The Professor's Journal

OK this one was def on here before, but I can't find the thread, and search wasn't my friend so apologies...

Anyway it seems this is finally back to life, it's part ARG, part treasure hunt, with lots of puzzly goodness inside.

Email just received:
Quote:
Friends,

I have terrible news. My father's friend, Professor Arthur Morgan has been found, dead, probably murdered. There's a copy of the latest Fordebridge Times on the website .

I'm getting desperate. It's been nearly five months since my father first went missing and now this. I now need as much help as possible so I have decided to upload a copy of my Father's Journal to the site, which everyone is free to access. The first section is available now and I will add the other parts over the next five weeks

The police have told that they should be able to release the manuscripts at the end of November. As soon as I get hold of them, I will upload them to the site.

I've been following in my father's footsteps for the last couple of months so apologies for the radio silence. More of that on my blog over the next few weeks.

You'll notice I've also made a few changes to the site so I can maintain it myself. For all new registrants there won't be an automatic answers console but for those of you who supported me at the beginning, i.e. you, I've kept a limited version of the previous functionality. Just put your possible answers into the Answers Console and I'll let you know if you are right on a weekly basis. Sorry for the loss of the automatic answering – this just allows me to manage the site on my own. Please note than you'll automatically become a registered member when you sign up – and I'll manually raise your status to subscribed giving you access to the Answers Console shortly afterwards. Email me if the Answers Console doesn't appear within 24 hours.

You'll need to re-register if you want to use the site as my old security system didn't give me access to your encrypted passwords when I moved the site over. Please use your previous email address as this will allow me to turn on the permissions you need to access the Answers Console.

Once you have the final answer use the Solutions Form and if you're right we may find my father in time and the reward will be yours.

Please help.

Rachel

Thanks Catherwood. So what's the protocol? Restore that one and tack this on?

Yeah, I got the same email. I still have all the downloads from the first time around. I never knew what happened to this one.

Hi, posting here rather than the old thread (as I doubt anyone would read it there.)

There are further blog updates, and more of the book online. Plus I'm fairly sure the blog is giving big hints to the puzzles in the book.

Given I'm struggling is anyone else working on this?

I'm new, so I'll have to look over the sites and backread the old topic first, but I'm interested.

Apologies for the double post, however the last part of the journal is now online, nothing new in the email:

Hi

Thanks to everyone's help, we have made great progress this week and are getting closer to cracking the codes in my Father's study and Journal.

Have a look at my blog for more details.

http://www.professorsjournal.com/blog/

I have also uploaded the sixth and final part of his Journal to the site.

Thanks again for your assistance.

And don't forget to ask anyone you know who might be able to help solve this mystery.

Speak soon

Rachel

Acre puzzle on P181 of Journal

I found the discussion in the archive http://forums.unfiction.com/forums/viewtopic.php?t=25613 but seems to have died.

Anyway I think I've cracked the code on p181 of the journal.

Rachel mentions a poem from her Father in her blog about the "Third Part of Journal" see http://www.professorsjournal.com/blog/

"A city remains enlightened, A city remains, A city remains enlightened, A city remains enthralled"

Take the first letters of each word and you get acreacracreacre

then add acre again and you get acreacracreacreacre. This is a key to a vignere cipher. Put in the string of letters on p181 and you get the answer.

Won't spoil the answer for you Wink

Thoughts?

This ARG seems really interesting but also really involved and far along. How difficult is it to pick up? The real journal looks nice, I'm tempted to buy one just to have it, even if I don't end up playing the game.

Thoughts from current players...has anyone here bought the journal? Is the game hard to join? How far along is it?

Thanks for helping a newbie.

I'm not sure I'd call this is a full on ARG, although it got the elements. It's more a puzzle trial/ book thing - there isn't really enough interaction for it to be a full ARG.

You've got a fair bit of reading to do, but there isn't really a "catch up" as it's more about solving the mystery than anything happening real time.... as soon as you start solving puzzles you're caught up really.

I'm happy to help, and get some help back as I've been stalled for a while and there don't seem to be many on here playing - I hoped it would pick up when they put the journal online, but it hasn't so far Crying or Very sad

I've got a copy of the book, it's nicely done, quite a good curio/ keepsake.

Sorry for another double post, but there's a new email, which basically just points to the blog, however Rachel's had a mysterious call...

EDIT: I was going to go for a treble post, but figured there's no point as I seem to be playing with myself Rolling Eyes Shocked ... anyway there's a new email:
Quote:
Hi Everyone

Thought I'd let you know I have posted a quick blog about a new lead in the search for my father.

I got a text message from a number I didn't recognise. I called the number back but got a dead tone. This is what the text read:

www.ProjectDereham.com

It must be from my father - it means he is still alive. Go and check it out. I think he set up the site in case he went missing so as to leave a clue to the codes in his diary.

Best of luck

Rachel

The Wordle seems to have some nice new words that are used also in the manuscript.
Spoiler (Rollover to View):
Elias, son of Goldwin and inventor of the 16 position windrose

And also confirms some oddities we have found before.

Spoiler (Rollover to View):
Soryb - although to be honest, I had SoryC

I am intrigued by the more contemporary elements added in.

Spoiler (Rollover to View):
Enron
for example...

Anyone still playing this one? It seems the manuscripts that are on line have all three components coded within... I'm hung up on the text on the sword which I swear is the date... somehow...
