I'm a huge fan of John Robert Maddox SPQR series.

The little one and I are in the middle of Tom Sawyer having finished Uncle Tom's Cabin and recently Robinson Cruseo. My husband brought home the dvd of Journey to the center of the earth and that's the next one on our list of classics. She get's them at bedtime intermixed with Rainbow faries Rolling Eyes We have to read good books too. Laughing

Nice try, buy I teach university and graduate students. I don't think they are reading the 39 clues. And if they are, I won't give them an A because they have too much time on their hands and they are wasting time playing a game when they should be working on improving their English for their Thesis. Laughing

Playing games can help them release stress and maybe their younger brother/sister/cousin may be obcessed with this series. You may never know what generation Y is up to nowadays...

P.S: Maybe you should encourage them to read 39 clues to improve their english. Laughing

Tom Sawyer and Robinson Crusoe. Ah... the good old classics. Too bad new good books are getting harder to find and the joy of reading is getting more and more expensive. Just look at the 39 clues and how much its costing us.

What is wrong with classics, and there is never such a thing as a book that is too expensive. I pay British Pound to HK dollar conversions. Right now the pound is trading at 13:1. But my exchange rate is still at 18:1. But I would rather give up lunch for a week than a book for a day.
On average I get through around 4 books a week. My daughter is hovering at 2. That doesn't include all those "academic texts" I have to buy and read for work....Want my monthly book bill? And can you guess who never complains about the electric bills? Laughing Laughing

Most of my students come from the mainland. No younger brothers or sisters. To make matters worse, on average the typical Hong Kong household owns less than 10 books Shocked Kids here are beaten for reading a book for pleasure (It's often in the papers). At this stage, it's vocabulary and academic style they need. The 39 clues won't help. Besides, they stopped taking my recommendations ages ago when I told them about Teacher Man.

Hmm.... I suppose if you had a million dollars you would buy the national library then? Laughing Still, we cant spend too much on books, even though i can read 7-10 books a week. Economy is said to be going down. Conversion is not in our favour.

I pity those who get beaten because of reading. It makes us feel lucky to be able to enjoy reading. Unfortunately, a lot of prople in generation Y refuse to read even with all the campaigns in schools, offices and public places. Computer games and game consules are ruling the 21st century.

It's true that a room without books is like a body without a soul and its good that when I get a little money, I buy books. If I have money left over, I buy food or clothes. But that was many centuries ago. People now are into computers and gadgets rather than good old books. Sad

Unforutunately, books are said to be extinct in the future due to the rise of computer technology.

Books my young friend, will never become "extinct" True, many are going on line, but not everyone has access to the net. Not everyone plays computer games. The government in Singapore tried to put textbooks all on handheld computerish devices. It didn't work. People and by this I mean students didn't like it.

You see, if you were just a tad more mature you would have read a bit more. You might realize that it was proposed that people would stop reading when The radio was first made accessable to most homes people said books would become extinct, the same happened with television.

And no, I would never buy the national library. I would open a book store. Wink With a coffee pot that self brews.

I don't think you don't fully understand the quotes I gave. I have more but will refrain. Many people in this world still value books for what they are. The internet is a tool like a screwdriver or a hammer. I use it a lot for my research. It makes life easier. But at the same time, I can't easily curl up with a good book on it. Yes I've purchased books to read on line, yes I own more than one laptop, yes I've had a blackberry (borrowed from work so I could download books) but for me, a book is much better. There is nothing in the world like the feeling when you first pull open that front cover, there is nothing more fulfilling when you wrap the rubberbands back around a well loved paperback. The smell of old books can never be transmitted over the internet.

Heck, some of us doen't even watch television for more than an hour or two a week. Would you like to come live in my house for a week or two? I'l guarantee by the end of that time you will either be cured of your need/love/addiction to technology, or you will have gone insane and been put in a home somewhere Laughing Laughing

And this is one of the reasons I'm enjoying the 39 clues. It gives my daughter and I a jumping board for so much more than just playing games on the computer. Does she play them? Of course. That's a part of the draw, and the book only took us a week of nights to read, but the information in them, the deduction and the cross-referencing, and the research has taken us what, 3 months now, and we still aren't any where close to being done. My disappointment with the whole thing is not the change in the scoring, or the limited number of games, but the weblinks and more hints hidden inside them. So far, everything is pretty much in your face. There isn't enough to do. Even our Highlights puzzle magazine (Top secret adventures) has more meat to it.

And now I will return you to your regularly scheduled discussion about the 39 clues....

Extinct Books

I have to agree with Katsmom; books won't go extinct. I'm Jewish (I'm not referring to religious texts, but it also applies to them), and on our sabbath we can't use computers or television. We read, and someone Jewish will make sure that we can still read then.

those are just a few. Go get a library card and check out some books. I eat them and have found many newly published books that I've devoured recently.

Are you a cow or some old cowboy who eats his secret messages? I didnt know that humans can devour books and live. Laughing

P.S: Books are high in fibre.

I thought it was a goat that ate paper Wink

Other books I've enjoyed over the years include
Artemus Fowl series
Phillip Pullman
And let's not forget the Chronicles of Narnia
Jean Auel's series
was unputdownable (is that a word?)

ive read most of those books but ill try flyte. if u like the alchemist, then u should read "Cirque du Freak" and "Demonata" by Darren Shan. Also, try "The Kite Runner" and "A Thousand Splendid Suns" by Khaled Hosseini.

If you are interested in Flyte, I would suggest starting with Magyk, the first book in the series.

Smile I've read the series, but Flyte was the only one I could see the title of. I suppose the rest are on a book shelf somewhere. Thanks for the title Maggie.

Another set I enjoyed was the Inkheart series. There are many good books out there Ekatprof. You just have to look for them.

The Mysterious Benedict Society is also a really good series although it's newer and it only has 2 books so far and a third is coming out.

I'm not mad at you I just think you're pathetic. You do know they will take down your fake scores right.

I'm not going to cheat but how did you get those scores so I can e-mail 39 clues and tell them.
