@YourGuide, I know you're new here. So, welcome! If you stick around long enough, you'll find out just how wonderful of a community UnFiction is. We're always up for helping each other out, a lot of times, even in real world/non-game situations. We make real friends here whether on or off-line.

So like cyphertext said, it would be great if you could move past your perceived loss and find a sense of companionship here.

And I know that this particular game drew a lot more non-uFers into it, since shouting "FREE MONEY" is always a good way to draw people out of the woodwork. So to all the newcommers, money isn't what this is supposed to be about. For uF, it's about the game and about having fun. A lot of us would have been out in that snow and rain if it were just little slips of clue covered paper in the locks. (Actually there's a likelyhood that we would have called up every son of our third-cousin's so-so friend from highschool, if we thought that we could get our hands on the next piece of an in-game puzzle.)

So, if you really think about it, yeah the top monetary amount given out here was about $500, which is indeed real nice to help some payments if you need it. But it's not a huge amount and in day to day life will actually go quite quickly. However, if you make a really good friend here, the next time your company downsizes and you're about to lose your house because there aren't any jobs out there to find...the money will be long gone, but the good friends may just rally together and save your sorry butt. Cool
[/rant]

I am new here but understand that my very first post on this board stated I was going to the NY drop and wanted to meet up with anyone who wanted to go. I didnt have to, but to show that I wanted to be a member of this community I reached out to the board and did the right thing.

Why would I want a sense of companionship with members of a board not interested in the same thing? The moment cybertext returned to his house he posted here, I feel pretty confident he would have been here yesterday morning as well as the evening prior to look for updates, just like I was. It was very convenient that he just "didnt see my posts", and very convenient he didnt hear me yelling to him when he was 10 feet away.

The point is not perceived loss, the point is members of this board defending another new member that had zero interest in showing that sense of community and has been downright rude about it (so sue me. I won the money, end of story) and not in the spirit of the game or the community although I went out of my way to show that I was very interested in being part of this. That aside, I was on site, I know exactly what happened.

I was indeed excited about this community, again even though no one claimed the NY drop in the threads (even though cybertext knew he was also going for it and didnt post here), I still posted saying hey I am going, PM me if you want to meet up.

Can you explain to me why I am wrong here and he is not? I think based on my first posts and explaining what happened it's pretty clear that of the two of us, which of us was more interested in showing the spirit of the game and community. Just because I am new here, it doesnt make a dirty trick any less of a dirty trick.

to the quibblers - whether it's at uf or from elsewhere, this kind of thing happens..especially when it's for pure, free currency.
I (and a number of others) were within 10 minutes of $10,000 for a similar drop a while back for a Dr.Pepper promotion. No sharing there. Groups were searching an area for a single coin worth $10G. Others in the area said they saw a couple guys suspiciously stop looking and walk briskly back to their car and take off. The spot the coin was hidden was literally within my own arms' reach the night before when I was looking. That was $10G. This was much less. Yes, it's frustrating when community doesn't share, but there's no obligation on their part to do so. It's pointless to argue. There are no 'rules', so if someone plays deceptively to get loot, there aint nothin' you can do, and is technically fair game. *shrug*

That said, I still wish there was a drop for STI in Canada Razz bah.
I want to make up for that lost $10G, hehe

The Berlin dead drop got picked up before i was there...I reached it within 30 minutes but it was already gone. I guess noone of the guys who are posting on either the german nor this forum picked it up. I walked around for another 30 minutes to see if i could find anyone close to the sport but no luck. Well since I got the first drop and noone ever showed up there i didn t expect anyone would show up today either but it s fair i guess...since i didn t even have to share the first one! Hope u all had more luck...

This is gonna do nothing to calm this debate, and it will likely rub salt in coglect's wounds but, after Lex so generously split last weeks drop with me, it seemed only fair that I'd split what I'd found with him this week. Sucks that I couldn't give him more but, them's the breaks.

I think that was my point, and I appreciate you having some understanding of why I was frustrated. As a new member, my very first post showed my intention of sharing and being part of the community.

I was really excited as so many other members were indeed sharing as I poured through all the posts on this thread before this drop, I trusted members of this board enough to do the right thing before I even left my first post. I thought it was really cool.

So yes, no point quibbling, have taken it to PMs but wanted to thank you for being the first poster to actually acknowledge why I would be frustrated and upset. I genuinely appreciate it.

YourGuide,

Unfortunately there aren't rules of ettiquette in regards to ARG's. Some players are kind and like to share the experience, others aren't. Every game with dead drops draw new people who frequently don't return after the swag-fest is over. I feel bad that you had a bad first experience with ARG's and if you feel we at uF have been cold. If anything, it might be because we have all experienced the same thing.

I can tell you, being a fairly new uF transplant from SHH!, these boards and users are very friendly and I'm sure if you stick around you'll see it for yourself. Also, unlike myself, you live in NY, the dead drop capital of the world! Keep your head up, you'll get another chance, and give the boards a chance and you'll find the community you were looking for.

Sorry again your first experience was bad, but don't let it sour you to ARG's. Those are my two cents, take them or leave them.

Again, I genuinely appreciate the understanding. Genuinely. That's where my frustration came from. The point wasnt the money, the point was I felt a bit burned by someone from this community when I went out of my way to show that I was interested in being part of this community and sharing.

Thanks again.

Ahhh, the Dr.Pepper one... that was fun, although very very frustrating. I made two trips and spent hours searching long after the Atlanta coin was already gone.

Kudos to the PM's for Stop the International on pulling off such a large scale live hunt and doing it right. Sure there were a few glitches (early released numbers and Ashville) but something this big has to be very hard to pull off. The limited time search windows in the middle of the day were a blessing, and the quick updates on the site when a drop had been recovered were very nice. The movie tie-ins were great, and definitely got me excited about going to see the film.

I agree, I'm actually excited to see the film too and I really like all of those mini movies and case files on the site, they did a great job!

I dont hold the sponsor responsible for the experience I had with the guy who beat me to the drop, the promotion was incredibly cool and the site well built. One of the best interactive promotional games I have been involved in playing. It really did make me more excited about the movie because you really felt a part of it.

Sadly, considering no one got to the first drop and no one posted about the second drop I was pretty sure I had a good shot at the cash so I actually wrote a note for agent salinger and put it in a ziploc, sort of a funny counter espionage note saying I had foiled his agents and would be willing to swap him the currency and evidence for perhaps a VW Tiguan hahahahahahaha. It's still in a ziploc in my bag with string stapled to it.

Hey, newbie to ARGs here (I briefly followed but didn't really participate in ILB). I just found out about StopTheInternational yesterday and sadly missed all of the drops (granted the closest one was about 250 miles away in Kansas City). Does this mean that the ARG is "over" until new stuff pops up sometime in the future (if that happens)?

Hiya, and welcome to the boards! Sadly, yeah, I'm pretty sure this ARG is wrapped up. I could be wrong, but other than the VW sweepstakes (which is open to the public) I'm pretty certain there wont be any more dead drops. Keep an eye on this thread because if I'm wrong it will show up here, but I wouldn't expect much.

That being said, there are TONS of other ARG's currently going on that you might want to look into. I can't guarantee that they will all have dead drops, but they are still fun to play which is the real point.

Also, for any Dead Droppers who wanted but were unable to get their locks, I found something you might like:

Dead Drop Locks

My friend who got the lock for me yesterday told me it was a Shurlock lock, so I'm certain it's the same one as the black one pictured here. He also said it wasn't that great a lock as he was able to pry it free with his hands pretty easily, so don't use them to protect anything valuable...Like wads of cash... Laughing
