(Basically if they send us this clue on Tuesday, how can they expect one team to find people all over the country to go pick this stuff up for them and, what, express mail it to get it on time for Friday? Ah, forget it, I'd rather just relax and show up on Friday with nothing like everyone else if this is how we're going to be congratulated for the work.)

All right, frustration over, (and triplepost!) but it looks like they want us to actually start competing now, and if they want the physical objects I'm going to do my best to get them the two for the ones my team actually found. Consequently, I've taken off the files I attached to previous posts.

I'm going to ask that any other NY teams who will be participating on Friday who might already have copies of this stuff not print them out and try to pass them off as their finds - it's just not sportsmanlike. I'm going to leave the NYPL find to the team that found the documents there, but the other two were legitimately located by my team, so yeah. Please lay off, it's no fun if you cheat.

[edit: Bolded for emphasis, also in case someone was just skimming. Don't cheat!]

Thanks again to everyone here who helped out, we couldn't have gotten any of this done without you guys.

You took them off?

Oh man! That sucks! I only saw the post about the CD on my iPhone last night, and didn't have access to a computer, so I couldn't watch it. I was really looking forward to seeing it, since I can't afford the trip to NYC for the event. Will you be willing to throw it up again after the event?

Definitely I'll put everything up after, I don't want to rob anyone of their fun, I just don't want to encourage people to steal our clues. Smile

So that's all the information we've got about the Fallen? I'm going to make an effort to get as much from other teams as I can today, I hope you guys can find some more stuff too, and then I guess we can throw the whole thing together like a giant logic puzzle and see what we definitely know.

Anyone reading this who has information who hasn't posted: share! The only way we're going to locate The Fallen is to pool everyone's information and figure it out from there.

Sad oh damn I take a few days off from checking UF and not only does a drop happen in my hometown (SF) but now I also can't see the video. Oh well, good luck on Friday guys! Just goes to show--don't take your eye off the ball Wink

MrToasty, somebody owes you an apology. The clue you went to find was gone before you even left work yesterday, and nobody from that team (who did indeed know there was a clue in Cedar Rapids because of this forum) told you not to waste your time. I'm sorry about that. I'm not sure what to do further with this information, but some folks are being really shady and this game is getting less and less fun. Well, here, I was sent this this morning.

Quote:
hi antimasque,

i was wondering if you could e-mail me copies of the first three clues, I would have saved them yesterday, I didn't realize you were going to take them down. Truth is, I am sitting on the 4th cedar rapids clue (i had my friend in Iowa drive there and pick it up yesterday morning) I never shared it, because, like you, i figured we were in a competition at this point and the clues in the 4th drop are pretty big. I had my friend take pictures of the 4th clue, and I am willing to send you the pictures if you are willing to send me the scans of the ny clues, the video link, and the transcript of the phoenix clue, I will give you the link to the pictures of the 4th clue. (the 4th clue is a note and sketches scrawled on old worn paper, and i had my friend take photos of it; he doesn't have a scanner) I figure our teams can really benefit one another in this situation. let me know what you think.

This is a level of shadiness I'm just not going to play along with. I've been honest about what information I have and what I'm keeping to myself, even going as far as posting on the P161 forums to let folks know the clues have been found so no one wastes their time. We're not here to sabotage each other, and I can't believe somebody let Toasty drive hours with his family when he had specifically asked for a heads up just to get a leg up in the game. Lame, lame lame.

sabetuer

well, now that that's been made public, i feel like i should explain myself:

truth is, i don't have the 4th cedar rapids document. truth is, i was just trying to sabotage our dear hypocritical friend antimasque here, to get her to repost the information from yesterday. (ps - taking down all your info then demanding others put theirs up, tsk tsk)

but, it seems i was hoist by my own petard. i suppose since this is a competition (as you claim it is now antimasque) i was just trying to throw a wrench in your works, and I was going to repost all the previous clues, you know, level the playing field a little bit.

after all, if you can't beat them, knock them down a peg and provide their clues to the world. i fight dirty.

(i had some great fake clues drawn up though, shame i couldn't use them)

(it's saboteur)

Dude, that's way lame. I was told directly by amanuensis that they wanted the original documents, that's why I took what I had offline - because I didn't know that other teams wouldn't copy them and try to pass them off as the originals. The credit should go to the people who went and found the clues themselves.

That said, I'm not interested in sabotage, it's just not part of the game. Last event there was a specific rule against sabotaging other teams - they were very clear that that wouldn't fly at all. I guess you didn't play then? The point is, we're not supposed to be playing against each other.

I kind of don't feel like this is fun anymore Sad Have a good time with further clues and such, guys, but I think we've crossed over the bounds of friendly competition into something gross and not at all what the people putting this on are interested in. I'll see any NYers that are playing on Friday. Good luck, everyone, and peace!

This is crazy. There's no way this game is supposed to be competitive until Friday, at which point we will all start on a level playing field, I'm sure. Every stage of this game so far has been centered on people collaborating across different locations, going back to the glass bricks that were mailed out. Remember how you needed two of them to find the website? There is no need for anybody to withhold any information except for blind spite.

With that said, here are the clues from San Francisco and New York.

Stupid ungrateful cultists.

Now that would have been funny. They may not appreciate all the effort that went into finding the stuff, but I do. My hat's off to everyone involved.

Me personally, I never feel bad about sharing information because that is what playing a game as a community is all about. If the other players try to use it to their advantage, that's their problem. I've never, ever felt that I lost out something by sharing. I've gained so much more by sharing what I know than I ever would have from withholding information. When people are sharing their knowledge and efforts to reach a result in a game, that is when magic happens.

I've never seen anyone willing to cheat by making fake clues or messaging other players with lies, just to scam other players in a game, even in a game that has really valuable prizes. Usually the games played here with valuable prizes have some of the highest levels of cooperative effort. See PPC, where Random won a lot of cash and then promptly donated back to support the community.

I'm stunned that someone is so competitive in this event, which is basically just a fun time, that they would try to scam other players. Pretty much, that is just being a total jerk for no reason.

The thing is, I bet, or at least hope, the game organizers have ways of tracking this stuff. I wonder what their response, if any, will be.

I don't think I should let players with bad manners chase me away from a game though.

I already emailed antimasque with an apology, and sorry to anyone else who was upset with what I did. I was just trying to shake things up a bit, I really wasn't intending to be malicious, and I certainly wasn't trying to "cheat." My apologies.

Thank you Nedostup for getting that stuff back up there though.

I would have felt exactly the same as Nedostup about this if I hadn't already sent the documents to amanuensis and had him insist that we produce the originals. I was simply trying to protect the work my team did and folks got nasty.

Let me explain my reluctance to trust other teams by telling you about the last event: At the location of the third to last clue, the point at which my team got stuck, the pad of paper with the next part of the puzzle was not where it was originally placed (on the glass inside a phone booth, where we would have seen it.) Instead, it was face down on the completely dark shelf on the bottom of the booth. Because we couldn't find this clue, my team sat at that corner for 45 minutes trying to call for a hint and having no idea what to do next. Because we waited so long, we missed seeing the end. Now, I don't know if the clue fell off or was pulled down by a team that got there before us, but we stuck it back up before we left and the tape seemed sticky enough that it made no sense to us that it might have fallen down on its own.

The point is, I took down the clues we had gathered because I am justifiably worried about getting burned by overly competitive people again, and within hours I had been proven right - there is always going to be somebody who will go too far to win.

Anyway, sorry for the strife, guys, most everyone's been great, I think I'm just going to let you guys handle the rest as apparently the lines of fair play are unclear here.

Ringerud, no hard feelings, just be careful - if you guys pull stuff like that during the real event the game runners won't hesitate to boot you.

You know this whole issue of overly competitive people and what they will do to win, there may be some basic design issues there. Some of these issues can be anticipated and designed around. I'm curious to see how this event works out.

I don't blame anyone for not sharing information if they don't feel comfortable sharing and collaborating. That really wasn't my point. My point is that I, personally, have only benefited from sharing. I haven't been involved in competitive games like this where people are so worried about being the winning team, and where the rules of what to do or not do were not clear. I guess I thought this was more about everyone having fun. Wink

I hope everyone enjoys the event!

I was wondering what to wear the night of the event? The Prototype's FAQ says:
Quote:
How should I dress? Should I wear a costume?
Agents should dress to blend in with the local culture. Keep in mind that you will be active during the case, so wear comfortable shoes and clothing that does not restrict movement.

This would make sense, but it is Halloween and if I know New Yorkers most people will be dressed up as Sarah Palin (regardless of Sex)...
