Sin? You like adventures!

Also I would like to suggest NOT putting coins in the coin receptacle

Tell me, when you're back, I come over to your room then. Since then, I stay in the laundry, just found a laundry chute, anyone volunteering to go down it? Wink

Not it! Raspberry Very funny, Andrea...

The Three Asterisks found a metal box, that we are attempting to open.

Also, that thing about "Passion" up there - Sareff found that word...on a piece of paper I think?

EDIT: Is it just me, or do the Three Asterisks have a habit of finding trouble? First our fight, then the brazen bull - now this metal box...and guess what....IT'S A COIN COLLECTION!

Maybe we should treat the SUFFERING-PASSION=? like a math equation and think of a result. Maybe this can be found in your Coin Collection and then we have our matching coin

Yes, here is the code-

Quote:
It reads,

Numerologists often reduce a number or word by a process known as digit summing, then reach conclusions based on the single digit that is produced.
Digit summing, as the name implies, involves taking the sum of all of the digits in a number, and repeating the process as necessary until a single-digit answer is produced. For a word, the values corresponding to each letter's place in the alphabet (e.g., A=1, B=2, through Z=26) are summed.

Followed by a chart:

A = 1 J = 10 (1) S = 19 (10) (1)
B = 2 K = 11 (2) T = 20 (2)
C = 3 L = 12 (3) U = 21 (3)
D = 4 M = 13 (4) V = 22 (4)
E = 5 N = 14 (5) W = 23 (5)
F = 6 O = 15 (6) X = 24 (6)
G = 7 P = 16 (7) Y = 25 (7)
H = 8 Q = 17 (8 ) Z = 26 (8 )
I = 9 R = 18 (9)

Thinking what I am thinking? We need to spell out "passion" with coins?

No, I think we should substract passion from suffering or 136659957-7111965 = 129547992

That leads to another word containing the following letters:

1 = A/J/S
2 = B/K/T
9 = I/R
5 = E/N/W
4 = D/M/V
7 = G/P/Y
9 = I/R
9 = I/R
2 = B/K/T

This should form a new word, shouldn't it?

I see "Abide" in there. I don't know, something looks off about that...it said to reduce it to a single digit. Perhaps it meant these as well?

EDIT: I see "Abide" and "Trip" there.

I just reduced the two words to a single digit, which leads to (51)6 - (30)3 = 3

Maybe we search a word, that can be reduced to the digit 3 as well and makes sense with the substraction?

I tried PAIN, but ended up with a 4 Sad

EDIT:

Sin, are there any letters or numbers on the coins?

we need a word that adds up to three...probably one we've already found on our slips.

Revenge is 4 too.
Masochism is one,
torture is 9
sadism is 2,

and i'm all out of ideas.

Have to go to bed now, good luck to everyone. See you tomorrow.

Elliot, sorry couldn't wait for your answer any longer, I fell asleep while waiting Wink

Sorry just got back. I am asking him your question now, XaRen. Smart thinking.

Have you tried 'Cold' yet?

Apparently Landy thinks he is funny...

Quote:
You find, conveniently, a book labeled "Numerology, For Dummies."

As for the coins, well, they have letters and numbers -- you know, "in god we trust" and all that jazz, and "this coin worth 10 cents" etc.

There are no secret compartments in the box.
Rolling Eyes

I figured a book in the Library might help us with this riddle. Going to leaf through it now...

EDIT: Retrieved a quote from the book, but I am not sure I grasp it.

Quote:
"In mathematics, the digit sum of a given integer is the sum of all its digits, e.g. the digit sum of 84001 is calculated as 8+4+0+0+1 = 13."

Nevermind I get it!!!

51 minus 48 equals 3...now I know how XaRen got there. XP

Sorry, back now.
I'm glad you figured out the puzzle Smile
Wouldn't we put 3 coins into the coin receptacle as the answer?
That is IF we want to put anything in there, someone died last time....

The word passion actually means suffering when you look at the etymology. Coincidence? I think not.

http://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/passion

Not sure if that helps anything. Anywho, Numerology for Dummies isn't lending anything specific.

Quote:
The book simply explains about numerology, so you find things like,

"Numerology is any of many systems, traditions or beliefs in a mystical or esoteric relationship between numbers and physical objects or living things.

Numerology and numerological divination were popular among early mathematicians, such as Pythagoras, but are no longer considered part of mathematics and are regarded as pseudomathematics by most modern scientists. This is similar to the historical development of astronomy out of astrology, and chemistry from alchemy."

Checking in!

I've found a ring like XaRen's under a pillow in a room that led from the trap door tunnel, but nothing else.

Also, the walls here are "a smooth, uniform ashy color, with no blemishes, bumps, or cracks. Almost unnaturally perfect, you could say."

Any ideas what they could be made of? Not metal, I've already scratched them. They're pretty thick, though.
