Subject Is Non Existent A l33t ARG? Just got this email today from simulacrum419 @ gmail.com, aka @#%@f23g sg432gs.
It read:

I wrote back, saying,

Are you in the is2land of Alc3atrasz?
Can you give me more information?
There was also an image attached, which I'm including now. The drawng style looks somewhat familiar but I can't place it.
I'm really bad at reading l33t, so if anyone could translate that name-- "@#%@f23g sg432gs", that'd be handy. If, indeed, it does translate to anything.
Description
It looks like it says "San Fransisco" on the side.

Well the heading, isn't exactly 1337 and doesn't translate to anything IMO... But if we're going by mis-spellings and whatnot you've got additional to the email 2223s and the words Water Tower Island Alcatraz; although they left out the o in tower.
I tried destegging the pic using 2223s and other variations of the email, but to no avail.

well the hex "bubbles" contain these numbers: 363819
then seperate is: 02
that is definitely San Franciso. That type of lettering is used heavily where I live. I can't read the artist's sig. I can't magnify it enough...anyone else?
Elite: was there a substitution or did you retype the original message? Where the numbers are, there is no letter sub except in the word
tower....might also be pm mis type (forgot to spell whole word with 2 still in it)
OMG...they're GoDSEEDS!(no not really but heart looks like fennel representation)

Could those be described as Simulacrum Sentries? (From D&D mythos).
FYI: There's also a Mare Island not far from Alcatraz (20 miles, by boat.).

im pretty good a 1337. it doesnt look like the name translates to anything. There are alot of different forms of leet, some more abstract then others.
The artist who drew that looks to be really cool. It looks like something from a comic book to me.

moved post I am in Sacramento and I know there are quite a few ARGers in SF. So if we want to start a trailhead we can get moving on this. Looks interesting enough.
It does not look like the bottom of the water tower is very accessible.

Ok, I used a reverse image search engine on the attached picture. I only got a couple of hits out of over a billion images searched. Neither one of the results has anything to do with the email though, at least I don't think so. The image itself was originally a cover for an Italian "comic book" of anthologies & "poetry graphics" called Libro Piccolo Di Bugie or Little Book Of Lies. Here's the link to the original image; http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_hKTHeIF3YE4/R940IAYtqKI/AAAAAAAAAJU/9sdRl7MXWzE/s1600-h/COP_Libro_Bugie.jpg
The original text has been removed and you can see that the words San Francisco & the hexes with the numbers have been added, as well as the eyes of the figures being changed.
Other than that I don't really have any info on the numbers or anything else, sorry.

Couple questions...
-What is a reverse image search?
-Did anyone else get this email?
I found the blog of the guy who drew the Little Book of Lies. It's in Italian. I translated the page using Google Translate. It's actually surprisingly well translated.

It's called Tineye and as the description on the login page says; "TinEye (is) a reverse image search engine. You can submit an image to TinEye to find out where it came from, how it is being used, if modified versions of the image exist, or to find higher resolution versions. Here's the link; http://tineye.com/login .
Yeah, the artist who drew the image is Hannes from the Gasteropodica site.
I didn't get the email but I thought I'd jump in if I had something to contribute....

it's me, the author of this thing... Hi there guys!
I'm the guy who did that picture... interesting how things get a life ot their own in the web...
Not that I really find it bothersome that somebody takes my work and does something with it (I even had some works distributed as an open document, with a creative commons licence)... I'm just curious. And right now I'm just wondering what this is all about, is somebody spamming people using a modified version of my cover illustration?
cheers!
Hannes

Wow, that's cool, Hannes! Thanx for visiting us here.
Now I'm really interested to know, what's going on with that email.
