Thanks, BB!

I had a feeling it was Spirit Lake, IA. I've been there before -- not a whole lot to see. It does have an oddly "usable" name, though... especially when we're playing an ARG that has referenced spiritual/religious themes.

Also remember that though the sample size is pretty small (one) the physical drops have been in NYC, indicating that the PMs are based there and not willing to actually go to the Midwest (is that what you'd call it? I'm not American)... at any rate with the scales we're contemplating, any possible map locations are going to be pretty vague without some additional information.

I'm about three hours from Spirit Lake/Okoboji area. I've been up there plenty of times in the summertime, but I wouldn't know of any significance other than the two names (Mars Madison = LeMars, IA + Madison, WI). Plus there would have to be a lot more detail before my wife would even consider me going on a trip up there (which is, unfortunately, highly doubtful for me the way it is). My wife has been up there too, and she doesn't recall any major historical significance from Spirit Lake, IA.

If there's any big lead though, let me know - hopefully I can help!

As I was looking at the Google map I did notice that there are two cities within the triangle in Michigan - South Haven and Grand Haven. Probably just my mind noticing unimportant details. Thought I'd mention though.

Surely you know what I'm referring to...

Got off of the phone with Russo, he said that Madison, WI to the best of his knowledge is a wasteland of this formally great country of ours. I asked him about rebels and he said they may have an outpost but he wasn't sure. I told him I was asking because I was passing through Madison from Iowa and it didn't spark any more of a reaction from him.

Perhaps Russo isn't the one to ask about the fax, perhaps it was indeed the rebels who stole Lewis' phone, perhaps I just wasn't asking the right questions.

The book was pretty big... definitely a lot of pages. I'll take a return trip on Monday when I'm back in the city.

X-ref

Cross reference from the M:ARH thread that seems relevant. DD arrangements and letters.

Just wanted to report that I returned to the library today. The note was still in the book... unchanged.

The book had 930 pages.

No wonder, considering that almost nobody has good reason to look at that particular book, in the M section. Razz

No problem. Doesn't seem like useful information, but I've definitely got all my work cohorts interested in ARG's now!

fax/ map overlay

BlessedBlogger wrote:

Which puts the thumbprint around Madison, WI and the Star around Rock Rapids, Iowa not far from Le Mars, Iowa.

It seems like this has to be it- that is almost a right angle on there- Duluth, Grand Rapids, Decatur. It seems really "obvious" or intuitive.

Of course Duluth, Decatur, Wichita is a (very slightly obtuse) right angle as well.

Re: fax/ map overlay

That's actually much closer to Spirit Lake, Iowa which is 90 miles away from Le Mars. Le Mars its self is only about 2 miles in diameter. These are really "middle of nowhere" types of towns. Trust me. I was born in Pipestone, MN about 90 miles north of Le Mars. I don't think there's going to be anyone following TIMM that would be able to pick up a drop out there, without having to drive for at least 4 hours.

A clue wouldn't necessarily have to be a drop. The place names themselves seem significant, and the routes between, as the sides of rectangles. In-game Madison, WI is a wasteland. Maybe we have to do some turning of the overlays on this map? Like the DD arrangements? I keep coming back to the two right angles.

didn't Russo already shoot down the whole idea of the fax relating to a map of the cities in the M:ARH booklet? i thought this tangent was a dead end. did i miss something? (admittedly haven't been around for a coupla days. busy with work/ life and such.) can someone verify if this line of reasoning is indeed still viable? something tells me no?

peace...

To see a larger version click here:

And to see the map through Google Maps with all the notes click here:

http://maps.google.com/maps/ms?ie=UTF8&msa=0&ll=43.818675,-90.769043&spn=6.736756,14.150391&z=6&msid=114812127997633044011.00045de10dd3bb432f831.

According to this map, the Star is located at Spirit Lake Iowa (Not far from Le Mars) and the Thumbprint is at Madison Wisconsin. This could be a clue that Mars Madison is a rebel, a target of the rebels, or a potential rebel recruit. It could also mean that the rebel base is in Spirit Lake or Madison. It could also mean nothing.

I hope this map clarifies some things and will help us figure this puzzle out.

Okay, I know I like to harp on color imagery, but Mars is the red planet. Red, so far, has been associated only with Blackstar operatives (excepting Mars Madison, who is a freelancer who now WORKS for Blackstar, according to her Facebook profile). Perhaps this is pointing out to which side Spirit Lake--or conversely, this unknown starred location--belongs?

However, I'd like to point out that Le Mars is French for "The March." The "Le" means "the," but its gender is masculine. Despite this, I think that the city is too far away from our projected location of Spirit Lake to be too relevant.
