This does not give an error page, but only gives the following number:
1230768000

First, good job everyone. Another big step closer to getting that emerald casket, I hope.

Second, so, has anyone done an automated search for further such numbered pages?

I'm trying.. I should have 0-99999 done in a couple hours. Their server is running mod_bwlimit, which limits the rate at which requests are being returned.

Doesn't this kind of break the 3rd commandment?

Thou shalt not brute force?

http://www.usernamecheck.com/ is a good tool for running possible numbers/words as usernames on popular sites.

For 20138:
a twitter with nothing there: http://twitter.com/20138

although I do agree with the epoch time conversion date, doesn't hurt to look and see what else they're hiding out there. I really hope there's a rebel organization social networking site out there to find. THAT would be interesting.

ergh... brute forcing is shady... imo, if it's limited then it may be fine, but it's a questionable practice generally speaking... Confused

I doubt that the PMs would use the same method twice, but if so, then you'll be teaching them a lesson if you find something.

Any info that you could get out of a search like that is likely to be assumed we'd find anyway at this point, IMHO.

[meta] Definitely not necessarily. Even so, yes, hopefully a PM would consider that, but that's why it's a grey area - it's more a matter of etiquette; questionable a bit on the gameplay end, but moreso a matter of bandwidth.
Brute forcing is just all around shady. Sometimes it might be condoned or hinted in the game as necessary, but most times, it's a bandwidth hog that ends up being fruitless. That's why you don't see people going for brute forcing all the user/pass 'puzzles' ARGs consistently present Smile
there's no 'rule', but it's a judgement call, and generally speaking, it's "frowned upon" Razz

Damn, it was a great puzzle, and you guys solved it way too fast Smile

A few hours before someone found the right anagram, I was looking for phrases in the video that stand out and noticed that "Why not make it yours?" fits. But then it was a dead end. I didn't realize that ANOTHER quote by Terry Nanny would actually be the solution!

http://living.oneindia.in/insync/2008/leap-second-091208.html

According to this, there's going to be a leap second this year, inserted right about then.

Perhaps this is the significance of that time?

EDIT: Better link: http://tycho.usno.navy.mil/leapsec.html

"I came to Milwaukee for adventures not lessons." Wink

Ok, I apologize for asking about/for it.

I had something of a use for it in mind, if that mitigates my shame in any way. If there were more numbers there, they didn't even have to give meaningful content there on the site, they might just refer back to times in the video that we are supposed to look for further patterns in. I.e. they might not be the answers to other puzzles that we haven't gotten (thus skipping those puzzles), they might be the code that is the next puzzle.

But I acquiesce to the more experienced and more versed in the local manners and customs. I'll restrain myself in the future... at least for a while. Those riches call to me.

hey, if you find something, great Smile just don't crash their server =P
looks like they're prepped anyway with the request throttling.

I sent Mike an email asking him what he is doing for new years to see if this 1230768000 is actually a date...hopefully I will hear back.

Also, what I have noticed, is that this is VERY well planned. The quality and variety of this ARG are second-to-none. What this means, is they are one step ahead of US, not the other way around. Someone found that the page I found was created on 12-2-08, the day the packet was leaked. Given the assumed awesomeness of the PMs, they wouldn't leave a clue out there that could be found by non-conventional or non-game-related means, at least not until it's supposed to be found. My bet is that there is nothing else publicly available on the server at this time.

edit: added http://thisismymilwaukee.com/20138/ to wiki

Just for reference, Noon, Jan 16 2009 is 1232125200 in Unix timestamp.

(I converted Noon EST to 17:00 UTC)

Ah, that makes more sense. I read somewhere that's what the countdown at thisismymilwaukee.com is counting towards. Unfortunately, that seems to answer a question without suggesting the next step...

That would be the most elaborate dead drop ever...

holy crap, guys!! GREAT JOB!!!! so, we finally solved the puzzle and something is going down at the strike of midnight of the new year? It would make sense, considering that the video was made in NYC and we had that drop at the NYPL. But, my god...to try to do something at the start of a new year is insane. How are they gonna pull that off?

There's still the first table, unless that's just a red herring. It seems like a lot of effort, though, with the vermouth/tequila thing. You guys mentioned the doleful city was from the Divine Comedy, I read some of it around that passage but nothing struck me immediately.

I really think that getting us excited just to 'sit on it' so to speak for almost a month isn't what they have in mind. They'll likely leak some more info tomorrow or tonight that'll lead us to solve pg 26, and maybe make more sense of the new number we have.
