I got to that via good old graph paper and skull sweat. Put down what you know, and start poking at what you don't.

Sorry for the short post earlier, folks. Was at my in-laws and trying to beat the clock to dinner. Does my partial translation confirm the knight's step for the codex?

Just got there myself, was about to mention it. Nice. That one was a lot harder. Wonder what hole this rabbit will lead us down?

There's a link to download a pdf on Eve's myspace page. It's Alice's Adventures In Wonderland. Don't know what we're supposed to use it for exactly, but anyway..... here's a direct link..

Ok, with the new encoded text from TSO, I resolved some of the issues I had in this post originally.

Seems whatever error there was in the encoding might have been there in the first message as well, so, the fix should be applied in that one as well before using the transliterations in the new message.

The fix also resolves one of the problems with my quadrant-based theory. In the first message a clear F would encode to R, but my theory (top-right quadrant letters should be encoded by moving the knight DDL) would have expected F-> Q. The fix is in line with the theory; the universe is in order.

Here's the new text from TSO, with the decoding applied from the first message (plus TSO fix on the Q/R problem):

Code:

PNP OQWW OQNP NWM I OQQI Q2WU IPP XIHI. OPQKP QH I
Eve will give you a gift from the past.       is a

X2PHPVI QW2 IPP QMIM2P. HPP KIV JP QWMVL II
present for the future. she can be found at

UNHXIKP LWI KWU QW2OI2LHWIHP PNPUIVLP2I HPP OQWW ILL
myspace dot com              evemandera she will add

you as a friend if you mention the white rabbit.
 W  IH I Q2QPVL QQ  W  UPVIQWV IPP  PQIP 2IJJQI.
NWM IH I Q2QPVL QQ NWM UPVIQWV IPP OPQIP 2IJJQI

All right, for the things missing I'll apply my theory of the knights move by quadrants, since it fits so far:
top-left quaddrant: RRD
top-right quadrant: DDL
bottom-left quadrant: UUR
bottom-right quadrant: LLU

Still don't know how the codex applies to the decryption. It's still simple substitution with a few discrepancies, is it not?

Well so far all the translation we've done matches the quadrant based idea of the knights moves.

Take the codex image and divide it into 4 quadrants.
To encode a letter or number, use the following knight's moves depending on the quadrant the cleartext is in

top-left quaddrant: RRD
top-right quadrant: DDL
bottom-left quadrant: UUR
bottom-right quadrant: LLU

So, when decoding, instead of looking at all the possible knights move that land in the letter to be decoded ( 8 ), we need to look at only these 4.

Yes, but we figured this out after the fact. Technically, the codex is not needed. right?

Well, without the codex image... would we have thought of placing the alphabet (and digits! there were no digits in the messages!) in a 6x6 table (which lead to spotting the knight's move, and the idea of quadrants) ?

So I think the codex image was a good hint to have. Whether they'll keep using this code or not, I can't tell. EYE told us already He doesn't like to repeat himself.

Not to be argumentative, but that's exactly my point. the 6x6 table, the knight's move, and the quadrants are all moot points as far as solving the cipher. They are not needed in any way. I actually solved the first one without ever looking at the codex.

As well, I cranked the second out on graph paper. Took some sideways thinking, but didn't involve the codex in any way.

About to show just how ignorant of all this computer stuff I really am, but why does Eve want us to have the tagged pdf version? What's the difference other than file size?

I'm thinking she wants us to use the tagged version because it's formatted a certain way. Maybe she'll use the book to pass us information using a beale cipher or something similar.

Just my thoughts. who knows.
