[CHARLOTTE] Charlotte is becoming real Mysterious package in the mail! Edit: For those joining in, Rowan's written an excellent guide which may be found here: http://www.wonderweasels.org/charlotte/guide.html
We're chatting about the ARG in #therapy, and about the book in #therapyspoilers.
Delivered to my PO box was this mysterious package from San Diego. Inside was a tape recorder wrapped in March 9th's classifieds of the San Diego Union Tribune (I looked, but didn't see anything circled). On the tape is a conversation between a man and a woman - seems to have a therapist/patient vibe to it. The woman is describing how she doesn't write fiction anymore because her stories seemed to come to life, and goes on to talk about a child she wrote about, Charlotte, who became ill and ran away to find the cause of her illness. This seems to affect the man strangely - he's anxious to know how the story ends, but the woman says she doesn't know what happens; she never finished the story, "That's how the nightmare started."
Spooky!
(I've blurred out the street address for privacy at this time, unless we find that we need it.)

I love stories about writers who have characters that come to life and then take over take over the story.
I wonder who sent the tape - the patient, the therapist, or the therapist's secretary?

I was totally going to mention "Stranger Than Fiction" but decided not to. (I liked that movie - it was totally cute, and Emma Thompson does a great tortured writer impression.)

Not yet, that's the next step.

There's something written on the side of the tape with the recording.

Does not appear to be anything recorded on the other side of the tape.

Did you check the classifieds that are highlighted? Anything of significance?

Quote:
Man: What are you working on at the moment?
Woman: I don't write fiction anymore or at least not what most people would see as fiction.
Man: How would you describe it?
W: Well these days I only write about myself. Call it autobiography; it kills three birds with one stone. It allows me to indulge my literary sense (or could be bent or vent)(?) It allows me to come to terms with my past and it rules out the possibility of the fictional characters coming to life and driving me crazy.
M: I see. Then tell me about your most recent breakdown.
W: OK, the last character to come to life was the heroine of a children's book, a modern fairytale.
M; Can you tell me about the plot?
W: It's all about a little girl called Charlotte, a little delicate slip of a thing, with angelic blonde hair, the sort you see on commercials for cookies and chocolate, you know the type.
M: As (not sure what he says here, but maybe) as hallucinations go, I can think of worse.
W: True, Charlotte was a darling, people found her adorable. Her father was a king and they lived in palace on an island.
M: How did the story start?
W: With a quest. One day Charlotte fell seriously ill.
M: What were the symptoms?
W: She lost weight, became frail and sickly she was struck down by all kinds of mysterious infections. One by one the king consulted every doctor in the kingdom, but nobody knew what was wrong with his daughter. It wasn't long before the royal couple were frantic with worry. Meanwhile poor Charlotte was wasting away.
M: What happened to the girl?
W: One day she decided to take charge of her own destiny, she ran away from home.
M: Oh, my God.
W: I beg your pardon?
M: Nnnnothing, I didn't mean to interrupt you. Go on.
W: So Charlotte set off on a quest to find the cause of her illness, I suppose you could call it a parable. A little girl refuses to give up on hope and sets off to the big wide world on her own. Are you sure you're alright?
M: (Long pause) Forgive me, I should stop drinking so much tea. Tell me more about Charlotte. How does the story end? What happened to her?
W: I don't know.
M: Surely you know how your own story ends.
W: I told you before, I never got past the first few chapters, and that's when Charlotte (could be Charley) came after me. That's how the nightmare started.
ETA a couple of words suggested by others. Let me know if anything else sounds off. I was trying to do this while my hubby was asleep on the sofa, so the sound was turned down really low.

Slight nitpick: I hear "...that's why Charley came after me."
It's only significant if Charlotte's motives need to be examined but I thought I'd post the observation anyway.
