No idea if this is on the right track, but "ALAS ARCING" anagrams to "SCALAR GAIN", a mathematical term that turns up a handful of times in Google, including a mention in a link or two about image halftoning, which is the conversion of a high-resolution image to a low-resolution image. Which might be relevant?

I mean, it's either that or "CARLS AGAIN".

I think you'll find that BOTH your anagrams are incorrect. The correct anagram is, in fact, "NASAL CIGAR". This is clearly an ARG for a new Cuban product that you smoke, um, through your nose? And clearly has nothing to do with Keanu. And I think we can all thank God for that.

Also: "thagomizer" is fricking awesome. Both the word itself and the idea that Gary Larson came up with a name for something that scientists didn't have a good name for.

I think it would also be a great name for a death metal band.

Sorry about the pic people!

Anyway, if we draw a line connecting the points, and then project that into the sky would it match up to any constellations?

I've been trying that. Connecting the points gives you... a mess.

And the points don't match with any of the 12 Zodiac constellations, but there are 88 constellations all together.

it is indeed a code. But it's a Datamatrix, not a qrcode.

Wait: How did you decode the datamatrix? Do those tiny squares spell out a URL or is there software that decodes those things?

I've been trying out various barcode decoder apps... some are better than others in different areas, but my favourite so far (and most feature rich) is bcTester from Qualitysoft. Supports a number of common code types, from barcodes to qrcodes.

Okay, let me engage in wild conjecture in the hopes that I might prove myself somewhat useful here. Smile

If ALAS ARCING is in fact intended to be CARL SAGAN with a leftover "I", could the "I" be a roman numeral? As in Carl Sagan the 1st or Carl Sagan 1?

Carl Sagan's parents were Sam Sagan and Rachel Molly Gruber. His son is Nick Sagan.

I like the idea that perhaps these coordinates aren't on Earth, but perhaps astronomical coordinates of some kind? Right ascension & declination?

I seem to recall some game using that... Rolling Eyes

But declination only does +/- 9o right? My frickin' zero key is gone.

Don't you need a date, time and location to get true astronomical coordinates?

Yes, you're right, because stars move relative to each other over time.

Okay so back to the original thinking... Do we maybe Email him Natas map w/ points and let them know we've figured out the Co'ordinates? Or; should we maybe try and dig a little deeper first?

Could we, perhaps, use The Ecliptic Coordinate System with these coordinates?

That system seems to use only a celestial latitude and celestial longitude for its locations. And wiki says:

Quote:
This coordinate system can be particularly useful for charting solar system objects.

That would mean we're identifying objects within the solar system, most likely and not star positions.

And I'm noticing there are 9 co-ordinates, so maybe re-animated-from-the-dead Carl Sagan hasn't gotten the memo re: Pluto?

There has to be a date or time somewhere.

You might be on to something Parthenon, if there are 9 objects, it's possible that they represent the planets. If so, could this be a map of the planet alignments at a specific time, past or future?

Birth : November 9, 1934

Death: December 20, 1996
