[EMAIL] Last Wishes

The Following message and attached files have been left by the LastWishes member Ron Daubert for delivery to you on Friday August 13th 2004 at 8pm (EDST).

To: Space Bass, Varin Eq, Heather Hunter, Tim Mucci, Gordy Wheeler

Message : I heard about this service, lastwishes.com, which sends email messages if a member passes on, and contacted them about helping me reach my friends in the event I was unable to do so myself. When I told them I felt my life was in danger, they bent the rules a bit and agreed to send out messages for me today if I failed to contact them and cancel the request. (Normally they require a death certificate.) So hopefully I'm not dead, just... unavailable. Ron Daubert Please don't reply to this

Sorry Ron...

Looks like we can slide TT into creepy, evil corporation and rule out anytype of accidents involving Dread House.

Lastwishes is legitimate and out-of-game website.
You set up for message to be sent if you do not contact them by a certain amount of time.
Remember, this service was mentioned in an article (link posted by vpisteve not too long ago) about how your internet presence continues after you die.

Regarding "Mr" Richards, JS's assistant - is this Richard Meyers?

Damn, I sure hope nothing has happened to Ron. We really needed a source inside TT. And I'd hate for anything to have happened to one of the "nice" guys.

So it could be that this journal is just to provide some backstory, but I'm starting to think that there could be a clue buried inside of it - like the VM password. LastWishes sent two files, one of which gives us a voicemail, so it seems possible that the other could provide access to the voicemail.

At first glance, the only oddities I notice in the journal are some punctuation. Not much, but a couple places of note, and I figured I might as well point them out:

1. Beginning of the journal:
Quote:
Created New Journal: Ron's World I figured this was the safest place to write down my thoughts for the moment.

I would have expected some kind of break after the journal name.

2. Near the end of the first entry on the page:
Quote:
I am fairly certain, however, that someone has been going through my desk. when I'm not around.

Why the period after "desk"?

3. Middle of the last entry on the page:
Quote:
Nobody else is smiling around here anymore. except Mr. Richards.

Again, unnecessary period after "anymore".

It could just be that Ron's not big on good punctuation. But I think this problem would have surfaced before (i.e., in the webmastertoolsfile.html page, or in his emails) if that were true...

Good spec Dish.

I agree that the punctuation may be significant.

In his webmastertools page, his spelling and grammer were perfect, so it is weird that it is not so here.

I've already started a PUZZLE thread for Ron's World here.

I can't figure out how to move your posts over to that thread - can you guys repost your great SPECs in there? Thanks.

Regarding the missing break after the journal name, "Ron's World": there is a new line in the source. I don't know if that means anything or not... I'm not even sure where the source came from. Maybe the journal was typed up somewhere else and pasted into the last wishes journal, but the line breaks didn't come along.

The periods are weird.

I wonder if the time of the postings could be used as a password.

Hmm, not sure how I missed that in the first place - I went ahead and reposted. Thanks for the heads-up...

Yep, __VIEWSTATE is a typical hidden form variable in ASP that preserves state information. I don't know much about it because I don't do ASP development, but I found a basic description here:
