Hello! Thanks for inviting me to the forum wulf. It looks like I have a lot of catching up to do - wow- 25 pgs!
I think u may be right about 1789 not being related to this game... I guess I've read too much into Vampire: The Masquerade (?also white wolf). Sorry if I've confused anyone w/ that. It has been awhile since I've played something like this. I'm still working on that email though. Oh, & by the way I'm a "she". Wink

Welcome aboard, it's always good to have another set of eyes. Definitely enough of a background so far to keep you reading for a few days at least Smile. The only reason I mentioned that I didn't think the 1789 war you found was relevant, was simply because everything so far has been part of a new "story". Really, the only part of VTM canon that has stayed true was the different clans, and some of the characters.

Has anyone else had any luck with the email? For some reason while on the road, I seem to have less time to work this, than when I'm actually sitting in the office. I'm sitting at the airport in Minnesota right now (-18degrees this morning!), waiting to go home. From the little I've looked at the email, it' looks a substitution cipher, but I haven't been able to figure out the key with the few words I've had time to try.

==EDIT==
Damn, looks like we missed a "live chat" in the new blogpost 6. Like what JonahFalcon caught last time. Could it be the email was giving the time of the chat, much like last time?

Hmmm - sorry for the double-post.. again.

New blog is up - "α

@yochanan - did you figure this one out already? Your comment seemed a bit... odd... Laughing I guess. Does that also mean you were able to figure out the email?
Until then, I'm gonna assume not - and dump all my time into it today Very Happy (which probably means I'll end up Bang Head inside of an hour).

==EDIT==
Huh - will wonders never cease..

Nice job with the code. I'm still working on the email too. It's not ciphertext, since its letter frequencies resemble normal english. I've been working under the assumption that it is some sort of transposition cipher, with SARA being the keyword, or in the text (starting with the capital S) or both. But nothing I've tried has gotten me there. I think that there must be a pattern of some sort, because there are too many letters to just randomly anagram. I emailed shrecknet for a hint, and this was the response I got:

Quote:
Porter here. Well, it looks like a scrambled phrase. Funny how Y and S are capitalized. Maybe one starts the sentence and the other is part of a proper noun...

Porter

That didn't really help, because that's what I've been trying, but at least it confirms the hypothesis. I don't think I'll have time to work on it today. Good luck!

I was looking at a lot of the same thing - anagram didn't pan out, and found a website that thought it might be a transposition cipher, with the capital Y indicating a name Wink (it was their first guess) - but that obviously wasn't in the right direction. I've run thru several different possible ciphers now, using SARA, and other's with no luck. I've started working with a columnar transposition cipher, but that's going to take a bit of time.
But at least Porters email narrows it down a bit - so S=Swift and Y=You? First thought, but no "w" in the email.

Back to it.

been away for awhile...

about the email code, you think the prime numbers clue in the latest post will help? Noticed that the letters Y o u for the first word you can get after taking out a number of letters, which are prime...

Not sure if that makes any sort of sense either. Laughing

I'll try and go over it at work tomorrow, should be able to concentrate on it a little better. ^^

Hahahah - I had to chuckle at this. I think the email is simpler than we've been making it out to be. The words are simply scrambled, and based off the number of letters in each "word", we have to figure out what they are. Does that make sense?

ten tYisn toka ra rocafutov talluSauna ra hona.
For example, the first word "ten" - has 3 letters, and since we know "You" is the first word - you remove "You" from the letters in the sentence. Then since we know "Sara" is the last word, remove the letters in Sara's name from what is available. I probably made this a lot more complicated in the explanation.. lol
Quote:

ten t*isn t*ka ra rocaf*tov talluSauna ra hona =
You t*isn t*ka ra rocaf*tov tallu**una ** Sara.

I think if we can figure out what the longest word is - the rest will fall into place.
That's my guess. I'll see what I can come up with at work tomorrow also.. Wink

==EDIT== 3/2/09 3:15am MST
Damn - sucks to lookit the clock and realize you've been up waaay too long.
Been working on that email, I must be doing it wrong, cuz it's really slow going. Rather than try to figure out what the scrambled letters are, I looked for lists of "common" 4 and 5 letter words. Then grabbed the ones that matched the critera (i.e. no 'z' in the word), and then sorted again based on grammar possibilities. Yikes.
Attached is what I've been doing - in case anyone is interested. I'm hoping a fresh set of eyes can get this quicker than I can.

Okay, i think I solved the email code. You were on the right track, Wulf, but I don't think you're gonna like it.

Spoiler (Rollover to View):
"You folks have an unnatural attraction to Sara."

Sounds to me like Porter is messing with you guys for sending so many emails about our girl Sara.

Rolling Eyes

(I could always be wrong, scrambles and anagrams this size have way too many possibilities...)

LOL - that's awesome! I could see that type of humor being used here - but it seems odd that Porter would scramble that. Besides, it'd have to be a strange attraction, considering she's dead..... Twisted Evil
When I was working on the email, I saw the unnatural, and attraction words - but just didn't think it would go that way, so I didn't really consider it.
Even if it isn't the right answer - you just made my day .. Laughing

For laughs, I replied back to the original email with:
Spoiler (Rollover to View):
"Attraction knows no boundaries. No one ever said that it would be looked upon favorably by the masses..."

Heh, and just to emphasize Porter's humor... Got one line from Shrecknet on aim just now:

me: hello, this is NathanHale, available for a few questions?
shrecknet: sorry, dude. It's Miller Time. - Porter

I never thought Nosferatu were big on drinking. Unless the blood is coming from some guy named Miller. *shrug*

Fascinating.

who? posted a comment on "α":
Quote:
The Society has a particular unnatural attraction to the Prince.

So, this poses a few new questions:
1) Are they playing back with us? Keeping it funny?
2) Are they actually implying a connection between the Prince and Sara?
3) Are they doing both? Cuz that'd be pretty cool.

Honestly, I suspect that it's just Porter having a bit more fun with us - as so far the Prince hasn't actually figured into the story, aside from being mentioned. Of course, that could be, simply because we haven't asked about him before..Hmmm..
TINAG .. it's a killer .. Laughing

==EDIT==
Not sure when I got it, but received an email from Netchurch in response to the one I sent earlier, and then I replied back again. Read from the bottom up:
Quote:
Interesting comment. I suppose if I had more information about her I would be able to make my own decision about whether or not it would be unnatural.
Do you suppose dear Doctor, you could at least tell me what it is about her that would make it so?

Wulf

Thank god it's solved! I was getting tired of looking at it. Was there a pattern, or was it just guess and checking based on the length of the words?

Anyone still working on the word puzzle from a few posts back? Three blokes bump, etc.

Heh - I felt the same. I think jslice solved it by simply ferreting out which letter went in which spot. Very time consuming.

I thought you had already solved that "three blokes" bit?
