This is my first post, been lurking for a while, figured it was time to step up!

Spoiler (Rollover to View):

Wow I would have never put that together, I guess I don't know as much sci-fi as I thought.

Wow, quick work, impressive.
One slight change to the sci-fi list.

Spoiler (Rollover to View):
PERSEPHONE-Firefly/Serenity

The rest of the list are planets. Persephone is a planet in the Firefly universe, as opposed to the Matrix character.

I've got some more digging to do, but I think I see a theme among the list as well.

Wha-ha-ha!

My suspicion is pretty much confirmed.

Spoiler (Rollover to View):
The references after the names of the planets have to do with their condition in each book/movie.

Persephone is a planet where a great deal of cargo is traded, it's also a colony of Old Earth, now its 21% full or has 21% of its space left.
Abydos is a desert planet, hence the .3% humidity.
Magrathea is a planet where custom-built planets are made, so the current planet is .0002% complete.
Kashyyyk is the wookiee (Chewbacca!) planet. It's had its ups and downs with the empire and wookiee slavery.

I can't account for Pern or Arrakis as I haven't read the books.

I think I'm onto something with the quotes, as well. I'll keep ya'll posted.

And, of course, "stars" is from 2001.

So, we've got:

Persephone - Matrix or Firefly
Abydos - Stargate
Pern - Dragonriders
Magrathea - Hitchhiker's Guide
Arrakis - Dune
Kashyyyk - Star Wars
Quote - 2001: A Space Odyssey

From earlier:
Hack The Planet - Hackers

Spoiler (Rollover to View):
Each location served by a stargate has its own unique "address", which is a combination of seven or more non-repeating symbols appearing on the dialing stargate. By "dialing" these symbols in the correct order, the traveler selects a destination.

The show is consistent with the mechanics of address-dialing. The process involves associating a unique symbol of the inner ring to each of at least the first seven of the chevrons on the outer circumference. The main "address" is invariably dialed first, and the last symbol is the "point of origin" " representing the gate being used, which acts as the final trigger for the completion of the address sequence. As each symbol is dialed, the chevron is said to "engage" or "encode" and usually responds by lighting up or moving. When the final symbol of an address is dialed, that chevron is said to "lock" and the wormhole opens (this terminology is arbitrary and often interchangeable, but preferred by the recurring character Walter Harriman). If the address is incorrect or does not correspond to an existing or otherwise functional stargate, the last chevron will not lock, and all of the chevrons will disengage.

soooooo all seems to point to planet relatedm outerspaceish maybe?

"ANOTHER WARRIOR IS ON THE MESA"
"ON THE OTHER SIDE OF THE SCREEN, IT ALL LOOKS SO EASY."
= TRON

"I wonder where I'll go now. The net is vast and infinite."
"Your effort to remain what you are is what limits you."
= Ghost in the Shell

"THERE IS NO RIGHT AND WRONG. THERE'S ONLY FUN AND BORING."
= Hackers

"MY GOD, IT'S FULL OF STARS... "
=2001: A Space Odyssey

So yeah, It's all SF movies. Putting The 2001 with the "PERN - ALL TRANSPORT PIPELINES..." made me think of wormholes / Stargate stuff too. (The monolith orbiting Jupiter is called a Star Gate, too.) Caseys_Mom probably had all of this first, but... And 'Welcome aboard!" to FractalGod. Post early, post often.

Spoiler (Rollover to View):
I'm sort of wondering how much of this is the PM pushing back at some of our early, blue-sky spec...

I haven't yet, though it's certainly on my reading list. Embarassed Now I just need to find the time...

Thanks for posting the quote sources, I had to go out this evening and that was my next thing to do when I got back.

Fun fact: the second Ghost in the Shell quote you listed is spoken by a character called the Puppet Master. Shocked How appropriate!

So the quotes are almost all from hackers/hacker-related movies, with the exception of the 2001:A Space Odyssey quote, which is more straight sci-fi than hacking (unless you count Dave deactivating HAL).

One of these things is not like the other. One of these things just doesn't belong. The stars reference jumps out, plus references to 6 extrasolar planets.

We've got a company called Deceptech that's up front about their defense technology--which leads one to ask, "What are they being deceptive about?" Alien technology? Space travel?

...And we're still a week and a half from official kick-off. It's almost like the PM's giving us fodder to break the 47-page record.

And pancito:
Spoiler (Rollover to View):
I have to agree, especially after the Rick Roll, how much of this can be taken seriously, and what's just another goose chase.

UPDATE: I was just looking at the countdown and noticed that the time left didn't mesh with our original findings. Refreshing a few times reveals that the days are now variable, between around 8 days, 20 hours and 11 days, 20 hours, putting 0:00:00:00 between Jan 31 and Feb 3.

Something's fishy about it. Why put a countdown that doesn't have a specific end time, or even day now?
