ARG Immersion
Question

Okay, Im new to ARG's. Ive never really played one until the past few months and I dont really understand why ARG's are so interesting and immersive to other people. I cant seem to get into this "Altered Reality". The first ARG I played was the Dharma Wants You. I found it boring. I got to play once a week for about an hour and was very much let down by it. I suppose it might be because it is in the pre-game.

So I started playing The White Island now. Also a let down as of yet. I am a consol gamer and easily get caught up in the game but as far as these ARGs go, I cant seem to do the same. I think it might be because a lot of the puzzles I need to solve have already been compleated and I cant solve them on my own.

There is also the fact that I cant just jump in and start playing. When I first went to the website for Dharma Wants You I created an account and started playing with the puzzles. It was fun to play I suppose but I felt like it was a waste of time really because I didnt know what I was really doing it for. At least in a Consol game I feel like whenever I do something in the game it will lead me to a new part of the story. But when I play these ARG's I thought "Wait a minute... Even if I do play this puzzle and even if I get Emailed the story will go on with or without me..." and that just doesnt appeal to me.

When I went to the site for The White Island I had no idea what I was suppose to do really. I logged in and played around for a bit but in the end I had to go look around to figure out exactly what I was suppose to do. And I felt like I was missing parts of the story or that I wasnt really involved on a personal level. I dont mean to bash anybody for playing ARG's, I just want to know what makes you want to play them? What is it that pulls you to playing ARG's?

What pulls me and keeps me interested is the interaction with the characters, and the story. Seems like what you played (Dharma) had NO story.

Ever read a good novel and wanted to talk to a character in the book - ask them why they did something, or tell them where to go and what to do?

Nothing beats the thrill of talking with a character and having some effect on the outcome of the story. Being a part of the story is that immersion that ARGs can offer.

Part of the problem with The White Island might be that the game ended over a month ago. Although ARGs aren't necessarily time sensitive, the experience you get from trying to look at the artifacts from after the game isn't really the same.

Admittedly, some ARGs (although relatively few) are designed to allow for easy replay value. I don't remember hearing the White Island was one of those.

For me the most important part of ARG is also communicating with characters. I "played" with Dharma too, although, even if they wanted to make it an ARG, but they collapsed due financial crisis or perhaps something else.

Anyway, my very first ARG, (Cloverfield) was very intensive and really great experience: the interaction with characters was really great, and the atmosphere was also deep and rich. Since this time I was looking for ARGs with this character-communication-bonus, and also such, where you are not only passive observer, but also active member of the happenings.

My perhaps most intensive moment was Conspiration08, as I cheated with a Japanese office lady, who was eliminated by the bad guys while of cheating with me. And I tried to help her, as I could... I mean, at this moment I understood, good ARG is not only passive consume of textes or videos.

From that time I try to participate on every ARG, if I get an "ingame" email, trail package or something like personally accosting me.

Teehee.

But... Yeah. Con08 was great because the character interaction was superb. It was really easy to hate the bad guys, and really easy to be friends with the good guys. They felt like real people, and not just plot devices trying to push the story along.

I mean, honestly, any ARG where I can argue with a character about Pokemon is a win in my book XD
