It would be nice wouldn't it? I think they want to have us torture ourselves by working out hte music on the cover first.

Re: Music

Behold, I have not come to join together, but to drive asunder.....And that should be melodramatic enough for me to jump back into this thread after my computer quit on me. The new one is much nicer.

So...I wanted to poke a lot of holes in theories today.

First up is the light, energy, and technology theories. The main problem I have with them is that the thing the 39 clues do is lost even before Franklin's time which would mean that light bulbs weren't even invented yet. Also, this hunt will produce something that made you wealthy and powerful hundreds of years ago and would still do so....so any sort of technology is highly unlikely. Though this does bring to mind the thought "things like tungsten and uranium are more recent discoveries" so they could give us a farthest back in time point for the clues. It's a small thing, but might give us a better idea as the things that made you wealthy and powerful in older times was a smaller list. NOTE: So I went and looked up the elements myself. Interesting to note is that both weren't fully discovered until around 1780, though both of them had been found in their less pure, mined forms. Tungsten looks like it might have been in use as early as 1560, but wasn't refined into its pure form and alloys till after 1783. Uranium's impure form has a much older history, since it was used to give pottery a yellow color during Roman times as early as 60 A.D., yet again its pure form didn't come around until 1789.

Second up is my own personal thought about this being related to making gold. The major problem with this one is that if you can make gold it'd devalue gold itself because you'd be making it more common. Plus, controlling the gold market would only make you somewhat powerful, but not necessarily enough to shape the course of human history.

Next up is the Ned - Fiske connection. The cards and everything are using actors for those photos. Planning two characters to look alike is way too difficult. More than likely it's a person who got a job because they have some inside connection (Daniel Radcliff was related to the people making the Harry Potter movies, Tracy Grandstaff did the voice of Daria because she was already working for MTV, etc...) and they ended up using the father/brother/son of the first of the two they hired.

Fourth is the cover of The Sword Thief. Of course it doesn't show anything for book 4. Book 4's cover might not even be finalized yet, which would mean they wouldn't know what could be put onto book 3's cover yet. There's also the thing about them wanting to get an image out as soon as possible....most likely that's merely a prototype that closely resembles what's to come.

And finally...

katsmom wrote:
If you look at the link I posted earlier for Mozart's Adagio and Rondo KV 617, go to page 4. You will see in the second stanza of hte music that the part for hte oboe is hte musical shard with Marie Antoinette's face in it.

I would also guess that we are looking at two different scores here. No where in that score are there "double notes".

The problem with this thought is that you didn't find a link to the actual song. You found an arrangement of the song. Mozart's version is for a keyboard instrument. Wink

according to this page http://www.rauscher-kultur.at/seiten/kv617-mozarts-last-chamber-music.htm and the copy (admitedly very small) my point still stands. And, if the webpage listed above is to be believed, the one I refered to was made for a number of instruments, not just one.

I'm glad you pointed out (restated) my point about the still actors and the book cover, thank you.

Does your gold/steel/uranium theory bring us back full circle to my idea of "love"? Laughing Or maybe they are going for world peace, or a world without borders? Think about it, if you were the leader of a world without borders you would be all powerful!

From that page you linked to:

"20 years later, May 1791, Mozart composed an Adagio for glass armonica solo (KV 617a) and the Adagio and Rondo for glass armonica, flute, oboe, viola and cello for the much celebrated virtuoso Kirchgessner."

The underlined bit is what I believe Amy and Dan are actually looking at. The site does have the orchestrated armonica piece available to listen to...very cool stuff.

For the restate of your ideas, I think it's just a good bit of common sense both in their formation and in my including them with all this other brain dump stuff.

And as to love..."All you need is love" "love is the answer" "I am the walrus, goo goo ga joob"...but yes, that really does seem to be the current front runner at this point. Wink

Family unity, since their all such talented and determined individuals, would make them quite the powerful force for human history shaping indeed.

When my book comes in, I'll see if I can find what you mean. I'm basing all my current speculation off the audio CD's. I still haven't got the book. It's in the post though. Here's hoping I get it before Christmas.

And, you forgot, "Love Makes the World Go Round"

You're obviously fairly young, as you'll find as you get older/have kids, etc., that it really is better to give than receive.

However, if you want to keep your money in your pocket, think about giving yourself instead of 'stuff'. Give Mom & Dad a 'coupon' they can redeem to get you to do the dishes, take out the trash, clean the house, etc. Doesn't cost you a dime, but shows you that you love them.
Take the time to make something for them - it'll be infinitely more valuable than something you buy in the store.

why so glum? Tis the season and I'm sure you think about what others want before you go buy them something useless that they may not want. One of the joys of living in HK (the land of no returns) is that you have to listen to what people say and think hard before you buy them a gift. Laughing Sometimes it's painful. Like with teen agers. Other times it's a given--The kid who likes starwars got the Darth Vader voice changing mask. (It can be adjusted for adults too by the way and it is soooo cool...I had to put the batteries in and test it before wrapping Laughing Laughing )

Did you get that code from your friend before handing over all those on here. It's called a bargining chip Laughing If you give me yours I'll give you 5 more that I've found. Not a bad idea, has anyone tried that with live people? It doesn't seem to work on other web forums. For some reason, people are afraid to give it out.

I sent Scholastic an email asking for 408, 409, and 412. The response was they gave them to their partners but they haven't been released yet. I've searched, but am still coming up empty. You don't think these "partners" are holding those numbers for the futute do you?

I was typing my reply as you put this up. I'll second that!!! I have every Christmas ornament my daughter has made me. Missing glitter and all. She once got a wooden tanagrams puzzle at school from the Santa. Out of the goodness of her heart rewrapped it and gave it to me for christmas. I collect puzzles and she knew that as much as she loved it, I would love it more. Two years ago she went to daddy's office and color printed then laminated an old horse and rider puzzle for me. I was in tears when I opened it. Last year she made me a puzzle of herself. (I could have killed her when I found out she glued her picture on one of my original Rubik's from 25 years ago) But as always, her heart was in the right place and she did give me a gift she knew I would love.

I over heard her and miss Nancy making hugs and Kisses coupons for me for when I am in need of them when I'm crying. That my friends is a priceless Christmas gift. I would rather have all these wonderful things that you might call "junk" than any store bought gift.

I've been having a problem with some of the area 39 games, sepecially those which don't use a mouse, like dogfight. Sometimes, when i get a good score, and the game ends, there is just a blank screen where it usually says "SENDING SCORE". then, in a few minutes, a screen pops up that says something to the effect of "ARENA 39 HAS BEEN SABOTAGED, MADRIGAL ACTIVITY SUSPECTED, COME BACK LATER WHEN THE COAST IS CLEAR"
I also do most of my internet access from a laptop, so I know your pain. Whenever I am able to use a desktop, scores improve significantly. I have a theory that what is happening with the Madrigal is that the website is timing out . Like there is a cookie that has an expiration or something along those lines. I don't see how you could be timing out unless you are pausing alot during the game.

My first thought was... Madrigals! Evil or Very Mad This is horrible news. Maggie had put together an awesome reference. Let's help put it back together.

My idea is that they changed the game so that if you hit a plate, you got a score (there have been problems with that). In the process they may have decided to change the scoring.

if anyone really wants to know, they can always email the site.
My theory is that they found a bug when they were fixing the other bug )no score when plate hit). I always thought that the number of possible points available with the skeet and lab rat were out of whack with the other games. It actually gives an advantage to those who have the higher scores on the skeet shoot. It should encourage anyone going for the top prize to focus on lab rat (which takes more brain power) to increase their score. I just noticed that our very own FLgata is ranked #1! Way to go!

By the way, have you looked up what a Madrigal is? Interesting no?
Doh! Shocked I can't believe I never thought to look up the meaning of Madrigal. I just looked at the Wiki disambiguation page. I think that someone should add an entry for the 39 Clues! So Madrigals are not usually ppl, but music. What did you find most interesting?

katsmom wrote:
And why was Lan Nguyen sent to Venice then never showed up in the book?
I can think of a real-world reason, but nothing like a 39 Clues-world-based theory. Perhaps TPTB realized that Asians were under-represented in the story. Unfortunately by the time they realized this, it was too late to insert the character into book 1 or 2, but it wasn't too late to make a card. By having a back-story of her going to Venice, it won't be too much of a surprise when she shows up in a later book. I think I read that RR was the architect of the entire 10 book storyline. I am sure that he must have a hand in what is presented on the web and in the cards. I have faith that he has plans that will tie it all together. On the other hand, Lan could just be a Red Herring . We spend time wondering about her involvement when we should really be concerning ourselves with the clue hunt!

I think that maybe the Scholastic people want us to buy the correct cards first before we can see the information. Maybe to "encourage" us to buy more cards.
For sure. All this is designed to get us to spend more money. They say, "Purchase not required", but if you want the full experience, you are going to have to purchase lots of cards. No, I'm not bitter that I have bought 8 packs and still no card #60. Cursing I guess I shouldn't complain until I have spent as much as katsmom. Embarassed

Has anyone noticed that the Lucian's are now using the same codes as the Janus? Does this mean they have infiltrated, are going to join forces, or are just plain dumb (or unlucky with their code man)?
Good catch! I had not noticed. I tend to favor the joining forces idea. You're Lucian... I am Janus. Wink

one thing that really bugs me is on the "CLIQUEME" profile pages. Under every character's "applications" it lists the same thing. Has anyone else noticed this? Why do you think this is?
I did notice, and it bugged me, too. I just figured that it was laziness on the part of the website developers. Since the info is not click-able, what would be the point of making it different for each?

On the inside cover/first page of OFN, where we see the notes spell GIDEON - is there something to the ARy or A4y letters/numbers at the upper left of the glass fragment
I think what you're seeing are the letters "Adag," which presumably stands for "Adagio," an Italian musical term indicating the tempo. I'm not sure if there is more to it than that, though it is odd that a clue of sorts (Gideon) comes with a tempo marking when there aren't any other markings on the other glass shards.
I originally tried to make it part of GIDEON. It is difficult to make out what the letters are supposed to be. I had decided that it looked like Aleg for Allegro. I don't think that it looks anything like "Adag", but I like it better than "Aleg" Very Happy . I looked at the score that katsmom referenced and there are no tempo markings on it at all. Perhaps Adag was a clue as to the score being the "Adagio and Rondo"?

Word of caution -- don't try this on your siblings. I gave coupons to my brother and sister one year (I was probably a pre-teen to teen at the time) and they were not amused.

General Observation
Time of Year

I just have to say that first I was tearing up (sniff sniff) because of the Christmas ornaments that had no glitter but lots of love then I was laughing out loud because the "love" coupons to siblings isn't really a good idea. Thank you for making the start of my day off just right. I don't know if anybody did any research on the sword...it's part of the Gurkha weaponry. I suspect that we will learn more about this in book three as we turn to India and the Taj Mahal. I was researching the list of family branch members that starts with Toyotomi Hideyoshi in 1500 something. He was a big kahuna in China any way, just thought I'd mention we should maybe try to keep an eye on India as that is where we are heading next...And also one more thing...that the metal impurity idea doesn't mean that the metal wasn't used. Remember that tungsten was referred to as Wolfram and was used in making Chinese swords. (I think they came up with the idea of blending metals to make their swords more hardy than the other guys. Tensile strength and the heating up of metals can be an exact science today, but it doesn't mean that maybe somebody say in the 14th century didn't have a knack for it...

Point taken, and i had considered that in making my theory, but i seem to remember the sword in the 2nd book's cover before it was released (i freely admit that I very could be wrong).

also, you said something about the lucians and janus using the same codes. What do you mean???! Confused

Look at card 17, and card 405. the secret codes are the same. If you click on the <go> button you will get to the codes.

Correct me if I'm wrong, it won't be the first time.
When I go to card 17 http://www.the39clues.com/cahillweb/article/17-email-code
I see a memo to all the Lucians describing 3 new codes, one of which is the Pigpen code (that looks like you are playing tic tac toe).
When I go to card 405
http://www.the39clues.com/cahillweb/article/405-surveillance
I see a Man in Black surveillance file that has memos on Janus stationery, Lucian stationery, and Ekat stationery. The Lucian stationery has the pigpen code again.
so I don't see a discrepancy. Just that the Man in Black has copies of codes from each branch.

A few days ago, katsmom had 1 more code than I had. I am curious if that is still the case.
ps. I don't have card 60 yet, but I just got back my request for more virtual cards, and for the Book 2 virtual cards. Took about 2 weeks. I requested them about a week before Book 2 came out, and they came yesterday.

Having played with many types of ciphers in another life, I wouldn't read much into multiple branches utilizing the same type of 'code'.
The 'pigpen' cipher has been around since the 1700s (used originally by the Freemasons), and it would take very little time to break, even if the code was completely unknown, since it's such a simplistic cipher.
However, since Ben Franklin was a Freemason, and also a Lucian, I'd wager the Lucians used it first Wink
