PM'd you...I'm back playing this one....looks like we've got to the 12th to save the Prof. Shocked

EDIT: Ok so I think we've hit the point where we need to share...

I've solved puzzles 1-14 and can probably remember how with a bit of effort and 16 & 17 too. Nothing for 15.

Can't see anything in the crime reports.

I think the Zodiac Killer code and the Phaistos are just there to hurt our heads, as there can't be an expectation to crack those (shurely?) unless they don't match the originals...

On to the book:

Fibonacci comes up a few times, however 1-3-1-5 is a little ambiguous

pg 17... the pentagon creche poem. I get the numbers as 3, 6, 12, 14, 19 which could give EFLNS ?

66 & 67 - easy enough to solve
74 - no idea
76 - not tried yet
81 - Ok so they're numbers..we need to find a sQuare..why a capital Q? yeah, no idea
93 - 9 numbers, 9 words....can't get anything meaningful
104 - words of T ...I think is just a link to Tristan & Isolde, as are most of the references on 105
114 & 115 - The 3 stars (pentagrams) I think anagram...maybe?
117 - only identified Winchester so far (the round table)
119 - Fibonacci code again, quite straightforward
121 - the first of the symbol code (which I suspect will be key to cracking this whole thing)
123 - paper folding fun!!
133 - ???
134 - not tried
141 - the symbol code again
149 - zodiac signs upside down & "into trust or slaughtered" I think the phrase relates to the overall story...but could be an anagram
150 & 151 - tapestry..need to translate?
154 gives the date 23rd April (but there's lots of dates scattered through the book)
160 - symbol code
167 - symbol code
170 - ditto
173 - and again
174 - interesting, but got nothing useful
180 - symbol code
181 - code that I'm sure I cracked, but can't find now Rolling Eyes
185 - mosiac pattern - pretty easy when you spot how
188 & 189 - clearly shows how to find the treasure, with the right place time and object. Not cracked the code though.

I didn't really look at the Wordle just seemed like lots of related words?

Not even started on the manuscripts yet....

Ugh... so many questions... and that's not even the random small nuggets of info in the text..

Hopefully the list will help the discussion, or prompt more help....

I'll do my best ....

You should have a good idea of the story element if you've read the blog? (Save the Professor & find ancient treasure at the same time).

How to do that then? Well there's loads of codes and puzzles spread throughout, although so far the codes I've broken are more hints than anything concrete. I think the full answer needs to be deduced from the text, but then I also think the symbol code could be a biggie...and in a nutshell we need to find a location, an object, and a date (and probably time?)

Does it helps?

The puzzle numbers you give above correspond to ??? Not clear on that. It's a LOT of info to digest, but I'll do my best.

Alisdair... I'll add to your lore below...

pg 17... the pentagon creche poem. I get the numbers as 3, 6, 12, 14, 19 which could give EFLNS ?

I've read this a million different ways -it could simply be
Spoiler (Rollover to View):
1936 -1412 as dates
or if you take your numbers and choose those words from the poem and take the first letters, you get
Spoiler (Rollover to View):
FETCH
or if you do a count of those letters you get
Spoiler (Rollover to View):
HOLY E

35 - Don't forget this one...
Spoiler (Rollover to View):
morse code

66 & 67 - easy enough to solve

Easy for you, oh wise one... I had to get help on this one...

72 - 72 - Don't forget these.
Spoiler (Rollover to View):
A classic counting one...

74 - no idea
Spoiler (Rollover to View):
Look at the lines on the palms... count again... lower left up and around (just like 35)

76 - not tried yet
I know I have this somewhere... so it must be a simple substitution or easily determined vigniere... I got this one early...

81 - Ok so they're numbers..we need to find a sQuare..why a capital Q? yeah, no idea

I LOVE this one...and actually got it without help!
Spoiler (Rollover to View):
those are arabic numerals. going from 1 to 5... if you put them in a 5 x5 grid, and then populate the grid with 25 of the 26 letters (context will tell you whether to eliminate the J or the Q - or perhaps there is another clue to that) then your pairs will find the answer...

93 - 9 numbers, 9 words....can't get anything meaningful

Rachel gives us clues to this one...
Spoiler (Rollover to View):
codex... but where to start? Oh, wait, there's a line capitalized... ENGLAND... start there and then rotate your virtual codex either down or up and it will be as easy as pulling a sword from a stone!

104 - words of T ...I think is just a link to Tristan & Isolde, as are most of the references on 105

Agreed... so I guess it just adds to the story..?

114 & 115 - The 3 stars (pentagrams) I think anagram...maybe?

Absolutely clueless on this. I thought for a time they were missing letters of some puzzle... and then again I thought perhaps they were a map around that particular region... London, York or something... still clueless...

117 - only identified Winchester so far (the round table)

Me too..

119 - Fibonacci code again, quite straightforward

Spoiler (Rollover to View):
Substitution, yup

121 - the first of the symbol code (which I suspect will be key to cracking this whole thing)

I had a really hard time seeing this one clearly for a while... finally figured it out (after getting the other symbol codes first.) I like these.. fun...

123 - paper folding fun!!

133 - ???

Spoiler (Rollover to View):
I matched the numerals and saw which ones went through the eyes... but what the heck does that give us? Nothing....

134 - not tried
Spoiler (Rollover to View):
Finally got with help... Use the wordle to help you with this one... substitution

141 - the symbol code again

I started here... It made it all work out. I love this particular one and it was all because of
Spoiler (Rollover to View):
the PRofessors letter - that showed us how (pigpen) Really fun...
That's why I love this puzzle, it is elegant. Really elegantly crafted and put together. That I am too dense to finally solve it is MY shortcoming... I just hope someone can do it...

147 - Simple date that we can rule out...

149 - zodiac signs upside down & "into trust or slaughtered" I think the phrase relates to the overall story...but could be an anagram

I have gone on record as hating all forms of anagrams so I hope not... lol

Why upside down? Does that mean we turn it over? what about the double letters? ANYBODY solve that one? After all is said and done, I'd love to know how to do that. i've lost too many braincells on that.

150 & 151 - tapestry..need to translate?

I assumed it was a straight forward Latin translation.

154 gives the date 23rd April (but there's lots of dates scattered through the book)

But there's one rule that eliminates a lot of them... hmmm?

160 - symbol code

163 - don't forget this one...
164 - the riddle at the bottom probably means something...

167 - symbol code

168 - the effigies are based on the real ones, but are out of sequence...
and one may be wrong...

170 - ditto

171 - easy one not to forget..

173 - and again

Okay... so why did Rachel tell us the sequence is important or the location or whatever? It doesn't seem to help one way or another...

174 - interesting, but got nothing useful

I've gone back and forth on this one... the numbers at the end... but like the eye one, what gives?

180 - symbol code
181 - code that I'm sure I cracked, but can't find now
Spoiler (Rollover to View):
Vigniere - yes, you solved it. I learned it from you..based on Rachel's blog A city... sequence.

185 - mosiac pattern - pretty easy when you spot how

Another clever one I loved... I think this was the first puzzle I solved.

188 & 189 - clearly shows how to find the treasure, with the right place time and object. Not cracked the code though.

I think I did at some point... have the code... I'll look it up in my notes...

Now about that sword in the tapestry.....

Okay now for the manuscript...

Title page

Madonna and child?
STSV text?
Deer's eyes?
Nar... (Nose or river?)

Latin translated by Rachel...
Grid window... 8x8 grid... 2x7 beneath it. Romanus is seven letters... Many of our codes are divisible by 8... The trio of glass panes at the top is frequently referred to in architecture as a Fleur de Lis and is representative of many of hte arches we have seen (didn't Rachel or Helen or somebody tell us to look up?) in the journal.

The WElls?

The sword in the manuscript seems to hold the date... or does it... don't know... I'm hoping this is a substitution or something not an anagram...

I do know that www and com are both in there if it IS an anagram... I hope so that is not the case...

Fleur de Lises... The lower right is Florentine... no clue on the others...

The location quadrant... are the letters representative of rivers?
All of them?

Is the last page another wordle? Or is simply there to tease us...

[/spoiler]

Freely stolen from my other forum, I hope the author doesn't mind:
Quote:
Twas three weeks before the fated Twelth; And all through the website.
Not a creature was stirring not even a dust mite.
Neither gold bug nor dancing man was seen lurking 'round;
No Pigpen was here - not even the one from Charlie Brown.
I kept hoping my nudging would arouse such a clatter,
But I kept staring blankly wondering what was the matter.
Nothing appeared on my blurry ol' screen but a sword,
Imprinted on cloth - though I discerned not a word.
I spun it and spinned it and whirled it around,
And twisted and turned it though it made not a sound.
Not that it mattered, at this tardy date,
The lack of object and location would seal the Prof's fate.
With my puffy red face from attempting the zodiac;
I felt grizzled and owly like a great big old Kodiak.
Laying my finger upside of my nose;
I had no reason to do so, it just itched, I suppose.
With a gesture all too seeming imbecilic,
I tried turning all the incipient fonts to cyrillic.
It did nothing to help, but it did look quite silly,
And I laughed til it hurt deep inside of my belly.
And I could not stop chuckling til I knocked into a shelf;
And I wee-weed all over in spite of myself.
With my good eye I squinted and the other still clogged,
I saw no new help in any old blog.
I would whistle to my crew, I would give them a call,
But no reindeer were present; they were all at the mall.
No Henry, no Arthur, no comet, no cupid,
No Elias of Dereham, boy am I stupid.
All I could say since my strategies turned lame,
Is Merry Christmas to all, thanks for helping me enjoy this game...

(I'm not even playing this game, but the poem strikes a chord with puzzlers of all kinds)

just getting started

As always, I'm slow when it comes to starting puzzles. I was looking through old posts and I found this:

God... *another* disappearance?!?

Once I registered, going in to the Professor's Study there's loads of things to click on, some PDF downloads and whatnot.

All of the links are dead. Does anyone have copies of this they would be willing to share with me? Pm me if you do and I'll give an email address to send it to.

Thanks for your help.

EDIT: Embarassed I found them. Embarassed

pigpen cipher

Looking at the last page of the letter to Rachel, the professor gives us 3 drawings. Now I am sure these are used for a pigpen cipher, but If I break each into 9 I get 27 squares. More than I have letters for. Is that the right way to do this one? This cipher is used for so many of the puzzles in here. I would hate to get started and find out I've gone wrong once again.

Ok, I've worked it out for most of the pages, but page 141 stumps me. This doesn't fit hte pattern. How is this page done. I would appreciate any help.

Like many puzzles (or telegrams) there is an

As to 141... if you could figure out the others, you can figure out this...

Thanks for the hint.
I've been reading the intro and it says there are 50 clues in the journal. I've found 23. Have you found more?

Page numbers are above... there are 37 or so that we listed, but there are some others that are puzzlesqu... like the riddle, or maybe there are multiple on one page such as the cipher AND the Indiana Jones sunlight director thingy...

I have long thought that there must be some more puzzles embedded in the text in some places. It doesn't seem consistent that there are long stretches where no puzzles are found - only backstory. Such as the King Henry Shakespeare thing. I keep thinking the drawings are important. Or what about that beautiful drawing of Rachel - why include it? It must be a puzzle too... is it the date?

I've also wondered why some elements are attached to the puzzle that seem purely superfluous... like the Fordebridge Times. Any body find a puzzle in there? In the Professors letter (a similar web-only artifact) we have the key to the pigpen... why not in the Police Reports or the newspaper...?

One thing we have to keep in mind is that this was intended to be a book AND web puzzle. It was more vaguely ARGish to begin with. The blog that was on Rachel's own site was interactive though I was the only person trying to stir it up and have fun in character... it eventually moved over to the general site.

I thought too that the bank of Fordebridge might be a part of the solve because we are told explicitly it can be accessed from anywhere in the world if you have the passcodes... and the Globe anagram seems to leads us there - if we can figure out the second half - which no one claims to have done.

The Manuscript I believe was always intended to be important, but it seems it could contain the whole puzzle at this point...

In any event, I think this has been one of the better hunts I've seen. Truly beautiful in construction with puzzles that are challenging, but not out of reach. I'd love to know exactly where all the puzzles are too, but I've been resolved for a long time that I am not going to be anywhere close to a solve but maybe I can help someone else solve the thing.

I still look at that darned sword text pretty much every day... darned it...

If I can help with some areas, let me know...

Enjoy...
John

I've recieved an email saying the journal is on the way. I just had to have it. By the looks of the youtube video there are more things in hte journal than on line but I could be wrong. I've sent the link to a puzzle trialler in the hopes that she can help out as well. I must admit I am stuck on quite a few of the puzzles from the journal yet, but I shall carry on in the hopes I can solve them.

Afterall, we can't give up on the professor can we?

I believe it's all a matter of timing actually. I think given time, the more lithsome amongst those so gathered here would solve it handily... but I think now that we have a deadline - which I think is a good thing (Cause I want someone to solve it and tell us!!!) - I believe only a handful of folks will step up.

PM me if you have specific questions on specific, uh, questions... I tried to hint or tell most of what I know above... but you never know...
