly be used as "groups" - that is, we should be on the lookout for hidden words like "rose", "euro", "Rome", or "ant"...

Projectyl--We already have one hidden word "vent" which as mentioned(previous page) may connect to "capital" as VENTure capital funds or firm. No probs looking for more yet this is all spec atm and not a solve so doesn't need the spoiler tags. Smile

Hey, wow. I didn't realize until I looked at Projectyl's wrap-up that all of the Daily Inspirations have been resolving to words that can be construed as broad categories.

I think we need to redouble our efforts on the unsolved Day 2, which I no longer believe ties to Letters Beyond The Gate or to anything else -- if the gamesters are showing any consistency here, that message will simply give us an answer of its own, without referring us to anything else on the site.

Next up: How do we use these categories? It might hidden words, as Projectyl suggests, or it might be any number of other possibilities....

Further thought: It's likely that the Daily Inspirations will continue through the run of the game. Therefore it's possible that while the first six days gave us a series of category (Flowers, Money, Insects...), after that, each inspiration could lead to a word that fits one of the categories.

What Eric says seems entirely likely to me. The second day's Inspiration has a lot of cryptic-seeming terms in it (second to none, casting off what you have left, etc.), but I can't quite make anything work. Two things I've tried, in case they inspire anyone else:

1. I used Bible Gateway to search for many of the Inspiration's words in the book of Exodus, the idea being that for any word that only appears once in that book, you would take the number of the verse and use alphabet code. It looks like "steals" (which would be a V) is the only word that applies to, though.

2. I looked for hidden words. When I saw ROMANO, I thought "oh, CHEESES would be a nice category" -- but I didn't see any others.

About "VENT"

From Rob Bell's auto-response email:

Quote:
From what I've been told, there are seven people inside the Citizens
of Virtue that desperately want to get out.

From dictionary.com regarding the word 'vent'

Quote:
5. a means of exit or escape; an outlet, as from confinement.

Could it be that Tabitha, first year resident, might be trying to send us a message that she's one of the seven?

Just a thought...

 Theories on the Second Inspiration

EDIT: I deleted this paragraph, because it was almost exactly the same as Qaqaq's Very Happy But I agree with the cryptic terms idea.

Interesting tidbit - A guy on Australian Idol yesterday sung 'Desire' by U2 Laughing Coincidence? (...yeah, most probably)

Well, I'm gonna hang back and wait for the next one. I definitely support the Groups theory, and bcjam's makes sense.

New inspiration:

Quote:
You who would cast the first
stone, learn from the Quileute
speakers: "Condemns" is not
in their vocabulary.

I quick look into the language seems to reveal:
Spoiler (Rollover to View):
They don't use m's or n's. So condemns isn't in their vocabulary, but CODES is. This might be our category.

Huzzah!

Sweeeeet, Codes, a category I actually know about. I don't know 'bout you guys, but I'm pretty much in love with most forms of ciphers and stuff like that Very Happy This should be a fun ride...

So, seeing as we have six category's (you sure this isn't advertising the release of a new Trivial Pursuit game?), or five if you count #2 out, how do you think this will be structured? I personally think that either:

  • We have six category's, alternating each day
  • We have six category's, one per week
  • We have seven category's, and the 'virtue' for each week also has some sort of relevance to the category (eg: Charity = money, etc)

Ideas?

Since everything else is going by sevens, I'm not sure how the six groups will work out. The next day(s) should give us some sense of that.

I'm looking back at the second inspiration, seeing all the cryptic crossword type cluewords, etc., but still see nonsense. What still strikes me though is it refers to TNIV, Exodus when that is not really a biblical quote. None of the ones that followed did this, so maybe there is something in Exodus to search out for the answer.... I'll give a fresh look at this in the morning.

Reckon we'll get nothing solid yet this is from Savannah in reply to my asking to be "apprised of the name of the CoV's accounting/auditing firm and their location." Feel I must mention she is always polite and friendly. Smile

How wonderful and generous that you are considering a donation to the Citizens of Virtue. It would be an act of true Charity.

I will inquire with our accounting department as to how much information we can release in regards to our auditing and financial methods. Hopefully, they can get the information to me early in the work week.

I've never done the ARG thing before, so I'm curious: Do these random fishing expeditions -- asking a character for her favorite number, or asking about the accounting firm, or whatever -- ever provide useful information?
