MO:UL Episode 9

wow, time to bump this thread for the grand finale. That's right, the last episode of season one is now live. By the end of this weekend, we should have access to just about all of the content from Path of the Shell. Plus, for Halloween they decorated our 'hood with pumpkins! I took a picture and put it up on our imager, in case they disappear before you arrive. (Look up at windowsills, as well as on the ground -- the ones you can kick have extremely sensitive physics settings.)

I was looking fFor a list like this a while ago, and couldn't easily fFind it. People tend to speak obliquely about the subject, which is fFranky just a little tiring. So here is the list of fFeathers in uru.

Spoiler (Rollover to View):

  • Eder Gira - 7 plain fFeathers
  • Eder Delin - 1 red fFeather
  • Dereno - 1 blue fFeather
  • Payiferen - 1 black fFeather
  • Er'cana - 1 silver fFeather
  • Jalak - 1 duck fFeather
  • Ahnonay - 1 rukh fFeather

No idea what I'm talking about? fFew people do. Let me tell you a little secret; but you must gather around close. Shut the door behind you, draw the curtains and let us speak in hushed tones.

When in cavern, as you enter a new age, you should do /look and see what you can see. Often, some amusing bits. But no, that's not the super secret bit. Come a bit closer, and I'll whisper it in your ear.

In some ages there are fFeathers. you must pick them up in the right order, and they all have one or two identifiable characteristics. In each age, type: /get feather and you will pick them up, one at a time. They are only little easter eggs, which may be picked up anywhere inside the age. Then, to see what fFeathers you have, do: /look in pocket

Go now, and tell no one. Leave quietly one at a time, and let us never speak of this again.

Okay okay, I am being silly. But it is sort of considered a kind of secret in-joke thing, yaknow? Consider yourself inducted.

And: SQUEEEE!!!! I completed all my ages this season, and got in to Myst island!!! SQUEEEE!!!!

I never got the "donut wedge" from the 2nd garden age. I also haven't completed the last chapter they released, and I hear there is a final location to visit that isn't part of the original Path of the Shell game. At least I am grateful for the advance warning.

Oh sure, the servers are up for the next 60 days, thus my link to the official post. But the story episodes are definitely dead, Jim.

I never did get all of the calendar sparks. Part of me doesn't even want to go back, because why? Meh.

Oh well. I saw some people jokingly blame Minkata, but I thought that was a beautiful Age, and probably one of the most Myst-like they'd come up with.

I'm fairly disappointed with how the ARG-style aspects of the game were handled (or not handled, as the case may be). I'd caught on to those aspects early on, but they never seemed to be followed up on.

I was happy to finally see the emergence of fan-run characters that seemed to catch people's interest, like J.D. Barnes and Echo McKenzie. But it seemed to be just too late.

I'd be interested to hear the opinions of those experience ARG players on how it might have been run differently, however. I know from my perspective as a experience StoryTeller in LARPs....

Quasi-nice news. If you didn't collect all the sparklies, it would appear you now can. All sparklies are now available. Or, so it would appear. I haven't looked fFor all 12 of them explicitly, but the ones I did need were there, so I assume they all are.

---

Blade, since you ask:
I thought the game was exceptionally well run, fFor the most part. I would have liked to see more new content -- not just another repeat of the stuff we've seen. I mean, I basically paid a year of Gametap, roughly $100, and here's what my money got me:
  • Minkata - Loved it
  • The new and improved Er'cana and Ahnonay - Loved it
  • The Pod Ages - Liked them, but always seemed like they lacked fFollowthrough
  • Jalak - Ehn. cute toybox. fFun, and pretty.
  • Eder Delin and Eder Tsogal - Ooooooh, pretty Smile Possibly my fFavorite of all ages.
  • All the cool things on Relto - I am a sucker fFor relto pages.

Anything else, I could have bought at a much lower price fFor a box in a store of the complete URU chronicles. And, I mean, I have a bunch of books on my bookshelf. But it just fFelt like I was paying fFor stuff I already owned.

What would have made Uru Live really fFreakin cool? Well, you know, it's been said so many times by so many people all over the world, apparently someone needs to scream it or something so Cyan will hear it:
User Generated Content!!
and while I'm at it...
Redesign The KI!!

Ah, but you didn't ask about the game content, you asked about the game experience. And the fFact is, I don't mind paying fFor content I already own, if I am getting a great game experience out of it. This is the difference between buying some Magic cards, and buying into a Magic sealed deck tournament. I am buying cards either way, but one of those gives me the opportunity to play in something novel and synthetically irreproducible. That's what Uru Live gave. synthetic irreproducibility. The world was just a sort of very pretty backdrop. I don't think they were ever really going to open up any more of the city or anything. You know, that's okay. But don't lie to me and tell me you are working on new content when you are clearly not.

I constantly fFelt as though the information in the world was much too scattered, and much too dependent on third party sources. You could make an argument that, by outsourcing information dispersal, Cyan was able to fFocus more on information creation, while encouraging a fFeeling of community among those who would, by necessity, would need to communicate often to echo new information. It sounds like a win-win: Cyan gets more time to work on new content without having to worry about how people will hear about it, and players get to belong to a burgeoning juggernaut of a community by contributing.

We have only one problem: The exact opposite of this is true. Players wind up fFeeling alienated and distrustful of information fFrom non-authoritative sources, and Cyan had no plans to create more content.

These statements refer back to my original hypothesis: Uru Live needed to allow user generated content in the game. In lieu of this, people started creating some quite impressive content NOT in the game, much of which wound up going somewhat to waste (Which also required people to invent some unusually thin stories in-character as to how exactly they came about their "discoveries"). Discredited and overlooked on the web, lies easily a hundred websites fFull of user generated content, in no organized fFashion whatsoever. Really to bad, too. People have put a LOT of effort into reconstructing D'ni music, writing, language, tools, art, poetry ...

Thus, I return to my second hypothesis: Redesign the fFreakin KI already! It was cute when it was only being used fFor single player action. But it is now the primary interface fFor all fForms of communication in the world, and it does nothing particularly intuitively. We can liken it to Microsoft Outlook in scope and purpose, but with the insight and flexibility of a wrist watch, after which it gets it's design. A redesigned KI -- assuming tabula rasa -- could be built to distribute information in discussion groups or in personal messages. Instead of requiring users to go outside the world to get more information about the world, players could simply refer to their fFriendly KI and get news and updates about what was going on. Embracing the Gmail method, chat logs could be kept and calendar events outlined in a smart and fFriendly way.

And of course, all that stuff should be viewable on the web. Link some webservers to the KI database, so I can read, post, reply, to posts people have made, and view images I and other people have taken with their KI. So I don't *have* to be in cavern if I want to contribute, but it helps, see. Because that's how the internet works, and being in cavern is supposed to be just like the real world, but a little bit cooler.

So, when my good fFriend makes some new observation about the ancient D'ni culture, he can post in-cavern and I can go see a model of what he's made in his neighborhood, then I can fForward that on to someone in a guild, with a snapshot attached of what it is and maybe some audio of him describing it, and they might take notice and give him credit fFor something novel and cool.

Instead of waiting fFor new content that we will never see.

Myst Online: Restoration Experiment
or MO:RE

When Gametap cancelled Myst Online: Uru Live, they maintained ownerships rights to that version of the game (with its upgraded physics engine, for one thing, as well as all new age content after Ages Beyond Myst and Path of the Shell offline versions were published by Cyan Worlds). That ownership issue prevented Cyan from going forward with plans to run their own servers and allow users to build new content.

Well, there has been a change in status.
Quote:
Shorah,

We've got some good news. GameTap and Cyan Worlds have reached an agreement that would return the rights of Myst Online to Cyan Worlds! We're very excited, but at the same time, there are some hurdles to overcome. Cyan Worlds is currently operating at a reduced capacity. We're not in a position where we have plenty of resources and people to bring MO back fast and furiously. But we've got a plan, and we'd like to run it past you - our fans and supporters.

Please realize that this roadmap is tentative and dynamic - but it's a starting point. There's no guarantee that we can accomplish all of these milestones, but they are something to discuss, adjust, and shoot for. We also need to mention that the roadmap below will most likely involve some minimal subscriber fees - something along the lines of $25 (US) for six months. (That number is subject to change.) We are not trying to make any money on this at this stage - but we do need to cover some of the costs. (Additional fees may apply for future Cyan content, front-end shard ownership, etc.)

You should know that the roadmap does not involve any new content from Cyan at this time. The plan is to start to move the content creation - the "Art" - to you. In addition the guilds themselves will start to exercise some authority in writing, monitoring, approving, communicating, etc.

For now, please watch and participate in the mystonline.com forum http://www.mystonline.com/forums/index.php This will be a good place to find updates - as well as through the Guild of Messengers and their affiliates http://www.guildofmessengers.com Also, consider joining one of the Guilds.

And because we felt like we all needed a little levity to combat the crazy whiplash of the continuing death and resurrection of Myst Online, we've decided to temporarily name the resurrection plan - Myst Online: Restoration Experiment (MORE) as in "We want MORE!"

Thanks again for so much support!

The MORE team

There was a press conference back on July 3rd, as well as a roadmap for how Cyan would like to proceed. One of the highlights is that The Guild of Writers is going to be given tools for content creation, and that The Guild of Maintainers will be tasked with testing and approving content for release.

I would link you to the forum threads (where I just noticed this old news), but they have odd syntax there. Just navigate to
> Uru Obsession > Myst & URU Obsession Forums > News > Community Today
(should be the 4th forum under the first category from this link)
and scan the first few topics. The "Roadmap" topic is especially juicy!

In other news, CAGrayWolf passed away.

(edit to add)
Austin GDC track
includes "The World That Players Wouldn't Let Die", a panel devoted to all things MO:UL -- and now MO:RE

Great PC discuss

I hope it will be nice Lives and I came across a journal written by a character. (Journals are strewn throughout the game world -- it's a very rich backstory but requires a lot of reading.) The first time I played the game offline, I don't remember thinking much about the names and dates mentioned in the journal.

Even though the development of MORE Urulive has been progressing (the new account system is nearly done!), I'm sorry to say that outside events have caused us to put this project on indefinite hold.

The MORE project was not funded directly but was riding on the coat tails of other projects. Unfortunately and very suddenly, a major revenue stream to Cyan was disrupted. The current Wall Street problems have had a significant, although indirect, effect.

We have no alternative than to put this project on hold. The ultimate future of MORE UruLive will be determined over the coming months. If or when moneys become available we will reassess the roadmap at that time.

Currently, Cyan is redirecting its priorities to focus only on fully funded projects. Of which, Myst for the iPhone/iPod Touch is one of and that project is progressing very well.

From all of us at Cyan, thank you for all your support.

another version of myst? really? I mean, yeah, myst was brilliant when it was new, but now..? really? I mean, wouldn't it be a little better to utilize the concept in new ways? Like different puzzles, new designs, using the novelties of the iphone interface...?

Sorry, this probably isn't the place to complain about such things, is it. I'm sure the good people know what they are doing, since they know their business much better than I do.

MORE news
Cyan makes it official: "Myst" now in the hands of its fans

from the Spokesman-Review:
Quote:
Cyan has decided to give make MystOnline available to the fans by releasing the source code for the servers, client and tools for MystOnline as an open source project.

watch the Uru community react here and here -- i'm reading them now (that 2nd thread started as just an announcement preparing for the announcement, followed by 12 pages of spec and waiting, until page 13 which links to the actual news, followed by more reactions) -- and here is another branching point in a hot thread.

p.s. This isn't MO:RE (Myst Online: Restoration Experiment); one proposal is that Open Source Myst Online is still Uru Live, so OSMOUL could be one acronym -- some have already started calling it Cosmic OSMOul (an inside joke for those that remember the original game)

No, nothing new on the MOULOS/OSMOUL front yet. But a post over on the MystOnline forum relates to a thread here on unfiction that you might have overlooked.

I started the Blueful thread over in News&Rumors to report something I found that other people might be interested in, but I wasn't going to walk thru all of the nodes of the game/story myself. Then today I saw this post by the author of the game over at http://mystonline.com/forums/viewtopic.php?t=16963
aaronius wrote:
"You have always been different."

I've just launched a unique online short story at http://www.blueful.com/ . It's hidden in the databases of social networking sites, distorted audio files, pop-up video comments, wikis, avatars, blog titles, and photographs across the net.

How does this relate to Myst Online? It's the prologue to my game "Blue Lacuna," a massive piece of interactive fiction inspired by the Myst universe. Much of my time during the development of Blue Lacuna was spent playing Uru or posting on the forums here, so I thought it would be appropriate to share blueful with all of you.

Enjoy!
Now that I hear that it was inspired by Myst/Uru, I suppose I am more inclined to give it a try. It's the Circle of Life, or Overlapping Magisteria or something, Synchronicity.

The DRC has been showing some very interesting activity over the last few days. The most recent posts, by Laxman, Sutherland, et al., are deliberate enough to incite me to post here to let you all know that something is afoot:

http://uruobsession.com/forum/index.php/topic/35623-new-drc-posts/

Speculation ranges from Open Source Uru to a proper funded re-launch of the experience. Let's hope their Cavern explorations are fruitful and expansive!
