I got the same message that Fishjp received. I guess that it's a good thing I didn't submit my $25 'earnest' money for the page.

[EDIT] On second thought, I am really curious to what 'Raul' has. I think I shoot off another email and see if I can't get this guy to give up the goods. He might be unscrupulous, but I'll just have to deal with it.

We could try to organize a drop with DC players. He said he'd do a hand-off locally, right?

I received a response from Rachel yesterday. It's been a long weekend for me so I'm sorry for not checking my email. I have not received any reply from 'Raul.

Rachel wrote:
I hesitate to accept help from a stranger, but thank you for the offer, I appreciate it more than you will know. However, I can only give you my prior warning, steer clear of this fellow.

Please let the investigators do their job they are, after all, paid for their efforts. I will take you up on your kind offer, if indeed my solicitor's proxies cannot help.

The link sends you to another part of the verizon site with a 'invisible' link at the bottom. I don't have time to work on the password right now.

Harriman's Remains Found

Kandur, West Djahar - A European mountain climber on holiday, has found the remains of Dr. Richard Hariman. Papa Rastapopoulos found what at first appeared to be a bundle of clothes at the bottom of an un-climbable cliff.

The remains were examined by a qualified physician, Dr. Lamar, who found that Harriman's death was caused by the injuries he sustained falling down the cliff, but he couldn't rule out murder or suicide on the basis of his examination.

In a short statement, Dr. Lamar, explained that he couldn't be more specific. However, he said that death had occurred many months before because the body was partially decomposed.

The contents of his stomach were also examined to find out what he had been eating just before his death. It was found that his stomach contained no meat, just nuts (of a species not currently known), greens and fruit (of the usual sort).

He appeared to be well-fed and in good health before his death. A government official stated, "We continue to follow all relevant leads. This new development is interesting. Other than that, I have no comment to make at this time."

If we are to take Rachel at her word, I get the feeling this is more of a set, linear story and that we won't have much to do but watch as they introduce more expedition members/suspects and the story progresses, on rails.
Otherwise, I don't see any real reason for the password boxes. What would Rachel need to hide? This assumes, of course, that she is the person behind the main site.

Little bump.

Got an email from J.P. Murdock and Sons (john.murdockSPLATrocketmail.com)

To apply: just fill out the form on the Yahoo link, we will of course change it back in a day or so. Complete discretion and your privacy will be respected. All we're asking is for you to think about it.

Filled out the form and submitted (Does everyone get the "M-125 Fialka" message when they mouse-over the submit button?), but got a proxy error on the submission:
Quote:
Proxy Error

The proxy server received an invalid response from an upstream server.
The proxy server could not handle the request POST /guest/control.guest.

Reason: Error reading from remote server

As I've never done more than casually look at the site, I'll have to assume that it's tied to the page linked to on:
http://mysite.verizon.net/vzer3sd8/murcheson2.html where I did enter a comment/email.

ETA: Resubmitting now gives an HTML Gears verification error:
Quote:
Verification failed.

The characters you entered did not match the eight largest ones in the graphic. Please try again.

Press the "Back" button on your browser to return to the previous page.

The code is entered correctly.
Starting over produces the same results.
ETA2: I did get an email reply:

Thanks for your application. We'll be in touch (via YahooIM) soon for your follow-up.

Hope it's not just a GAIM.
Googling for "Murcheson Expedition" gives us another (curious) site that may play a role at a later time.

ETA3:
Anybody live in Illinois?
John Murdock hit me up on gmail chat:
Quote:
john.murdock: Well, you've qualified for the second round! An impressive list of qualifications.
me: Funny the skills one collects over a career.
john.murdock: well, we'll test to see how good you are. once you get the package send it to this address:
me: Sorry about the multiple posts, but there was an issue with the 'jpmurdock" variable in the submission.
john.murdock: hmmm...no prob
me: Can I ask how you came to contact me?
john.murdock: Occupant 720 S 29th St. [City redacted in case it's a player's address]
because you filled out our application (in triplicate, lol)
me: Not meaning to differ... But:

me: Are you by any chance associated with the following site:? http://murchesondiscussion.wordpress.com/
I only ask as I recently posted there and the format of the comments area is very similar.
john.murdock: oh. yeah, you were one of the people we asked to apply.
me: I'm sorry... I misspoke. The page I was referencing was available from: http://mysite.verizon.net/vzer3sd8/murcheson2.html
john.murdock: thanks, btw. you have an impressive array of talents. so, r u going to perform the final test that we asked of you?
john.murdock: we handle the murcheson account but i (for obvious reasons) can't tell you about that account. at least not until you join our firm.
me: Will I be trafficking in any illegal items?
john.murdock: not for this test...you're not an employee yet! but no we save the less legal errands for our seasoned reps.
me: Then you may use me as you wish.
john.murdock: excellent. when you get the package, what are u supposed to do with it?
me: I will forward it to:
720 S 29th St. [City redacted in case it's a player's address]
"Occupant"
john.murdock: very good. you were listening (reading). there's one catch, you cannot, repeat, cannot open the seal. you have our assurance that there's nothing illegal with this - we just sending (via you, to keep deniability) a copy of a journal. you won't be asked to send to that address a second time. understood?
me: Understood.
john.murdock: ok. i'll send it.

journal page

I received the page of the journal from jp murdock via "air mail" although it came from arlington va, but no additional information except the name of the notary public who notarized it. I assume that the name is OOG.

In all my time here, I've never seen any IG notarized documents. We know it means nothing as it's just a witnessing of a signature, but the concept of notarizing a piece of fiction does add a certain Je ne sais quoi.

next?

not sure what to do with the "original page". I received it from JP Murdoch who was acting as Rachel Murcheson's agent. I guess I could see if Raul wants it...

I am still confused about the unicode symbols, is there any sort of translation program to make that usable?

Received and forwarded the correspondence. No Sender name. Just a DC address. Nothing special about the envelope (blacklight, etc.).
I did "xray" it, though. It's the first 8 pages of the Harriman Journal.

If anyone felt compelled to transcribe the pdfs, there's a place for them on the discussion site, now.
Harriman's Journal. Don't say where you got it, though as I'm still "proving my worth".

look at the titles of the books that harriman wrote for a clue to the password that's required on the pwd page.

No idea what that's supposed to mean, yet

ETA: The plant that appears in the existing (March 15, 1934) transcription appears to be Beaked Hazelnut
