Berkeley Extreme Team

The Berkeley Extreme Team successfully made all 6 of our axons go hot today. We were SO rock and roll. Rock On

A group of about 8 of us were on foot all day, 8:55 AM to 5:27 PM. At each site another 2 - 5 people would show up, so we saw new faces all day long.

We were staking out multiple phones, running relays, using elaborate hand signals. It was awesome.

One of our phones was INSIDE a building lobby (a library). Be sure to check inside, guys.

Also GPS wasn't always spot-on. We learned our lesson: Be willing to send people to further out phones just in case.

Great to meet everyone today.

alright everyone, I'm expecting to head over to one of the Dizzy locations tommorow

40.757145 -073.987240 is the coords, but I've never really used mapquest or maps.yahoo.com before. so Im bound to get lost ><... which is why I'm going to post Razz

This axon seemed to be generaly ignored, and honestly, theres no guarintee that anything will get done if one decideds to just sit on the sidelines! So I figure it would be best to take it into my own hands... althought it would be a treat if others were there Smile

ANYWAY, back to my location problem! which just happens to be the fact that im completly ignorant Razz. The plan is to get off the train at Penn Station and walk (I dont have a car, i'm 17 xP)

the map I ended up with is this:
ginormous URL here

The Penn Station adress is here: http://www.amtrak.com/stations/nyp.html

and I already gave the Axon coords ^^, for all you Map Savvy people, just want to confirm everything is all good before I venture off into the unknown xP, thanks much in advanced Smile

edited to fix humongoid URL, there - krystyn

For more tales of the Berkeley extreme team, check out my post with the story of the Library here.

Sorry about screwing up the repeat and the recording on the last axon, I couldn't hear a thing with the mike there. As penance, I offer 2 pictures of the team doing what they do best, answering phones.

Congratulations to that crack Berkeley team! With that first-rate recon report provided yesterday by Okota, I should think it was like shooting fish in a barrel (which is not to say that you folks didn't have your act together in a big way in the field too).

And big kudos also to Addict who was the "brains" behind our combined effort today. He points, I pedal. Embarassed

Axons went hot, friends were made and the The Citizens got to puzzle over why 8 geeks holding cell phones were clustered around a grubby pay phone.

I was at the 16:59 (it was me and my group that brought the camera):

I had arrived in the general vicinity around 2:30 PDT, trying to find the non existant phone that would match perfectly around the GPS point. I had not looked at the list of public phones in the area, so it took my about 20 minutes searching around before I found the phone at the McDonalds.

Took a shot of it on the camera for posterity. Then it was about killing time.

Celina arrived around 4:00 and the rest of Team Nuriko and a few others showed up around 4:30.

Phone Rang promptly at 4:59.

Answered the phone with "Connection Established"

"Good, you're there"

conversation went verbatim as the others, where the voice asked for her Nickname. I replied "Operator" once in clearly. Reply took about 3 seconds.

This conversation did not ask for a password, instead used the passcode in the next sentance, which due to cars driving throught the drive through was muddled enough to make it hard for me to hear clearly.

At this point, the voice flipped into Mid sentance talking about how someone had taken a "razorback" and something to the extent that this person would be busted for "deriliction" if he/she did not return.

Again I apologize for the lack of specifics, but ambient noise and the fact that the phone wanted 25 cents made it hard to hear everything.

We did have the camcorder running though, so I will go through it tonight and tomorrow to see if there is anything intelligible on the tape, and post any sound that is worthwile on the board.

My post is going to be a long one. Smile And yes, I'm the guy that AlienDial was talking about. *pokes AD* You didn't mention you were a mod!
Also, yes, I am a Penny Arcader. *From the crowd: boo hiss* *hides in shame*

Anyhoo, I began planning this last night. I used the most up-to-date info available from the netninja/wiki site and entered the lat and long of the first one into Rand McNally, and then got it to give me directions from my apartment to the first loc, and I did a connect the dots by time frame over the course of all 16 locations, and realized one thing: at 12:56, 13:02, 13:11, and 13:14 PDT, those locations all were close to but not close enough to go to all 4 in time. Each location was approximately 1 to 1.5 miles away from the next one, so even at best I couldn't hit them all, but, incedentally, the 12:56, and 13:11 were only a few hundred feet away and the same was for 13:02 and 13:14. So looking at the locations, I decided that I would make tracks for 12:56 and 13:11, and hopefully run into someone else who could cover 13:02 and 13:14 for me. After priting out the grids for all locations, and how to get from one to another, I FINALLY went to bed at 3 AM >.<;

When I woke up at 8:30 AM (blarg, only 5 hours of sleep) I realized there was no chance of me making it down to the Mall in a half an hour on bike (I live about an hour away, on bike, from the first location), so I (mistakenly) convinced myself that others would cover all the calls and I could just chill and maybe head down to Georgetown for the 13:52 PDT (4:53 PM EDT) and 15:32 PDT (6:32 PM EDT) calls. So I just kinda chilled out checking my websites until around 12:00 PM EDT, when I decided to check out the www.ilovebees.com site, and find that all of the D.C. AXONs had not been activated. >.< (at the time I was not part of the forums, nor was I aware of the 6:06 PDT phone not working) Not willing to just sit there any longer, I lept into action (WIGU!), grabbing up the printouts from the night before, and grabbing my bike, and off I went. I left the house at 12:30ish, and I made my way down towards the 10:35 PST (1:35 PM EDT) call, but I didn't really know my way around town very well, so I changed my COA, and set out for the 11:20 PDT (2:20 PM EDT) location. When I got there, I wandered the street, and found a double payphone. Feeling hungry, I ran into a bakery on the corner, and got back in time to meet up with one guy who came for the phonecall. We started chatting, and I gave him the locations of the two calls I couldn't get to (but in retrospect, that was a bad idea, b/c he had bad coordinates on a number of calls... >.>) As the minutes ticked past, others arrived (Harsh amongst them), and we chatted as I ate a little. At first, we were worried b/c one guy was on one of the phones, but he got off, long before the phonecall arrived. Also I'm thankful that the folks who were there, were there, b/c seeing how I rushed off, I did not know about needing to say the nickname or the name or anything else, so if they hadn't informed me of that, I would probably have screwed it up... -_-;; At the appointed time, the phone rang and I answered it, and listened to the message. I listened to a femine voice talk to me, but at the same time it sounded like she was being attacked by bees. Eventually the voice asked for her nickname, to which I replied "The Operator". She then proceeded to say that she knew I passed, and then she played the .wav file (I haven't listened to it yet, so I'm unsure, but I believe it's the Nervous file). When it got to the end, it asked "Repeat or Continue" and I said repeat and passed it around, so almost everyone heard it (the last person only heard "I love bees" repeated, so I would guess he ran out of time). We chatted for a few minutes before we parted ways and I went onto my next location.

I rode south to the 12:11 location, where I met up with AlienDial and the girl metioned. We chatted a bit, and when it came time, since both AlienDial and I had already answered the phone, we let the girl pick it up. Big mistake. She had a brainfart or something, and when asked for the nickname, she said "Melissa". Obviously the phonecall ended. We split at that point, AlienDial planning to go to Arlington, and I was gonna go to nearby 12:56 PDT (3:56 PM EDT) phone.

When I found the phone, I went across the street and picked up a can of Mountain Dew to while away the time (when I arrived it was only about 3:20 PM EDT or so). As I waited, AlienDial showed up, saying that she wanted to be double-sure, since we both let the girl answer. We stood there chatting for a while until INCyr showed up. With two people on the scene, AlienDial figured it'd be okay, and said goodbye, and went off to Arlington. INCyr and I stuck together, with him answering phones for this one and the next two (13:11 PDT and 13:32 PDT) with no problems, activating all three AXONs.

After the 13:32, I had a hefty 2.7 mile ride to make it to the 13:53 call, so as soon as INCyr confirmed that the AI recognized him, I hopped on my bike and rode off. Unfortunately, I was not fast enough (the route on the online map was made for cars, which I was not in >.<), and in the end, I made it to the area just as the time for the call rolled around. Acknowledging my loss, I grabbed a bottle of water (much needed b/c of the long ride), and set out for the 14:38 phone (INCyr takes the credit for finding the 14:11 phone, and from what he said, it was a pain).

Arriving at the location for the 14:38 call, I met up with Harsh and AlienDial again, and as they said in their posts, the phone was A) inoperative and B) behind a fence. They tested calling the numbers listed (we could see every number but the last so they tried combos changing the last one) and then after failing, I reached around the fence (I'm one of those stupidly-flexible tall guys) and listening to the phone hear no dialtone. The phone was totally dead. After that we split up and I waited for INCyr (we said we'd meet up by the 14:38 phone) I had given my name to AlienDial and then to INCyr so we could continue to talk later.

I then rode over to the area for the 15:23 call, feeling quite fried already from having been riding my bike for most of the day, and sadly I did not find the phones (despite wandering for almost half an hour), but thankfully, chappy had it covered (you go!).

In the End:
Site location attempts: 8
Calls present for: 5
Axons gone hot present for: 4

Not to bad for someone who started at noon. Smile

With so many success stories I feel left out. I was waiting at the 7:19 Hey_Soldier phone, or at least I'm 99.9% sure that it was the correct phone, and it never rang. Any chance that it will ring tomorrow and today was a fluke, or is it just a dud and I'm out of luck?

I would've been at the St. Louis axons, but my car wouldn't start.

Sadness. :/

Ah, you guys/girls rock. I couldn't make it to either of my local points (GA, both being about 45 minutes away/work) but to read of it...amazing.

And I just wanted to say thanks to the mods for dealing with the onslaught of posts that came in today.

Location: Far Far Away. Nowhere Near You. Really.

All we know is a hint that Melissa will keep trying to activate her axons. We can hope that means she will keep calling. What that means for nonfunctional (as opposed to unwitnessed) locations, I dunno.

For nonfunctional locations, I would keep an eye on the coordinates list - see if they get "refined" to a better location, hopefully in the same general area.

For unwitnessed (any place where we are not 100% sure it wasn't directed at a broken phone), I would do the same - watch the coordinates, think about a second more relaxed visit to the location to see if you missed anything. If nobody went the first time, well then obviously someone must go.

For example, I hope to get to the Natural History Museum tomorrow. The reports sounded like they focussed on outside phones. At 9 AM EDT, that's probably reasonable - not sure the museum is open then. But for the second one very nearby later in the day, the phones could well have been inside somewhere. (It's a big museum and that could be difficult.) So that's still an open challenge. Plus I want to go back and get the other museum one that kaziel and I missed this afternoon.

32.785099 -117.129132 San Diego (IKEA)
32.736089 -117.14915 San Diego (Zoo)

The first San Diego coordinate appeared at the McDonalds in front of the IKEA. One of the Team Nuriko members (The Celestrian) took off work today to scout out the location and to secure the payphone. He drove up and down the streets (we-myself and Team member Illuminus-were in constant contact with him from our tech support job >_>) he eventually landed at the McDonalds and decided that was close enough to warrant a stakeout. celina63 showed up there as well, and that pretty much cemented it for me.

We (now Illuminus, Gary, and my boyfriend Allenseksi -the remainder of Team Nuriko) left work an hour early to head to the Zoo. However, we were close enough to the IKEA to stop there first and then move to the Zoo. At the same time, Illuminus' wife limsweet scoped out the Zoo location and ended up at the carousel by the kiddie train (she couldn't find any other pay phones).

We pull up at the McDonalds and celina63 was sitting there with her laptop ready to rock. So, i was feeling pretty confident. A few minutes later some more people landed at our location and the phone prompty rang. The Celestrian took the call and that axon went hot. Another man pulled up right after the conversation ended and seemed upset to miss the action. We cheered, and packed in our cars to haul it downtown.

Tons of traffic, I won't elaborate further.

We drive up to where limsweet is and the street name reads "Zoo Place" the GPS coordinates read "Zoo Drive". Crap. Allenseksi, Gary and I go towards the other road looking for payphones. Illuminus looks near the zoo. *Side Note* I used to hang out at the Veteran's Center down there a lot, and I remembered it being near the zoo, and I thought there was a pay phone in it, so I checked and there was (Verizon as well). We checked to see if it took incoming calls, and it did. Now we waited. Time came, nothing happened. The Celestrian calls us up (scaring the bejeezus out of me >_>) and confirms his phone didn't ring either. Illuminus eventually called us and said a phone at the Zoo entrance rang and someone said it went hot.

Guess what kiddies, it didn't. >_>

Apparently there were "at least 30" people gathering since noon at the location. We have no further information.

I really wanted to answer a phone too, it's my team! ._. Smile

Anyway, that's my story and I'm sticking to it. Apparently The Celestrian has already posted his news, and my other team mates will most likely continue to lurk. It was great to meet all of you. Keep up the good work!

Well, since no one's done this yet(at least not fully), I'll do it.

30.274933 -097.741183, 14:41 PDT
Austin, Texas

My friends and I went to the location, and arrived with about 10 minutes to spare. We looked around outside, but couldn't find anything. It was right near the Texas state capital, and there was a door nearby, so we went inside, whereupon we found 20 or so beekeepers already waiting. By the time the call came through, there were around 30 of us. Anyways, the phone rang, and we did everything right. They asked for the nickname, and our rep said Operator, and then we gave the passcode "Hey dad". When asked, our rep said to continue instead of repeat, so we didn't get a recording. But, we activated the axon. Go team Austin! He also didn't really remember well what was said, but we believe it was about a kid and his dad at the police station, I think. Austin guys, correct me if I'm wrong. It seems that we did, in fact, get the Hey Dad file, as we should have. Stupid guy not saying repeat... Rolling Eyes Wink

My friends and I hit FOUR spots throughout New York City today, and here's the lowdown.

The first spot, "dizzy", was inside the New York Times (newspaper) building. We had got up early and left early, and hadn't checked the website for updates. When we arrived, about ten kids were outside on the street waiting for something to happen. Someone mentioned phones, so we starting looking for them. The time came, and my friend John and I started running around looking for a phone. Once in the building, we saw two pay phones and a girl waiting there who was obviously waiting for the call. It rang as we walked in. She exclaims "I don't want to pick it up!" in a moment of shyness, my friend picks up the phone. Over her saying "say operater dizzy!" and me screaming on my cell phone, my friend couldn't hear what was going on and what he had to say. Basically, we messed up. Axon = not hot. Oh, and that girl looked extremely disappointed, sorry =(

After that we went to an Internet Cafe to confirm what the hell we were supposed to say on the phone.

Second spot, "nervous". We are convinced this phone was INSIDE Fordham University, which we COULD NOT GET INTO because we didn't have student passes. Anyway, we waited at the only other phones in the immediate area across the street with a few other people. Nothing happened. I still think that phone was in Fordham. I don't believe the axon went hot.

Third spot "walkaway_girl". Near another university, which name I don't know. Anyway, LOTS of phones scattered throughout the street, and quite possibly in the apartment buildings ALL OVER. Kids were waiting at every phone I saw outside. No action, axon never went hot.

Final spot, "stupid_cop". Inside New York Public Library (very ironic place for a loud phone call, by the way.) When we got there, kids were manned at all the phones on every floor. The phone on the second floor (were we decided to stay) rang. Kid picked up, said operator, said stupid cop, and got the I Love Bees ad nauseum message. He thought it didn't work and yelled at us for giving him the wrong password. WELL THE AXON WENT HOT, SO HAHA,ANGRY KID!

I took quite a lot of pictures, (40), most of phones and us walking around NY, feel free to look at them at my Livejournal here.

So two phones rang, one was inaccessible (we believe), and who knows what the heck was up with the walkaway girl one. Again, sorry for messing up dizzy.

My mom was just up their today, by the Ikea, but I didn't know that it was going to be so close. As for the other I couldn't make it of course, as like I said my car was broken.
