Possible ARG: John Dies at the End Johndiesattheend.com Hello,
First off I'd like to say that I may very well be blowing this out of proportion as it is now 2:30am where I live and I'm about to pass and that I don't have much experiance with ARG's because right when I got into them, life got in the way but I'd like to think I'm functioning at least in some passable form and that there might be something to this.
Anyways, there is this book that has been out on the internet for a while now. It's called John Dies at the End. It's rather creepy and it kinda makes you wonder about stuff that's happened to you in your life. I just checked my email only to find a message from David Wong (the author) about how he is taking the book off the website in 10 days and there is something big that's gonna happen on Halloween at midnight (he's got a countdown timer to boot).
In his post he goes on about people wondering is his book is a real account of events and how some people (I'm guessing on the forums for the book) say that without a doubt that the book is based on real events. He won't admit to it but he's gonna explain it more on Tuesday, 9/30/08 at midnight when he takes the book down and what not. I'm really hoping this is more than just a over-the-top hype machine of letdown. I personally think that this would be a great basis for some kind of ARG-like event.
Well my bed is calling and I'm gonna answer. Feel free to take a big trout to my face if I'm making a big deal over this. I like seafood anyway. I'll be in touch.

Well, sounds very... Interesting.
I've got a feeling it's when his book suddenly goes on sale in mainstream stores but eh, I'll be keeping an eye on it for sure.

I love this book! I actually got a paper-back version already, it's been on sale for at least two years (when a friend picked it up for me, seeing as it sounded Lovecraftian and my name is John), so I don't know if the main-stream sale idea is necessarily accurate. Maybe a sequel? Only reason I'd say that is
OMG MASSIVE PLOT SPOILER (I'm serious, if you're thinking about reading the book, don't read this.)
Spoiler (Rollover to View):
John doesn't die at the end. So maybe it's not the end, as John hasn't died yet.
So a sequel might make sense. And he always posted new chapters on Halloween in the past, so it would go along with tradition. But something to keep an eye on, definitely.

I'm hoping that its more than just a sequel release. I think this would be a great premise for some kind of interactive or semi-interactive game.
Of course, everything he says could be real and he accidentally angered something and now he's gonna pay for it.

Just to heads-up, the announcement is up, and it's not an ARG, though it's pretty exciting for David Wong - he got a book deal on the same guy that published an A-list of other books. Somethings still going to get thrown up on Halloween, so I'll be checking back then - but tragically, no JDatE ARG.

Of course I'm only halfway through the reading when it gets taken down. :/ The nearest Borders to me is an hour away (stupid slow ferries) and gods only know if it's even there. Guess it's time to wait for the new publisher's run to come out... Or to buy it for $100 dollars. XD

There's nothing I hate more than not getting to read/see the end of something. Here's the pdf

Looks like this turned out to be the start of an ARG after all.

wow...just wow I honestly didn't think it would go to ARG. Great concept but I didn't think it would go this far. I just hope it doesn't fall through. I think this will be great, at least for me. I can't remember a week of my life and I saw a shadow person like 3 hours ago. This is a great Halloween.

Well John Cheese started up a myspace page with the first part of a story to go along with the announcement.
http://www.myspace.com/johncheese
Also highlighting some spaces between paragraphs on the new website gives you some more messages from John along with a link to this picture
http://johndiesattheend.com/new/photos/johnghost1.jpg
which someone has already linked to a town called Cairo, Illinois.
There is plenty of other stuff on the website to work with but that is about where things stand right now.
Most of the discussion is currently taking place in the thread I linked to earlier, so if anyone finds something new it should be posted there.
