[META/SPEC] For those of you still calculating coordinates:

There has been some speculation as to what the 5913 miles link in the following from Dana's blog is good for:

5913 miles is a long way to go just to keep thinking about the same problem.

What people haven't considered is the number of tools this site gives to us to use to calculate coordinates and gather information.

One link on the page goes to another page with a dead link to a datum conversion tool. The importance of the datum is explained here. The geod tool linked to is part of a package called PROJ.4 which can be found here.

Also, there's the site author's Perl script for calculating great circle distance.

Another tool goes to MapBlast, which runs on Microsoft software and is MSN's mapping site of choice. This may or may not be relevant to the Microsoft/Bungie/Xbox issue at hand.

Now inio from #beekeepers discovered that one could track coordinates in MapBlast by replacing the lat/lon numbers in this URL. Note from that link that it shows places of interest near the coordinates as well.

Now why is this important? Some people have noticed that different mapping sites come up with different locations. Could MapBlast be the authoritative mapping site?

I really don't know.

P.S. As an added bonus, but off the topic of the rest of this post, I've added a link to a PDF paper that someone wrote on how to get street addresses from lat/lon. It's overly complicated, and individuals in this forum have devised their own similar methods, but the document's there for informational purposes.

You might have something there.
