If there is a password, it has nothing to do with the Turtles. Logic:

- We've been working on cracking the 'stegged' picture since Sunday, July 25th [1]. If the picture is stegged, the passcode must have been set sometime before that.

- The "Turtle Power" lyrics were sent in full to the hotmail account by Macavity, one of the users here, on Wednesday, July 28th [2]. That's why The Sleeping Princess was able to quote a line from that song in the email she sent on Tuesday, August 3rd.

- So, for the password to be related to the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles would require an almighty coincidence - specificially, that whoever encoded something in the 'stegged' picture picked the Turtles from a near-infinite number of possible passwords, and then, in a completely unrelated move, Macavity heard the song on the radio and emailed the lyrics in.

You can apply the same logic to any of the other new sources we've provided the site with.

Incidentally, and this is just a side point, but thoroughly in-game: I don't imagine an alien entity would use obscure, proprietary earth technology, like JPHide to store data in a file. If the file is stegged (and at this point I suspect it isn't) then it must have been done by Dana. In which case you're looking for a password related to her, although I'm not sure why she'd be hiding data on her Aunt's website.

Not necessarily. It's possible we were given a puzzle without the ability to solve it until later.

I thought the TMNT reference was like a team fight song, not necessarily the hint to the secret.

As for Dana stegging the picture, that doesn't make sense at all as the author of the email states it found a secret, brought it home and hid it. (We know that Dana is not the author.) I don't know if any of these images are stegged; all I know is that something is hidden that we haven't found.

You're either not reading what I'm posting properly, or I'm not explaining myself clearly enough.

Yes, they could well provide a clue later. But WE prompted the Turtles output, not them, and we did that long time after any password must have been set.

SO EITHER:

i) Both the PMs and Macavity decided to involve the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles in this puzzle independently,

OR

ii) Forum user Macavity is a SPY, and sent the lyrics to 'Turtle Power' in, in full knowledge that the password for the stegged picture is to do with the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles,

OR

iii) The password, if there is one, has nothing to do with the Turtles.

i) is fantastically unlikely, I'm sure someone else can disprove ii), which makes iii) the favourite.

Rose, I agree with your Turtle theory - it's a cheer for the team, a plea for help - but I don't follow your logic re: the picture. I can't see a reason for Dana to steg the picture, but suggesting she hasn't because she didn't write the email doesn't make sense, particularly when we have no connection between the two. I can't see how or why a foreign entity would know JPHide exists, let alone be able to get a copy and use it.

funny how all the enthusiasm for guessing passwords completely died out once the GPS coords came out.

I dunno, have we proved succinctly that this is indeed a stegged image? I spent an afternoon trying to crack it (yes, while axons were being examined Wink ) and came up dry - nor could I see how any large message could be embedded with the jpg size that it is.

I don't mean to dissuade anyone from continuing to poke at this, but it felt kind dead end-ish to me. Am I overlooking some known fact? Trout me if so.

It's really hard to prove that something is stegged for sure if it was done well. The fact that it's been so long with no recognisable hint on the subject tends to indicate that either

a) this is a real sleeper of a puzzle which should be put on the back-burner for a while

or

b) the image is simply not stegged and it's a red herring.

a fresh look

I'm not sure, but as i was reading over the blog on the site, The words " Olly Olly Axon Free " just jumps out at me, if any one can remember, in the halo novel, the all clear signal for the spartans, was "oly Oly Oxen Free " Is it just me or is this a hint that the signal is important?
