And somewhere in a game business journal..

LET INTERNET GUERILLA MARKETING SPREAD THE WORD

What better way to gain your target audience than to immerse their interest in your product? Why spend money on expensive advertising on media outlets when we can create a fully immersive experience into your product?
l
Why develop a detailed backstory which is only of mild interest to the casual player when you can gain a far latrger market interest by making the marketing campaign an integral part of it? Players the world over will discuss your mythology and form a rapport with your product.

THE HIVE is a dedicated team which utilizes an immersive experience known as "the collective detective" to gain a target audience AND HOLD THEIR INTEREST for many months, long after the magazine is put away.

(note: this is only my own opinion, but I can see it as a real ad somewhere Smile

I meant to post this here, but it ended up in the interaction forum. Oops.

I'm trying to draft a sort of "What we know, in 50 words or less" post for my blog. (Hmmm... maybe 100 words is more like it...? Or 25? I guess it depends on how much you think we've actually figured out....)
I have a feeling that whatever happens when the axons go hot, it's
going to attract even more attention, and I want to be able to tell
people what we've figured out after a month of investigating.

Folks, I think this should be a huge red flag for us. If dana is about to put a summary on her blog, that means that invisible wheels are probably turning somewhere. It sounds like another way of saying, "If we (PM's) have our way, you can expect a mongrel hoarde to descend upon this game after the 24th."

[SPEC] Maybe it's related to the OXM advertisement, or maybe there's another form of advertisement that will happen in the next few days. Heck, they may even be shooting for more of a media event on the 24th than an in-game event (think press releases to every major journalistic source saying, "Go to the payphone at this GPS at this time. -Microsoft.").

I'm not just spitballing here... this was a leading story for CNN.com just five days ago. The story is fresh, the game idea is proven with Beast. Last time they had 8,000 cloudmakers. Maybe MS is looking to quadruple the scope this time around. It's what I would do in their shoes. And it would be a good idea...one link from penny arcade a week ago, and I have spent my entire vacation reading, thinking and working on the GPS problem. I now know the back story to Marathon and Halo, and I want to go buy an xbox now more than ever, just to play these games after the ARG is over. I'm even thinking about writing my Master's thesis on the campaign. If MS play their cards right, this could end up being one of the most brilliant campaigns in recent history.

At any rate, dana's e-mail single-handedly convinces me that the game starts in high gear on tuesday.

Lucky me. I'll be camping later today and tomorrow. (I say today, because it's currently the 23th at 1:48 AM where I am. Hard to believe. Axon Day is only a day and some four hours away.

Sigh. Not only can I not visit any axon points, I won't even be able to help through the network tentacle. Alas, the Real World (tm) calls.

But...if the game does go "hot"... Hot drams, it'll be fun.

We'll have to see what happens.

If I was a hardcore ARGer, I'd be worried if this were the case. You saw what PA did to the Wiki, whats going to happen if ILB goes completely public and well known?

Imagine every Bungie Fan suddenly knowing about ILB. Hoo boy.

That is partly what I'm expecting, too.

You'll need a Mac for Marathon. M1 never got ported to Windows. There's Aleph One, but I've never liked that... and you need the data files to work.

Yeah, interesting bit of knowledge - Marathon was a Mac thing. Halo was going to be. Then Bungie was bought by Microsoft. Halo is the Xbox lead title.

That's probably good thinking. Even if there isn't a huge public event, with all the fan-induced hype over at the bungie.net forums we'd better be ready for a large volume of posts by, uh, "overeager" fans tomorrow.

I hope I'm wrong... but it's best to be prepared.

As Scumbag notes, Marathon itself was written for the Mac. There is a version of Marathon 2 for Windows 95 now available for download, as well as the Aleph One bundled Marathon package for current Windows (and most Mac systems). I'm trying to get a link to directions for you, but bungie.net is experiencing a major slowdown right now... and that's forboding.

Ah, here's the sticky post that acts as an index for the necessary articles.

This could indeed be a marketing campaign for the history books.... TheForce.Net is comparing Halo 2's launch to that of Star Wars, and so is the New York Times. (free registration required for NYT article.)

And I too think that the game is going to change gears tomorrow. Gearing up.

Of course not! The wiki just so happened to implode the same day PA linked to it and has been limping painfully along ever since then. I'd say PA critically injured the wiki, but it hasn't had the good sense to lay down and die yet.

You know what, I read your previous post as sarcasm -- hell, I'm still reading it as sarcasm -- but if you're were agreeing with krystyn, I apologize for my confusion.

Locked, cocked, and ready to rock!

LET'S DO THIS!

-Mr. Walker enters Correlation Standby Mode, and is awaiting the data feed from Beekeeper Group's field agents.

I don't really understand what you're trying to say....how does being an ARGer make someone worry more about the wiki going down than a Bungee fan?

And what's so terrible about Bungee fans knowing about ILB? It's not like we're trying to keep it a secret.........

I guess the first poster is commenting on the effect that a huge influx of new people - such as every Bungie fan - would have on the tools that those at the very frontline are trying to use to solve this thing. Imagine if Unfiction went down (touch wood). Those who are going to co-ords, co-ordinating data, beavering away are more affected than those watching who're just along for the ride; though I don't think it's a distinction between "ARGers" and "Bungie Fans" per se (this discussion has been had before, so let's not go into that, eh? Just call 'em puzzle-solvers and puzzle-watchers..).
