DC also makes sense since it shows up so frequently (though it's a bit of a mystery why the DC coords aren't always exactly the same ... course Melissa is purportedly quite good at this, she might be covering her tracks).

And while I'm still leaning to some kind of transmission - radio, tv, whatever, I'm not sure there are many kinds that reach DC to Cleveland outside of satellite based tranmissions.

But maybe, like a radio wave to space, that's why it takes some time between transmissions.

Alright, at least two of the locations are in Phoenix:
33.495068 -112.014587
and
33.511875 -111.986529
Also, there are at least 2 in Indiana.

Phoenix and Indiana do not have Daylight Savings, which means if there is significance to the times, this could be another error. Then again, it could be intentional to see how close we are paying attention to the times.

I like Extrasonics theory that the fact that the first hop is to DC illustrates that Melissa started in San Francisco. Deleting of Melissa's memory fragments does not support this though because Dana obviously accesses the server remotely and can inflict whatever damage she wants. So why the high concentration of points in DC if the "real location"of the server wasn't in game? This also discredits the idea that Melissa started in San Francisco. This becomes a real problem though because that means that Melissa's spreading was occuring from the very beginning at high speed (her first response was physical control of a computer 3,000 miles away) which leads to the possible conclusion that these coordinates are not Melissa merely spreading but more of her "seek"ing which is supported by the decrease in coordinates, illustrating a narrowing of her search(I believe someone already mentioned this). She has already "survive"d the crash and "escape"d the SPDR.

If we knew for sure that Melissa's starting point is in D.C. then perhaps we should be looking at these points as "hops" in terms of distance from her origin rather than by time. This is supported by Melissa's refernce to a "starfish" which branches out from the center. Again there is no evidence that the times are when things are going to happen. For all we know it was a time at which something already occurred. (though that might not make much sense, but maybe it's because we are missing something)

I just feel that we are being distracted by the times.

Edit - added the bit about the starfish - pretty important to the argument

I'm sure the times are treated like we normally do in Arizona -- consider ourselves on Pacific time (rather than Mountain) for all practical purposes when daylight savings is in effect.

We have this happen all the time. No worries.

GPS coord

Not being familiar with GPS coordinates, I'm hoping someone can tell me exactly how specific the coordinates we are dealing with are. More preciesly, I'm curious exactly how far a location can be shifted with the addition of the fifth and sixth decimal points. For example, what if the location (40.7571, -73.9872) were to be relabeled with more precision as (40.757199, -73.987299)? Again, in other words, when the final two digits were added to every single one of the GPS coords, what was the maximum distance that any given point on the map could have been shifted? Thanks for the help in advance.
With regards,

Ian Whalen

Well, at four decimal places, it was accurate to about 30 feet. So now, what? 4 or 5 feet??

Well from 34.567800 to 34.567899 would be about 35-40 ft, which is what was originally asked. From 34.567800 to 34.567801 would be about 4 inches.

Hope this helps.

Here's a quote from this site.

Quote:
Important: Decimals must be carried out to enough places to correctly reflect the reported accuracy. In order to meet the TCEQ minimum accuracy standard of 25 meters, latitude and longitude coordinates should be carried out to at least 4 places for decimal degrees and at least 1 place for decimal seconds. Use of GPS equipment or DOQQ interpolation may yield additional decimal places beyond these minimum accuracy requirements; in such cases, as many as 6 decimals may be required to reflect the accuracy of that position. (A coordinate stored with 6 decimal places reflects an accuracy of approximately 1 centimeter).

But then again there's this from the census bureau.

Quote:
First, the US Department of Defense for national security reasons, intentionally adds a varying degree of error to the GPS system for civilian users. The technical term for this is Selective Availability (SA). The errors can be as great as 100 meters, and the amount of error varies over time. There are a number of Web sites on the topic of GPS (use one of the Net search engines to find them) that describe the issues and techniques of reducing the error.

Hope that helps.
