 		Just to add... I think with this case being solved we can (for the moment at least) assume that The D and those at TINAG PD, are in fact trustworthy, right?

 		Trying to work this out right now... I'm unable to decipher the meaning of "Variant 36" Which usually gives us the clue we need; let alone which crypto or cypher it is.

 		It looks a lot like cipher machine output. It isn't Enigma or Fialka as far as I can tell, because of the numbers, but I could be wrong on Fialka. [I am]. There is a set of machines called the Hagelin machines that had a C-36 variant [here], but I haven't found an emulator for it yet. There's a software emulator for the C-38 [M209] but that gives gibberish with the default settings. And I may be totally of track.

It also occurs to me that a 6x6 grid, a sort of bigger playfair cipher might do the trick. Hmmmm.

ETA: I'm gonna take one step back and say that the most obvious things about this are that it contains A-Z and 0-9, thus the 36. The other weirdness is the spaces between each letter. is this something we can use? Here it is with the spaces stripped, just in case.

 		I think the 36 stands for 3 rows 6 columns

EDIT: looking at the source seems he wrote it in 5x5 boxes. Someone please confirm this.

 		Well, they are grouped in fives in the source... sort of. With groups of ten mixed in. It starts with 5 groups of 5 followed by a ten, then sets of 4x5 with a ten. A five character grouping does indeed seem indicated, but that's actually a fairly normal way to break up strings of text to prevent looking at word length in decryption. And if it was really significant, I presume the Detective would have made an effort at non-breaking spaces to keep the spacing. As it is we see one long string.

Good find anyway.

Playfair uses A-Z with I doubling for J, and no numerals, so it isn't Playfair. I've looked for a version that includes a 6x6 grid but haven't had any luck yet. I can't imagine someone coding a 1476 character message by hand unless they're trapped in prison or something.

 		I think we pretty well shot down any version of playfair in chat, at least using VARINT or VARINT36 as keys. We tried both 5x5 and 6x6 boxes, rot-ed the results, etc., etc. and got nothing but garbage, so back to square one. We tried with the l33t text as well, so...
