Same with the Janesville, WI location -- the phone didn't accept incoming calls. Was surprised to find no less than eight people there, though.

Thank you, aliendial! I messed up the time and missed the 13:26 call at the Ballston metro stop in Arlington VA (only a block from my home)! I tried to find the 14:11 call in D.C., but the phone I waited beside didn't ring. So many thanks as well to whoever picked that call up... was the phone inside the Simthsonian metro? With two failures I was determined, so I went to Georgetown and picked up the 5:23 call (axon hot).

13:26=4:26 in the afternoon, and it was indeed at the metro exit and not the corner of 9th and N. Stuart suggested by the coordinates.

The 5:11 PM one in DC was gotten by kaziel and another guy (I think). Not too far from the subway - in front of the Department of Agriculture building on the Mall - except on the Independence Ave side (there was an earlier one on the Mall side).

Just got back from Louisville, CO (marked Broomfield in the lists). I was there for the first of the Meditape cluster and the last of the Pillow cluster.

The first call (Meditape) was a bust. No call. We (6-7) had (with the help of some of the (more successful) Boulder crew) four of the five phones in a two/three block radius covered. Nothing, bubkis, nada. We verified that the most likely phones took incoming calls and camped out for the next one (exact same co-ordinates).

Between the calls we had an additional 4-5 folks join and we lost a few. We discussed the plotlines and what had been going on to date. We also informed the uninitiated of the Unfiction forums.

The second (Pillow) call was missed due to poor action on our part. We where about to give up on the call (our watches showed the time had passed) when the phone rang. There was a quick call for quiet and to close the door (there was a train going by a block away) and by the time someone had there hand on the phone the ringing stopped. Two stinkin' rings was all we got and we missed it!

A few of us hung out for a bit talking before agreeing that most of us would be back tomorrow to catch Pillow.

also missed the 16:27 pillow, sorry guys. We were at a payphone matching the gps almost exactly at an abandoned gas station. Nothing. Come to find out that the phone in the pizza hut ~300ft away rang and freaked out the girl working the front desk with the whole "I don't know you, etc" message. There were a good 15 of us there, me and a good friend, MadCow, manning the first phone, and we couldn't convince anyone to try waiting at the pizza hut phone. Everyone was just so convinced seeing as it was the lone phone for a long distance and matched the map/coordinates so well.

Apparently if you miss the call there is another following call a little later that is just silence and then *click* they hang up. One of the guys made it to the pizza hut just in time to get this call, and this morning at the 11:53 eyes we got that silent call after a "prank" call asking if "bob" was there probably got in the way of the true "eyes" phone call.

I'll see if I can't manage to be at both of these tomorrow if this actually does continue.

So hung out, got interviewed by a technology reporter from the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel, speculated a bit. Then I had to leave. Exciting stuff, no?

/me waves

So I was late due to traffic, not that it mattered since the phone didn't ring. I took a couple of pictures of the people there. The guy on the right with the notebook is the reporter from the Milwaukee paper. I gave a plug to ARGN and unfiction. He seems pretty psyched about this thing. He told me afterwards that he wants to get the article printed quickly to try and scoop some of the bigger papers. QBKooky was the only other UFer there. The rest were from Halo/xbox forums. One guy was from penny arcade.

"that phone"? which phone? if you're talking about the 11:53 eyes in Boise, ID phone, then I'm sure we'll have plenty of opportunity to hear from others if the phones are ringing again and know whether or not it's worth it to go back. It's ~10min from where I work and I can take my lunch break during that time, so it's not a prob for me to be there if this does continue tomorrow.

Found the first one [17:35] just fine, as can be seen on the links page. However the second one might as well have still been in the Pacific Ocean, since my GPS insisted it was in the middle of a locked church. Some people kind of tried to get in, but to no avail.

No phonebooths in the area, as far as we could find.

I was very relieved to find that the emergency axon went hot without us.

Just came back from the 16:03 "Meditape" location. The position was plotted just inside the Burbank Media Center Mall. About 15 of us covered two sets of phones on the lower level, south side. Nothing happened. Sad There was another set of phones on the upper level, nothing there, either. Couldn't see any other payphones outside the mall. I guess it's possible we could have missed another payphone but it seems unlikely.

There is another possible explanation. At approximately 14:02:30, some lovely person (sorry, Mods) walked up to one of the phones on the 1st floor and picked it up, whereupon the following conversation ensued:

Me: Oh, geez, is there any way I could get you to wait, like, 90 seconds?
Jerk: No.

He then proceeded to turn his back and rummage through his change, all the while keeping the phone on his shoulder and off the hook. Karma's a Censored , though -- whoever it was he was trying to reach didn't answer, so he left at approximately 14:05 without completing his all-important, crucially-time-sensitive phone call. Damage done, however, if that happened to be the phone that Melissa was calling, as appears to have been the case. Mad

(Eight charming and conveniently-placed phones, and he had to pick that one! Cursing )

You were supposed to go to the McDonald's in that block, by the light.

I rolled up, saw that people had covered the hell out of it (down to a camcorder trained six inches from the phone), and drove on, confident that they would be scaring people at the Zoo in an hour.

I was there as well. It wasn't locked, in fact there was a service at 6pm sharp. I was the person that decided to go inside. They didn't have a phone, let alone a payphone. Dud.

Not sure....

Not sure where to post this, but I think it may deserve a new thread. It's time to regroup and try to nail those 7 unlocked wav files tomorrow.

Here is a list of the coordinate groups that have been unlocked, as well as the individual coordinates that still need to be visited.

Let's coordinate visits!

San Francisco reporting in

I am writing this from the Apple store in downtown SF (near the final axon) with Addict and we can now report the following:

This morning Addict covered 8:59 location and, based on my relaying (by phone) the (at the time INcorrect) info that reversed name and nickname, "we failed it" (as they say on Slashdot).

Second location (which I missed by minutes) was amply covered by Addict and many others. Score.

I rolled down to #3 on my big dorky red bike and saw Addict and one "Kelly" (very nice girl) had it covered so then pedaled over to location #4 where there was no one present. Knowing it was a LONG haul to #5, I called Addict and he wisely advised that he would leave Kelly at #3 and taxicab over to #4 and that I should mash on down to #5.

Brutal ride down Market street! When I got there, I met up with Ranger D (posted elsewhere here) and he had it well covered, but as he reported the location was funky and no phones rang. Bummer.

I then jetted over to #6 (the final location) and got there first but Addict, Kelly and several others arrived well before the fateful time. Very nice crowd. I was allowed the honors and (apparently) successfully completed the connection. Wo0t.

As I write this, Addict (on a neighboring Mac) is now reporting to our great pleasure and relief that the final axons (law_abiding and emergency) were indeed nailed.

I was pretty stressed at the final location, but am glad to see that it was critical to completion of the axon.

Its Miller time.

Team San Francisco out.

EDIT (from the comfort of home) to add what I heard once I'd provided the correct name:

Although it was a very loud location and the audio was less than perfect, the "Emergency" axon seemed to play the sounds of some (ship?) that was burning up. Male voices yelled "emergency" as if transmitting for help and I *think* I heard them say something like "sirius 23 is on fire" but cannot say for sure about the sirius 23 part. The gist of it was that it was the dramatic sounds of a crew in a doomed ship which makes sense.

I cannot begin to tell you all how glad I am that SYFer got the last Axon to go hot. We had it well covered but it was nerve racking to think that we might drop the ball on "Emergency". Turns out that the release of the audio file came down SYFer and we were able to activate it.

It was a herculian effort today to get some of the Axons since 3 of the San Francisco locations (16:51, 17:03 and 17:11) were within 20 minutes of each other and widely spaced apart. Seriously, we might not have gotten the 16:51 or the 17:03 unless we were organized like we were. 17:11 was a dud, there was no phone at the coordinates.

Good work today everyone, but lets see what we can do about the missed Axon's tomorrow.
