New post from Stop ASOG

Quote:
I just want you to know that not all of us in the Mare Vitreum are certain about our current course. Things have changed a lot in the past several months. I offer a prayer for all of us, Mare Vitreum and not.

Veni, Sancte Spiritus,
et emitte caelitus
lucis tuae radium.

Flecte quod est rigidum,
fove quod est frigidum,
rege quod est devium.

This is from Veni, Sancte Spiritus, known as the Golden Sequence, is the sequence for the Mass for Pentecost. It is commonly regarded as one of the greatest masterpieces of sacred Latin poetry ever written. Its beauty and depth have been praised by many. The hymn has been attributed to three different authors, King Robert II the Pious of France (970-1031), Pope Innocent III (1161-1216), and Stephen Langton (d 1228), Archbishop of Canterbury, of which the last is most likely the author.

The two passages translate as

COME, Holy Ghost,
send down those beams,
which sweetly flow in silent streams
from Thy bright throne above.

To Thy sweet yoke our stiff necks bow,
warm with Thy fire our hearts of snow,
our wandering feet recall.

I'd argue this as a better translation:

Veni, Sancte Spiritus, Come, Holy Spirit,
et emitte caelitus send forth the heavenly
lucis tuae radium. radiance of your light.

Flecte quod est rigidum, Bend that which is inflexible,
fove quod est frigidum, warm that which is chilled,
rege quod est devium. make right that which is wrong.

kinda lame

For those of you who weren't in NYC last night playing the game, you actually didn't miss much. The beginning section took place in Manhattan was fun, the clues were fairly easy and it was essentially just a footrace around the city gathering pieces of a map that lead us to Roosevelt island, where the rest of the game took place. Things on Roosevelt hit a huge wall though, the 1st clue pretty much stumped everyone, and the game grinded to a halt for 2 hours. Then the rest of the clues were meek in comparison, one was even broken, and the solution was written on a sheet of paper above the clue. Eventually, about 3 hours behind schedule, St1cken and team Om Nom Nom Nom managed to wade through the poorly planned puzzles and lead all the agents to an underwhelming addison sayther, and we all sang at him until he took his apple laptop and ran away. The ending was a huge letdown. All-in-all, the game had it's really strong moments, but mostly was tiring and frustrating and a mess.

Some solutions from 10/31

OK--we DIDN'T win at all, but we did figure some of the clues out, and are dying to hear how folks figured out the ones we got stuck on. So, we thought we'd kick off the discussion by posting what we did get, and hoping others follow suit with the rest of the puzzles.

Puzzle #1 had three parts:

Part A: SFIIXFTTYHSAEVCEONNUDE

Solution:

Spoiler (Rollover to View):

Take every other letter starting with S to get "SIXTY SECOND" and then take the remaining letters to get "FIFTH AVENUE" --> the first clue is at 5th Ave & 62nd St.

Part B: CAPITAL VICES (letters appear in an evenly-spaced 7 x 7 grid)

T S U L C H Y
S R I S T N V
D L H C O E N
E H O T U D E
E R U T A I C
R I H U H R N
G I T E D P W

Solution:

Spoiler (Rollover to View):

This is a word search for the 7 Deadly Sins: LUST, GREED, SLOTH, ENVY, WRATH, GLUTTONY, PRIDE

When you find these words in the word search and eliminate those letters from the grid, the remaining letters spell CHRIST CHURCH UNITED. There is a Christ Church Methodist Day church nearby at Park Ave & 60th St, and the second clue was there.

Part C:

OF OLD, BUD KLAUBER LIKED TO SIT
IN ENTOURAGE ARBOREAL.
HE SITS THERE STILL
WHERE WATER FALLS
ALTHOUGH NOW IN MEMORIAL.

Solution:

Spoiler (Rollover to View):

This was the toughest one for us, because it doesn't point to a specific location, and we spent a lot of time trying to find statues, memorials, waterfalls and fountains. It turned out that all we had to do was walk around the pond in Central Park where the game began to listen for a place where water was falling--a small stream running down some rocks into the pond. Near this area was a bench dedicated in the memory of Bud Klauber, and the third clue was there.

The Clues from Puzzle #1

Each of the 3 parts of Puzzle #1 yielded a transparancy. See attachments below for images of each of them.

Solution:
Spoiler (Rollover to View):

When you overlap the three transparancies, you get a fuller image that looks more like a map, with a border of symbols.

There is also an address running down the left-hand side: PLAZA AT SIXTIETH AND SECOND.

In the bottom left-hand corner is an empty 6 x 6 grid that is numbered 1-6 along the left-hand side.

At the bottom are 6 new clues:

1) SVER > CRE
ALBE > PAN

2) GER > HAR
MAL > ITE

3) CHAL > ULE
AJYI > DIR

4) NOL > PRIN
PLEX > POK

5) ERTH > SLE
LIU > ILS

6) QUE > POR
NIR > WE

We then headed to the Plaza at 2nd Ave & 60th St. to find the next clue.

After Puzzle #1

After arriving at the location specified by all three clues from Puzzle #1, we found a frame with a map (see image below).

Solution:
Spoiler (Rollover to View):

By putting the transparencies into the frame on top of the map, we realized we had a map of Roosevelt Island. The Plaza at 60th & 2nd is also where the tram to Roosevelt Island is. So it was clear that we had to get on the tram and go to the island.

Once we got to the island, we didn't have a clear direction of what to do next. The only things marked on the map were the main road and what looked like phone booths. So we decided to follow the road to the phone booths.

Across the street from the phone booths, we noticed a poster on a kiosk that touted a lecture about Mare Vitreum with a Q&A session afterwards. We entered the building where the sign led, and found several groups already assembled there working on puzzles and we were greeted by the "professor" who asked if we had any questions about Mare Vitreum.

This is where we got stumped. We didn't know how to solve the six puzzles at the bottom of the map or how they related to the rest of the clues. Ultimately, the professor told us which words from the six puzzles at the bottom related to the symbols on the border. We figured out that these were coordinates on the map, and we were able to solve some of the secondary puzzles at those locations, and began to fill in the 6 x 6 grid.

However, we never figured out HOW to link the words of the six puzzles to the symbols. We had to go back to the professor time and again to get a new set of coordinates.

If you were on a team that actually figured out how to relate the puzzles at the bottom with the rest of the clues, please post what you did!

I suck at singing in Latin

tarquin02- Thanks for ULing the pix.

Spoiler (Rollover to View):
So my team(Happy Darko) was one of the three to reach the professor first. He immediately told us that he could provide us information in exchange for the blood stone things. He also said that the information from solved clues will help him translate the letters for the next clue.

At this point it was clear to us what the game play they were looking for was.
(1) Figure out a point based on the current translation of characters
(2) Get a clue and put a word in the grid
(3) Show the prof or an assistant the word we got
(4) GOTO (1) until end of game.

We just got messed up with solving clues out of order and not being able to get a linear path in our advancement, but most of that was our fault. All in all, it was a tough game because of the waterfall clue and step 1 clue on the transparency, but still fun and we'll be there next time to play again!

My only complaint is that it appears the p161 team wasn't fully anticipating the difficulty of it's clues and had a scaling problem sometimes at the professor Q&A. I think it is really difficult task to keep both advanced teams and beginner teams entertained. Maybe there could be two games, a true four hour one with easy clues which is more of a foot race. And a longer much tougher one that might take 1day+ for those who enjoy that type of game. It seems too hard to keep all skill and interest levels of players involved at the same time.

Oh and note to the p161 team....if you're going to bring masked men in robes and have them gather en mass in front of a chapel...perhaps you might want to not do it RIGHT IN FRONT of a police station. Wink Watching the cops question the MV cult member was hilarious hehe Laughing

Wait, so there was NO WAY to figure out the connection of the words at the bottom to the symbols along the edge of the grid w/o the help of the professor? The game really required continually going back to the professor for coordinates? That just seems strange--we assumed that there must be a way to do it on our own, so we kept trying to figure it out independently (not to mention the hours we spent post-game continuing to try and figure it out!)... Yeesh. OK.

Meanwhile, did anyone actually get to do the pumpkin clue? It was broken by the time we got there. And does anyone have a photo of the 688?

And how did the 7th Clue work? What happened after that?

Athos, did your team make it past that point, or was it only Om Nom Nom by then? Str1cken, care to enlighten us on what happened?

I might be wrong, but I think you could figure it out on your own.

For each of the clues, there was a set of coordinates...
1) SVER > CRE, ALBE > PAN
2) GER > HAR, MAL > ITE
3) CHAL > ULE, AJYI > DIR
4) NOL > PRIN, PLEX > POK
5) ERTH > SLE, LIU > ILS
6) QUE > POR, NIR > WE

And next to those words was a symbol. So for each symbol, you drew a straight line where they bordered the map. And where the two lines intersected, that was where you could find the puzzle.

Am I right? Or am I forgetting something/remembering it differently?

I believe it was destroyed almost immediately after it got placed. Sad

It was told to my team that those characters were part of the MV secret language and that the prof had to "translate" them for us. So unless you found some clue that gave you the mappings of all the letter names to the
glyphs then I'm not sure how you could have figured the whole thing out without going to the professor each time. The coordinates you'd have to figure out yourself of course.

Yes the pumpkin was destroyed quickly, last game they gave us a pre-briefing where they said destroying clues was bad and off-limits. I don't think that was done this time in order to have a timely start (we started only 10 or so minutes late...which is really good heh).

The 7th clue was a grid of shadows which overlaid the grid in the bottom left of the map. I presume that was the lead to the final scene or close to the final scene, but I'll wait for Om nom nom to confirm that bit.

I'm not sure exactly how we figured out the 7th clue (I'm sure str1cken or one of the others from our team can explain it), but it led us to a bench on the walk on the west side of Roosevelt, where we met Neil. He told us that he was Addison's right-hand man, his tech guy of sorts, and that Mare Vitreum believed in a god that was a computer that could override time (or something like that) and that Diggory's brainpower was needed to start the test of the system. We then had to go to the top of the parking garage where Addison was putting Diggory in the back of a van, and he told us to go find Neil again and then find him at the final destination. We ran into Neil downstairs near the parking garage, and he gave us the Latin verses and the tapeplayer, explaining that the abort code was metaphysical and needed to be chanted by 150-200 people in order to override the machine. Then using the text message server, the crowd was instructed to gather at Lighthouse Park to learn the chant, then override the system.

I think the 7th was just found at one of the cross points, at least that is one one of my guys said. But the clue was useless until you had 1-6.
