What a novel idea! I don't know if this belongs in this section or not, but if anybody has paid attention to West Unfictionopia. This is a very novel approach at an ARG (if that's what it can be classified as).
So far the approach has been to start a whole new world and let the players run the show. The "emporer" (PM) has pretty much been hands off. As a matter of fact, I believe this game could probably survive with very little intervention from the PM's. Look how much has been done with a minimum of guidance.
I've never seen a game explode like this one has (in my short 18 month history of playing ARG's) in such a short period of time. What is the draw? Why am I hooked?
I don't want this post to seem like a commercial for the game. It's not. I just wanted to know if this approach has been used before? (and give 2 thumbs up to the PM's).

New ideas and implementations are refreshing and make people think about structure. Things like this game are what cause people to start thinking outside of the box more and experimenting.
Sometimes it's nice to see a PM sticking their neck out and trying something new. If we all do the same things over and over again, ARGs will get stagnant, fast.

Crack cocaine.
More seriously, the only thing I can think of is just because it's a huge injoke, and you're in on it. But I think making games that are purely injokes is detrimental to the format, as it makes the community seem exclusive. "You can't play this game, ebcause you don't know what we're on about, neener neener".
I'm not saying this is true. I'm saying it appears that way, which is just as good as true when you're new here.

You're a neener head. Anyway, from what I can tell, players ranking from Boot to Dances with Wikis are all taking part in the "game." Looks as though it appeals to all audiences, for whatever reason. Weird.

This game reminds me alot of the "A Tale in the Desert" MMO.
Let the Inmates run the asylum, and then (from a PM or design perspective) introduce new content periodically to see what they do or how they react.

When the West Unfictionopia thing started, I was totally remembering Seen Steve?, which was the spoofy fun meta ARG that Ehsan made. Good old grumpy brilliant Ehsan.

Isn't this true of any game? What I'm liking here is the anarchy of it. So far it's just a RPG without rules (except 'play nice'). I've even been tempted to do a minor gamejack (if that's what you'd call it) and throw in a murder mystery or something, and I think the format would sustain that. Think of it as CF or RPG with some folks who are interested in having some silly fun. Why is it fun? Because we want it to be. Thank you PM(s) for providing the play space.

I think that is the appeal of this. Rather than "Save the Cheerleader" or whatever other mission a game may have, this one is just "Hey kids try out your new sandbox" (at least so far) A possible murder mystery would work, Euchre is having a blast with his game warden duties and adventures. I am enjoying being Mayor. This is thriving for the reason Pastry Wars did. We are having fun.

That's 'cause I don't have any real creativity... or web sklz.

Yep. Actually reminds me of PW a lot, except completely different. Whatever that means.
