I was at the first Madison location... we scouted out several pay phones in the general vicinity, but only one was located outdoors. There was no ring at the time, and prior testing indicated that the phone WOULD ring if someone called it. I am going back out to the second madison location in about 30 minutes... there are two phones there but they're pretty close to each other.

The man who answered the call claimed the recording played was the same as described elsewhere: She's got a damaged harddrive, she needs you to tell you her nickname:

He said "Melissa [pause] Melissa [pause] Operator" and hung up after about 3-5 more seconds. Apparently he was disconnected.

He did not indicate if there was a trailing message.

Our Axon is not hot as of the time of this message. However, Our_Hoodlums was activated by other bees.

I answered that call. I was asked for her nickname and replied with Melissa. I waited a couple of seconds and said melissa again and then said operator. Nothing doing... The location was very noisy and I wasn't able to hear too well. The ambiant noise might have effected the phone call.

I was at site 35.074196 -089.919320 (Memphis Tennessee).

I met up with some people from XBOXCONNECT and XGAMEFUSION.COM (both are putting up pictures at their sites)
at around 9:30am (our time to be there was 9:51am). There was no phone in our area (but we stayed anyway and hoped........to no avail) so nothing happened at out coordinates Sad .

It was nice to meet others there though, so even if your area is a dud, like ours, you may meet some gamers like yourself and that will make it worth it anyway.

well the santa monica ca one was a bust. the phone rang to a crowd of about 15, but some huge guy from gold's gym burst in, grabbed the phone, looked befuddled for about 3 minutes, then hoplessly said "they're asking trivia?!" needless to say, we went cold.

Rolling Eyes

cool none the less.

Well, I missed the 08:47PDT call to Raleigh, NC by about 8 minutes. Surprisingly the pay phone near that corner was still ringing when I got to it, and the brief recording I heard sounded in-game but relatively unintelligible. It ended roughly 5 seconds after I picked up the phone and then disconnected. I plan to hit it tomorrow, hopefully on time.

Whoever said they were planning to hit the 13:23PDT call in Raleigh, I stopped off at the location after this attempt. If you haven't been there, the coordinates are directly in front of the North Carolina Museum of History. The only pay phone that I could locate in that vicinity was inside the museum, to the left of the information desk in the alcove for the bathrooms. I planned to go and still do, but it depends on work. Good luck.

Well, a number of us were at the location...at least, we think we were at the right phone, no GPS unit amongst us. However, between the lot of us, we had the phones in the surrounding area staked out.

Nothing happened.

No ring, no call, nuthin. Sad

So, one of the guys is going to buy a GPS for the one this afternoon. Sadly, I won't be able to hit that or try again tomorrow, I had to take off work just for this one.

For all those who have hit their locations and gotten a call, good work! For those still waiting, luck to you!

Keep it up folks.

Cleveland coordinate #2: failed

Here's my story of the 12:56pm call, downtown Cleveland, East 9th street.

12:15pm: I leave work. I'm 15 minutes away. Plenty of time - but I want to swing by Radio Shack and buy a phone recorder.

12:22pm: Stop by Radio Shack. Ask for phone recording supplies. The lazy help staff listlessly points toward the phone stuff, and I find a phone pickup right away. Then I ask for a cassette recorder. Help staff looks annoyed, and points me over the MP3 recorders. Good enough.

12:28pm: I'm waiting at the cash register with $60 of stuff.

12:33pm: I'm still waiting. One employee is chatting with a friend. Another is tied up chatting with a customer over a dinky $0.50 cable.

12:36pm: Crap! it's getting close. I'm at about East 75th, and I need to be at East 9th.

I ditch the stuff, hop in the car, and speed off.

12:40pm: Stuck behind a bus. Guy in a wheelchair boarding... ssslllooowwwlllyyy. And thanks to construction, it's a one-lane street. Light turns green... and red... and green... and red... and green, and the bus drives away.

Hit the gas. Turn right, onto East 30th. Fly down to the next street. Turn left.

12:47pm: Get caught behind three consecutive people just sitting in the right lane, dropping people off. Crap - not gonna make it, not gonna make it, not gonna -

12:52pm: Turn right onto East 9th. Wait through two more lights. Drive past the pay phone - hey! Someone's very obviously waiting by the phone!

12:54pm: Park (illegally,) hop out, and walk back to the phone. Arrive at 12:55pm for a 12:56pm call. Wow, that was too close.

So it's me, and MrFrustration who has just shown up - I recognize him from the first coord this morning. And... Other Kid. Dunno who he is - he was waiting by the phone first - didn't introduce himself. Young, blue T-shirt.

We all say hello, glance at our wat-

Ring!

We all look at each other. Having taken the first Cleveland call (and arrived last here), I shrug and defer. Doesn't matter who does it - as long as one of us triggers the axon.

Other Kid picks it up.

"Hello?" he says.

MrFrustration and I look at each other. Oh, crap. Does he not know what to do?

Other Kid listens quizzically to the phone for a few seconds, then looks at us, puzzled. "I can barely hear anything," he says.

"Say OPERATOR," I say.

"Operator," he says. Pause.

"Say PEE CUE EYE," says MrFrustration.

"PQI," he says. Pause.

Pause.

"Operator PQI," he says again.

Crap.

"What now?" he says.

"What do you hear?"

He listens again. "I can barely hear anything!"

He hands over the phone, and I hear a blast of cracklecracklecracklecrackle. Loud static in the earpiece. But underneath it, I can just barely hear: "I love BEES! I love BEES!"

Crap, that's a failure. I hand the phone to MrFrustration, who confirms.

*sigh*

Oh well, it was a fun trip. Maybe we get to make it again tomorrow...

9:29 a.m. NE Kansas City location. Parasites group.

Seven of us met up at the GPS location which ended being an empty lot. We found three pay phones in the vicinity. We covered each phone and left two people at the field in case someone showed up.

The first phone was in an exposition center southeast of the location. Three of our group went there. The second and third phones were in the lobbies of two hotels north of the GPS coords.

I went to the northernmost hotel, made sure the phone could receive incoming calls and waited. At approximately 9:24 a.m. Pacific, a man went over to the pay phone and made a local call. He hung up at approximately 9:28 or 9:29 a.m. The phone rang about 5 seconds after he hung up.

The voice on line was clearly a recording, but it was hard to understand. Lots of ambient noise on the recording. As per the other calls it asked for its name. I answered "Operator." It went on and played the .wav file but it was garbled and hard to understand. At the end of the .wav file the voice explained something about damaged hardware and asked if I wanted to "Repeat or continue." I answered "continue" and received the "I love bees" crap.

I reported what I had done to the other guys. I was quite sure I screwed it up but one of the guys with Web access on his phone said our axon was hot. The other group that went to the southern phone also confirmed our axon was hot with someone over the phone.

I'm not sure the guy who made the phone call right before the ILB call had anything to do with ILB, but I thought I should include it anyways.

There were no payphones in the immediate vicinity of the Spencer, WV location (38.799738 -081.348157). Since it was in the middle of nowhere, early this morning (before the details hit the net) we had no idea what to expect (we weren't looking for a payphone specifically). If we did get it, we wouldn't had a clue as to what to say.

Anyway, it was a wasted trip for me.

Dallas: Mesquite and Garland

Mesquite: 9:47 PDT
There were about 7-8 of us at the Mesquite Axon. A girl there answered the phone. According to her, the voice at the other end never asked for a nickname or password of anysort. It played the first part of the message about the ship being crashed and that's all she remembered. No one had any recording devices. I had my GPS, but I couldn't change the display to decimal mode so I could not get an excact reading on our location. This was a set of Verizon Payphones outside a 7-11 store.

Garland: 10:50 PDT
13 people showed including myself and xgamefusion(who took some pictures BTW). One guy brought a PDA to record with, but for whatever reason when he hit the record button it never started recording. I answered the Garland call. Like the other reports, it was a female voice that spoke of her ship being wrecked and that she was in need of help. She said that she want to tell me more, but that she wasn't sure if I was who I though she was. So, she asked me what her nickname was(at least I think she said "my nickname" and not "your nickname") so I responed very clearly, "operator". "Good." she said, and then it went into the "Guilty" wav file which I heard again 20 later when I got home and went to ILB. After that it clicked and that was the end of it. I tried saying the keyword, but nothing else happened.

[SPEC] hopefully at the end of this day, we'll be able to piece all these clips together figure out what this story is suppose to tell us.

I scouted the location the day before with a friend, got some guy freaked out with my GPS / PDA / Camera combo... he seemed to think I was scoping the place for a terrorist attack or something. =) This morning, while all of us were hanging around waiting for the phone to ring, we had cops watching us on the corner.

A bunch of our group was from GameFAQs or something, one guy from SomethingAweful... would have been great to hang out and meet some of you all, but nobody seemed to have time or motivation to go get some lunch after we failed to get the call.

There were so many phones to cover. I'm certain the ones we were guarding were working, we'd tested each by calling them last night. Some volunteers will be back tomorrow to get some of the phones we couldn't reach (inside the subway station) and one that was busy (cop talking on the phone straight through the critical time).

Dang!

Well, if they do repeat every day, like we were told they would, maybe I can visit again on the weekend?

Good luck on the last few points...

Second Report From Madison

The second location in Madison (11:29 PDT) was a complete sucess! The phone rang and I answered it. Melissa asked her my nickname, and didn't ask for the passphrase (which was tuna). Some people had a laptop and a mic and they recorded the entire thing, which they'll clean up, amplify, and post later on today (I hope).

Like drauh, I was at the Ann Arbor, MI location. However, I have an audio of the way we (the HUGE group that gathered) messed it up. BTW, Lemures is the one who was on the phone, and given the responsibility of giving the password, but the area was a noisy intersection, so that explains the foul up.

Anyway, here's the location of the file: http://www.drakenul.com/beefail.wav
