[META] Ways to involve new players in an ongoing game?

Hi guys.

I've been playing the latest chapter of Eldritch Errors. I'm finding it to be well done with entertaining characters and a strong, mysterious story. A lot of people know that the game stopped for a while; but not so many know that it has restarted and that it is really good. We aren't desperate for new players. Still, I know this is a good game. I want other people to at least know about it and maybe consider playing with us. I'm a big believer in "the more, the merrier" when it comes to games. I know it is up to the PMs to deal with the players, but I feel that if I'm part of a game and I'm really enjoying it, I would like to get others involved/

So, here's a general questions: what is the best way for a player to help new players get involved with an ongoing game?

Exactly this. Tell people how great it is.
Call into ARGnet's weekly podcast.
Let people know about a new puzzle or mystery (mention it in the unfiction chat when the puzzle shows up).

Yeah I really want to get involved with TIMM but the game seems to be very far in already.

What about wikis? Something that has a condensed version of whats happened, like a reference guide new players can be directed to?

Hope people don't realise that this is the third chapter, and so they'll be hopelessly lost trying to figure out what happened in the first 2.

What I'm trying to say is, perhaps Eldritch isn't the best example of a game that new people can get into. For the record, I just tried, and the story so far, while comprehensive, has left me confused partway into part 2.

If this can be provided, it would really help people get involved. Jumping into an ARG that's midway through (or its third installment) is hugely overwhelming for people trying to get caught up with the story. And since the story imo the most important element of ARGs, if people can't understand it to some degree, it is difficult to play and stay interested in.

I've never understood why this happens. Stopping a game and then reviving it later seems like a good way to lose the player base.

I can't quite believe I'm doing this, because I am the last person one might expect to be a defender of EE, but.... Rolling Eyes

...while it is true that EE is currently running Book 3, Part Deux: Electric Boogaloo -- and yes, the storyline is complex and quantumly entangled -- there are any number of PM-created and player created resources that can help anyone jump in and catch up.

The official PM-created OOG meta-site: http://www.eldritcherrors.com/
This has a Story So Far and a summary of important people and events up until to the end of Book 2. (*cough* needs to be updated *cough*)

The PM-created behind-the-scenes blog: http://www.schmeldritch.com/
Nothing really critical here unless you want to read why the game shut down only we didn't know it for a month.

Much of the game takes place in the IG forums: http://www.sentryoutpost.com/
Register, plunge in, read the most recent stuff, and ask questions.

Most usefully, there is an IG wiki: http://www.sentryoutpost.com/wiki/
Certain players, like DavFlamerock, have made herculean efforts to keep this updated and organized. It would actually be very useful to know what isn't clear from a new-player perspective, so the wiki could be modified accordingly.

Finally, there is a chatroom #stfeline on irc.chat-solutions.org:6667
Any number of players hanging out there are usually available to answer questions and shoot down random speculation.

I agree that getting people caught up with the story is the biggest hurdle for anyone trying to jump in the middle of things. However, I believe that in the instance of EE, getting caught up is mainly a matter of reading through the available material and asking lots of questions. This wouldn't be trivial, but it can be done. Plus, EE is constructed in a way that is semi-modular, such that each Book involves a relatively independent chain of events. The intention is to make it easier for people to actively join between Books.

After the Long Pause of 2008, it would actually be nice to welcome more new players into the game...

It's really not! I would say: watch the initial video, and look at the information booklet. There's some Facebook and email and Twitter shenanigans, but I am not sweating those myself, as there are only 24 hours in a day, after all! Wink

It's not even been going two weeks, and I think it's safe to say that pretty much everyone knows next to nothing about what's going on. Very Happy

It's also worth checking out the timeline on the wiki and reading some of the phone calls.

Lex, I would never try to involve new players in something they would get hopelessly lost in playing. I'm surprised you even suggested that I would do so. Wink

But, of course, my question went beyond Eldritch Errors. I'm seriously interested in that ideas might work for getting players to join a game that I am enjoying. People always complain after a fun game is over that they didn't get a chance to play. I'm looking for ways to help players avoid that feeling of regret. And, as I said, I've always believed in the more; the merrier concept of games.

For the record, this is an entirely new chapter and there is plenty of information on the wiki, in the chat room. Basically, you can ask questions anywhere if you have them.

The whole concept of Eldritch Errors is to be a new way of making an ARG. By using chapters, different PMs can come in and make a game based on the already existing framework, instead of having to start from scratch each time. It is also a freestanding story that isn't dependent on a game release or a movie or other product for funding. I think that players would want to support this kind of innovation in game design, my humble opinion of course.

For example, in this chapter, Jan Libby of sammeeeees and LG15, has joined the PM team to add her ideas along with Brooke Thompson. Brooke has been part of the team from the beginning. They are telling a brand new story just using some of the existing elements. They also have a site just to report the news and help players know what is important, so you can catch up using just in-game resources. The site is www.popetattles.com

edit: I see I got a bit off-track there. I really like all these suggestions, more ideas the better!

From my point of view, there are two things a player can do: One is telling friends, of course, like everybody's already said. ^_^ But the other is assembling a very concise description of what's going on right now and any key-to-right-now bits of backstory.

This isn't the same thing as a guide or a walkthrough, and shouldn't be exhaustive. What you want is a way is something a new player can read in five minutes and say "Oh, OK, I know what's going on." And then as other older bits of information become pivotal, the player can fill in those gaps of knowledge organically over time.

You'd be surprised how incredibly helpful it would be for tiny, tiny recaps like: "Oh, well, this guy was murdered, and we don't know who did it, but it might have been a robot. So we're all gathering together at rallies tonight to protest robots and the robot-rights groups."

The enemy of a new player is that big, scary storehouse of information in a guide or walkthrough or trail or wiki. Don't clobber the poor new people with an hour of homework to do before they can actually, you know, PLAY. And then if it's a good game, they'll get sucked in and want to go read all of that stuff. It just can't be the starting point. ^_^

That's a great point Andrhia. Maybe do a weekly "Here's where we are." post, and include any information relevant to the current goings-on. For instance:

Quote:
One of our players (Mr.Nobody) has been murdered! We need to catch the killer before we can proceed, but Johnny isn't being any help. Johnny has been our contact before (JohnnySPLATgmail.com) but so far he hasn't responded to any of our queries. Being a Private Investigator, you would think that he would have more interest.
Meanwhile, the jewels are still missing, and we suspect Billy. The jewels were stolen from Le Musee d'Art des les Hommes Francais. Billy is a notorious jewel thief and was seen in the area, but the police seem to think that he has an air-tight alibi. We aren't so sure. In order to catch him, we're going to have to partner with Johnny, but, like I said, he is incommunicado.
We're working on deciphering two codes. One is: ifmmp and the other is: vnqkc. The first was found at the scene of the murder, the other at the scene of the theft. The fact that codes were found at both suggests that the two are related, but that's not necessarily true.

Any new players can look at that, know what's going on right now, try to solve the current puzzle(s), and contact anyone who is immediately vital. Once they start on that, they'll get curious about other aspects and start looking up specific things, eventually reading everything there is to read.
My opinion, that would work great.

I hope nobody ever goes the route that Hurts to Heal took a couple of months back when every player had to recruit two or three more. I hated all that gorilla recruitment business.
