Writing a paper about ARGs.
What does the UF community have to say?

Hello members of the unfiction community.

As a first time poster I hope I'm not posting in the wrong area and I apologize if I am.

I'm in the process of writing a report on ARG's for a pop culture conference. Having spent some time sifting through everything I can get my hands on I've come to the conclusion that the best way to get a real inside view into these games is simply asking the veterans.

Having said all that my question is : What would you consider important/cool to know generally or specifically?

Anything from you guys would be helpful. Personal accounts of your favorite game or really anything you think I ought to know would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you in advance for your time and comments.

That's a pretty broad question. You mean knowledge before the game, during the game, or after the game? For example, I'd like to know it IS a game to disconnect some of my real life red flags and enjoy the experience.

So I think the question is rather broad. As far as stories, if you ever attend ARGFest you will leave with a lifetime of them! Wink

I agree with Nikko. I think most of us are more than willing to help people who want information about ARGs. More specific questions would help guide us as to what you want.

My one piece of advice for people who want to learn about ARGs is to play one. Experience is the best way to understand.

I actually am finishing a degree in cultural studies aka pop culture studies. I also minored in psych. So feel free to message me about it.

Feel free to directly quote me if you like.

To answer your question:

Generally to me ARGs are an escape from reality for me. They go beyond watching a movie, tv show or surfing the internet. You start to feel like you're Neo or Alice and travelled into a whole new world. It's very rare for a novel to immerse me this much although I read a lot (sometimes 5 books at a time).

Specifically I like the connections with the characters and this community. My favorite games involved characters that were very realistic and believable such as Eva and Erwin the cat in MeiGeist. I mean she was a university student like me, why wouldn't want to help her. It's an emotional and psychological connection and it really aids the game if it's there. I also think it's easier for girls to connect that way when they're baffled by some code. Most ARGs start with a cry for help or a mysterious email/message out of the blue.

I haven't been to any live events yet, but I plan to attend Summer O'Nine in Toronto this year.

I should also mention that I've been playing for a long time (7 years I think). It's fun being a girl and not being stared at by gawkers because I actually have a) an opinion and b) can find things no one noticed.
