Not everything is theory. We know some things. Confused Don't we?

Madrigals are a group of people who know about the 39 clues and will do anything to find them first. Think of it this way:

Lucian = KGB -- Russia
Janus = MI6 -- England
Ekatrina = CSIS -- Canada
Tomas = CIA -- United States

It sounded as if Maggie was stating something she had figured out about how the Madrigals were related to the CIA/KGB and the families, and I wondered how she drew that conclusion. Even if it is just a theory, I would like to understand what it is based upon. I might be able to build upon it or strengthen the theory. I was just hoping that Maggie could explain her comment a little further.

My apologies for confusing people. I was using the different national intelligence agencies as a comparison to the different families as we have several different nations where people are from. We know families have strongholds in Italy and Hong Kong...

 Houdini Card just appeared

I just had a new card show up! This morning I had 42 cards and this evening I have 43, and it shows that the newest card is #9 Harry Houdini. He died on Halloween 1926. I think he must be trying to contact me. I am a Janus after all...

Did anyone else get a Houdini card today?

Alice

I didn't get one, but I already had one. Maybe they just show up for Janus, or for people who don't have them. Lucky you.

Re: Houdini Card just appeared

Well, I did find a bug in the website and sent the help desk an email. While they didn't respond that the card was a reward for reporting a bug, perhaps that was it. I found it rather coincidental that they would give me that card on the anniversary of Houdini's death. Perhaps someone has a sense of humor.

EDIT: I received an email from the 39 clues the morning of the 1 Nov clearing up the mystery:

Quote:
Congratulations, you tricked the card counter! Check your gallery for card #9.

Since I just got the Houdini card, I have only recently read his letter to Janus Headquarters about the "two words". The only two words that look out of place to me are "Rosabelle, Believe". I don't recall anyone with that name, but she could be a character that shows up later in the story.

On a different topic, is anyone else re-playing Mission 1 to try and find "all the secrets of the RMS Titanic"? I have gone back a couple of times and I did find something, but who knows if it means anything.

I just had a new card show up! This morning I had 42 cards and this evening I have 43...

This tends to lead me to believe that when the surveillance codes are entered you do get more cards, at least one each time. I believe that I have an extra one in my collection now but it is just an additional one that I've already had multiple of. Has anyone else that had code cards up noticed any more cards in their collection?

I'm curious, why does it show I need 9 cards yet? I know I am missing 1 (32) and there are 2 (or 3-I'm not sure) free cards from the Uk I don't have. There are 6 cards with book 2 and 3 which would make a total of 15 or 16. So why does it only show 9 missing?

They are counting the 17 cards in the 400 series as cards missing. We, as a group, are missing 8 of the 17 cards and you are missing one more making 9.

Re-playing Mission 1
There must be something there

For those that are bored that there is nothing new on the website, I think that you need to go back to look for "secrets of the RMS Titanic"

These may not be secrets, but they could mean something in the future of the game:

+ At the top of the first screen of the briefing there is a partial phrase that looks like it is in German: "r gesunkene Oceandampfurl". Anyone want to try and translate that? I am fairly certain that "gesukene" means sunken. And what could be the portion that cannot be seen? And why would the game designers put that in German?

+ Also on the first screen, the bottom of the poster lists a couple of what I guessed were cities: "a Cherbourg & Queenstown". From the website www.factsabouttitanic.com, I found this info:
    Quote:
Passengers boarded Titanic in three different ports (Southampton, Cherbourg and Queenstown) and some only made a crosschannel voyage.
What would come before Cherbourg in the list? I think it must just be "via" or something like that.

+ On the third screen that shows the placard "The Clue is not here. Abandon your search". Does anyone have the ability to read that other message next to it? I wonder what it says.

+ I wondered what castle is in the background of screen 4. I googled castles Scotland "loch ness" and got a hit on Urquhart Castle, which is a little south of Drumnadrochit.

+ On screen 5, the card for Paul Addison says that he was last seen at Drumnadrochit Docks, Scotland. I see on the sign post of the "Loch Ness" page that it must be close to Loch Ness. When I googled the exact phrase, the only hit was for a Scooby Doo DVD!

Anyway, I think that while we wait for other missions, there is plenty of investigating to do.

BTW, I found this translation site dictionary.reverso.net that might come in handy. The game seems to use alot of different foreign languages. In one of the Janus secrets (Orders for Maria Marapao ), there is a reference to Il Cranio Sano Bookstore. That translates to something like "The Healthy Skull Bookstore", but there might be an Italian idiom that means something less literal. Anyone out there know Italian?

Operation Painted Cow
Janus Secret Document

I apologize for double posting, but no one seems to be online right now, and this doesn't really have anything to do with my previous post. What is the rule on double-posting anyway?.

The few times I followed the links on the home page to read the latest Janus Secrets, the info was always old. So, I don't know if this is a new secret document or not. It might just be me, but I think that they are adding new content to the site, even if it isn't a new mission. Anway, I just read the "Operation Painted Cow" document this morning.
Quote:
As the operation continues, local "artists" who are actually Janus who will paint hidden codes onto the cows. Anyone who wishes to unlock the secret compartment will have to decipher the code first.

I wondered if NYC currently has painted cows sculptures around the city. A search of the internet came up with this from the www.museummasters.com site:
Quote:
original parades of Chicago and New York in 1999 and 2000; to London in 2002; Barcelona, Monaco, Mexico, and Moscow in 2004-5; Paris and Athens in 2006; Milano and Rio de Janeiro in 2007... CowParade continues to evolve, not just in size, but in creativity and quality of art!

Do we have anyone from NYC on this forum that knows if the CowParade is currently in NYC? Is it possible that the game designers are actually planning on using real-world sculptures as part of the game?

Rosabelle was the nick name that Houdini had for his wife

8 Missing Cards Are NOT 400's

They are counting the 17 cards in the 400 series as cards missing. We, as a group, are missing 8 of the 17 cards and you are missing one more making 9.

If you check 39 Clues - Various you'll see that the 8 missing cards from the 400's have identical codes to the ones we already have. They are just "Physical" cards for coded "Virtual" cards we already have. So the 8 missing cards will require 8 new & different codes to unlock. Does anybody agree?

Way to go dragongirl76! How did you know that? Now we are getting somewhere! I found this at www.answers.com/topic/harry-houdini:

Quote:
Among the challenges Houdini continuously issued to mediums was one that could be met only after his death. He stated that if spirit survival was possible, he would communicate with his wife, Bess, in a secret two-word code message known to no one else.

Three years after Houdini's death, the medium Arthur Ford gave Bess Houdini a two-word message, "Rosabelle believe," in the special code used by the Houdinis in an early mind-reading act. Rosabelle had been a pet name used by Houdini for his wife.

I don't know what significance it has, but I am starting think that there could be several layers to this game.

How's this for a wild theory: Houdini died on Halloween... I got a free Houdini card on Halloween... also on Halloween, I discovered the secret two words... therefore Houdini was attempting to contact me on his deathdate! If only I had realized this last night!

IF you are an Ekat, you would also know that Drumnadrochit is where Anne Cahill (Nella Chain) is from.....

Card Storage

Just an update about a place to hold your clue cards. I was at Wal-Mart earlier tonight and finally found a photo album in the Scrapbooking section that holds up to 500 4 x 6 photos in pockets. I guess the main question that comes into this is how much you want to spend on keeping your cards protected. This one cost about $20, I don't remember the exact amount. I found at a Hallmark store some photo storage pages that would work great if you have a binder to hold them in but the pages only hold 80 photos in each pack that you buy and they are about $8 per pack. The albums they sold there went for $50 and I wasn't THAT into protecting the cards. My husband found a photo album that he thought might work but it only holds 402 photos and that wouldn't quite be enough. Overall, I think this one from Wal-Mart will be the best (for me at least) but I guess it goes back to what you want to spend, also what you have available in your area. I hope this might help anyone that still hasn't found something to use. Have a great night.
