War Against Robots Defence?
Trailhead, perhaps?

http://www.wardefence.com/

While stumbling around the internets, I came upon this website. Now, I don't know if it's real or not, but something about it smacks of ARG potential. Anyone have any ideas? I haven't tried any of the contacts on the page, but all this talk of 'logging in' is a mite suspicious.

Darn, that is one sexy site right there. And the music ain't half bad, either.

Believe it or not, this looks genuine. I must say this Ben Way character sounds a bit "eccentric." Here are some links for you guys to peruse. Wink

Article at the Telegraph about Ben's company: http://blogs.telegraph.co.uk/richard_tyler/blog/2008/09/15/war_against_robots_the_new_entrepreneurial_frontier

Here is another website that might be related, focusing on how creepy robots are becoming: www.robotsareevil.com

And finally Wikipedia, with an article on Ben Way, the progenitor of all this foolishness: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ben_Way

I also sent this company an email, but it was returned with error 550: Recipient address rejected: User unknown in virtual mailbox table (state 14)

Ah, well. I tried, anyway. Wink

Yeah, that Ben Way guy (as mentioned in the 'latest news' block) really seems to exist. And he already appeared on Channel 4 before. Maybe even that short film really exists.

These robots (that running robot from the front page) reminds me of the robots in I, Robot.

Oh, and an alternative address for www.wardefence.com is http://www.makingrain.com/war/ as you will find in the source code.

Without the /war it goes to www.makingrain.com. And this seems to be a serious 'let's help other start-ups' group of Ben Ways?

So maybe he is even serious with that war stuff? Or it's an inside joke he made for himself... and not an ARG.

So, yeah, I think he is serious about it (maybe with a winking eye):

Ben Ways:

Quote:
"The use of robotics in the military is on the up and, although the decision to take human life is currently still taken by another human, before long such decisions will be made up complex mathematical and logical rules programmed within a robot."

"Potentially the consequences of a computer crashing could be devastating. Hence, robotic defence is not just necessary for tackling combatants, but potentially for making sure we have control over our own weaponry."

No ARG I think.

I knew that I've seen this template somewhere before:

http://www.templatehelp.com/preset/pr_preview.php?i=8822&pr_code=O6Ud0y1Y2bLnw8zG39UkQBl2G4TJ2B

I shop at that template web-site all the time to get ideas for different sites. The reason that I even mention this is because it would seem odd for a company to use a template for their web-site, isn't it (especially one formed by a millionaire)? I would think that they would want something that purely defines them and the target market that they are trying to reach. Even the "robot" is the same. I'd think that they would want to show "their robot", not one created by someone else to sell on a template web-site.

I'm not saying that it's an ARG, I'm just saying that it may not be what it is supposed to be. Meh! Who knows? Maybe he wanted to create his own ARG?

EDIT: And whoever did this site (edited it for the purpose of the "Weapons Against Robots" site) was messy. If you'll notice in the original template there is an "enter e-mail" box on the bottom right. On the "WAR" site this box has been deleted but the cursor still moves through it like it's supposed to be there. Even I'm not that sloppy and I'm pretty bad when it comes to these sorts of things. Smile

EDIT2: I called the listed phone number, let it ring for a minute then gave up and hung up. Calling Long Distance isn't cheap. I called at 6:44am EST, so it had to have been around noonish there, a strange time for someone not to answer the phone. No voice messaging service answered or anything like that so I couldn't leave a message. I'll let you know if someone decides to call long distance back to me. Doubt they will, but it was worth the shot.

Thanks guys. I just thought it looked interesting. Ah well, I'll keep an eye on it, see if anything happens, but it probably isn't an ARG.

I think so too

I stumbled on this as well and was SURE it was an ARG. Ran over here to post it, but you beat me to it! Smile I'll try the number when I get home.

Hi Guys- Unfortantly not an ARG

Hi Guys,

I found your posts while looking round the net seeing what people are saying about stuff I am upto.....thanks for eccentric comment; that is the first time I have got that one, but hey I suppose it is better than being boring! War defence is serious but well ahead of the curve, but I always think it is better to stake your claim in something new, and I have been messing around with robotics and microwaves for years so I thought I would bring the two together! Robotics as you know I will be one of the largest new markets in the next 30 years, which is why I am looking into but not investing much time or effort(templates are so easy...) until it becomes much more main stream.
Thanks for the heads up on the Email and Phone number they are both now working, not really sure why they stopped.
If you every have a good idea for an ARG give me a shout, we turn ideas into reality....

Yours

Ben Way
