The studio released a teaser trailer for 2012 that showed a tsunami coming over the Himalayas and interlaced a message about the world's governments not preparing its population for the end of the world. The trailer ended with a message to viewers to "find out the truth" by searching on Google for "2012". The Guardian criticized the marketing approach as "deeply flawed" since the film was not mentioned among the first few search engine results.[13] The studio also launched a viral website published by the Arrow fictional organization Institute for Human Continuity where visitors could register for a lottery number to be part of a small population that would be rescued from global destruction

This website is a disgusting play on peoples emotions and should be absolutely abolished. A movie advertisement should not have the domain of an organization because there are going to be unknowing believers in what this website promotes. Not only does this encourage fear of a doomsday that will never exist, this promotes distrust in our governments, and MOST IMPORTANTLY this is a fake organization that is promising fake protection.

Fuck all of you who designed this ridiculous movie advertisement, fuck the studio for making the film, fuck the people who allowed this website to go up, fuck the person who is reading this, and fuck the writers for being satisfied that this is creating such a stir and controversy.

Wow, language much?
Stating your opinion is fine, but do you have to use such course language?

Ahahahaha, I went to sign onto Myspace today and I saw the banner linking to the website. I KNEW it was too ridiculous to be true!

So I come back to the good ol' UnForums to find out its viral marketing for a disaster movie which is probably going to be lame. Count me out of this one.

Haven't been on here in forever. I was on a rollerblading forum when this came up on it. sounded ARGish so I checked it out. Sure enough, here it is.

Funny how things come full circle.

By "this", do you mean the 2012 website, or unFiction?

Because the 2012 website is for an ARG. If you don't know what that is, I suggest you read http://www.giantmice.com/features/arg-quickstart/.

Brann:

If you look under the terms of service for the IHC website, you'll see that it's copyright under Sony Pictures. The site is basically viral marketing for the upcoming movie, 2012, which you can find on IMDB. There's also a link to the trailer somewhere on the first page.
Don't take it too seriously. Those lottery tickets are IG and won't insure any type of survival lol.

You know, I was going to stick to the 3 other ARGs I'm playing with right now, but after reading this I have to join this one out of principle.

I'm shocked at the number of people who didn't realize this is viral marketing to sell a movie. I mean come on, you're posting on a message board dedicated to virals/ARGS.

Or were gullible enough to not think twice about believing everything anyone ever writes on the internet. Hey guys, I have this bridge for sale if anyone's interested...
