I think both. If we gain the family's trust they might open up to one/some of us. If we gain the cops' trust then we might get access to open cases etc.

For the sake of argument, let's say the PM is doing things exactly like a cop would. Cops do not give out important information, even to "concerned citizens". We would need something more, and Detective Fish says that this is "off the books" (aka "not sanctioned").

That is where approach comes in. If we have something to offer their investigations it may happen. In alternate reality everything is possible

Police don't withhold information but, in certain cases, may hold some things back in order to confirm guilt in case someone falsely confesses or if it would affect an investigation. It seems to me that due to the fear of the authorities in this situation the Chief Detective thinks we citizens might succeed where the police can't.

well, I sent an email to the detective. I can't believe how much information there is already to wade through, but this looks very interesting and I have always wanted to be the good samaritan.

Update : The Detective blogged again in code. The title "We may have a rodent problem " is the decode hint:
Spoiler (Rollover to View):
It's Vignere with the keyword "rat"
i think tinag may have a security breach. while i have no sharp evidence at this time, i find it highly unusual that the lopez family is having the issues that tomas has recently reported on his page. please be careful about what you say and who you say it to. i can't think of any reason why someone would harass that family before tomas' name was brought up as a possible witness. i like to think that it is just a coincidence, however, experiences dictates caution
Murder, mystery and now this intrigue--color me digging this.

Update on the Lopez Family's FB. Anita's comment makes me think she has a blog or something, although I haven't found anything after a brief search.

For some reason I feel the Detective is a "bad guy"
And maybe it was him who showed up at the lopez house and tried to scare Tomas into telling him what he knew.
I think HE is the rat!
Plus the pumpkin patch picture is from freefoto.com
Edit: could someone who has a FB account ask them directly what is going on and if there is anything we can help with? Tell them that we won't go to the police we just want to support them in anyway we can.
((Trusting strangers on the internet somehow seems like a good idea to people.
I don't think this is going to go anywhere unless we get them to talk))

amandel, very nice job with the Vignere on the blog message.
phyzix, I posted this in response to Mr. Lopez earlier:
Quote:
Mr. Lopez, you were right to ask for his ID. Real police officers always will provide ID and badge number. I hope we facebook people haven't freaked you out. We heard that something's going on in Portland; we're a group of people good at solving clues and puzzles and would like to help you if we can. Can you fill us in on what's going on?

Heya victorgil and welcome to uF--Leyton asked Anita just that and this was her reply:
Quote:
Yes the Party was good. I don't know why dad won't let us have our own pages. Sometimes Adults are just dumb.
Quote:
My Party went great! Thanks to everyone that came! I know some of you wanted to be there but stayed away for your own reasons but everything was fine! Even in this neighborhood sometimes things work out.
update : Antonio has a bad news Blog Entry

Mayor died... TINAGPD BLOG updated again. The Mayor is now dead. Looks like he was killed during a guard shift change.
Quirky side note: I think its peculiar that some of the blogs (EX:Nov-7,10,17 & 20) state information that gives away police movement, local area coverage etc...

Wordpress: I think there may be some dirty cops on the beat. Maybe some cops working for the crime bosses?
Facebook: Allie Flanary make a comment on the Lopez board. Is this one of us? Or a new character? They're listed out of Portland. They wrote:

no me digas!
Dag familia Lopez, things are getting crazy in stumptown! It is my home and I have no intention of leaving, either but how are we to live with this madness? Maybe we need to come together in solidarity and protection?
Hmm..
