Help me in our quest to become Hockeyville 2009

I'm not the type to plead and beg too often, but when the cause is a good one, I'll do what I can. Here's a cross-post from my blog:

Quote:
For the past few years, the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation (CBC) has been running a nation-wide contest called Hockeyville. The premise is that one community in Canada will be chosen the most passionate hockey community in Canada, and in turn, the town will get to host a pre-season NHL game and receive $100,000 in arena upgrades.

This year, our town is celebrating the 60th year of the La Broquerie Habs. The Habs have lasted through two arena fires and many amazing years of hockey. Through the efforts of the community, La Broquerie is in the top ten for the Hockeyville 2009 finals. This means we have a one-in-ten shot at the top prize, and a one-in-two shot at the top five. Even getting into the top five would be amazing, as we would receive $25,000 in arena upgrades and Hockey Night in Canada would come here for a night to do some coverage of our community.

For all of my friends out there, I ask you to please help us out by going to the Hockeyville 2009 web site and voting for La Broquerie. We need to amass as many votes as we can if we want to move into the top five, and voting ends on Sunday. Please, please, please, go and vote as many times as you can for our community. We really, really would be so grateful if we placed in the top five.

Thank you, my friends. Go Habs!

I thank each and every one of you who reads this and decides to head over to the web site to vote once, twice, or more. You know that I love this community and I couldn't be asking a better group of people for help in this situation.

I voted about 20 times. I plan to vote more. Two questions:

1. Why two fires at the arena?

2. What does "Habs" mean?

Answers:

(1) Two arenas have burned to the ground in the past 60 years, and each time the town's citizens stepped up to build a new one. The first arena, built in 1953, caught fire as it was being demolished in 1966. The second arena, built in 1967, was razed by fire in 1977. The third arena is the one the community calls hockey home to this day.

(2) It's short for habitants, which is French for 'inhabitant' or 'settler'.

If anyone is interested in seeing the videos from January 3rd, when the town participated in a day-long hockey day, you can see them at http://www.habsworld.ca/media.html.

OK I voted about 50 times total. All we have to do to get to the final five is to beat the town of Terrace BC. I hope jamesi's town gets that far at least. Vote everyone, it only takes a minute.

Is there somewhere to view the results, or will we just have to wait until voting's over?

Anyway, I just spent pretty much the entire netcast voting and revoting.

Voting!

So, if La Broquerie wins, I'm assuming we are all invited to the celebrations? Razz

Thanks everyone! Online voting ends tomorrow, and we're hoping to get the results on Monday. I'm really hopeful that we can make it to top 5, and then the sky is the limit from there.

And yes, you're all invited to La Broquerie if we win the top prize. Smile

So yeah, we might not know if we're in the top five until February 21st. Until we hear the town Terrace, BC or La Broquerie, MB, it's still up in the air. I will keep you all updated though!

If we don't beat Terrace this year, sign me up to help with next year.

Go Habs!

Well, it was just announced on Hockey Night in Canada that Terrace won, 383k votes to 334k from our side. It's a shame, but it was great to see the town join together for a common cause.

Thanks to all my UF friends who took the time to throw a few votes our way.
