New ARGS and Why/WHEN They Come About
(at the times they do...)

I was curious -- and will accept any answer from anyone who thinks they can explain -- why ARGs seem to come in "packs." In other words, why do certain parts of the year end up being "null zones" in which newly started ARGs seem to be extremely scarce. But other times will produce insane amounts of N&R threads since games pop up like mushrooms after a spring rain. Given a longer period of time, it would be interesting to me to mark just the number of games that have cropped up during certain time periods to see how many there are year after year at certain times.

School.

Release of nearly any sort of media is often at it's highest around Winter and summer break, to my knowledge XD Except TV. TV is weird.

All the kids actually have TIME over break, after all.

Holidays are certainly a major factor in big games, but in grassroots games I'd say a different factor is why they tend to pop up at the same time.

A lot of people see an ARG and go "ooh I could do that". It certainly seems an easy medium to get into - no expensive cameras like moviemaking, no dire publishers like novel-writing, no recording studios like music-making... instead, you just buy some webspace (or set up a blogger account!) and away you go.

It just so happens that most of these people take the same amount of time to plan out their games - not enough. And after each big game, you get a bunch of them. So that's my theory on why grassroots games tend to pop up together.

(that, and holidays. the kids have more time to spend on running their game in the holidays)

Games always pop up the day before I leave for work. Never fails.
