Music Lyrics and ARG's

Would there be an legal repercussions if in a ARG the puppet master used a Song to give out clues?

Depends on what rights there are on the song, and how you're using it.

For an extreme example, modifying the mp3 tags in, say, a CD-quality version of Enter Sandman is likely to get you in trouble. Mainly because the song is copyrighted, and you don't have a leg to stand on if you wanted to say it was fair use.

However, there are lots of people who write songs released under Creative Commons these days, so using one of their songs is okay. Throwing them a link to its use and explaining your game isn't necessary, but I'm sure a lot of them would get a kick out of it.

I am not a lawyer and all that jazz ... but I can think of a number of ways to do this that wouldn't create legal problems. A few examples might be:

1. Buy a CD that includes that song, circle the track in question on the packaging, leave it as a dead-drop.

2. Do a puzzle that involves the AISN number (such as B001H1OV8S) and a track number (such as #3).

3. Drop an allusion to the lyrics, for example the phrase "You're my life support, your life is my sport" leads effectively to the same thing as #2

The nice thing about ARGs is there is ALWAYS more than one way to skin a cat.

When a project I was working on needed to drop clues about a song, we used guitar chord progressions. Just sayin'.
